I wish the games adopted Fun Christopher Lambert Raiden the same way they adopted Australian Kano.

This is one of my favorite movies and my favorite video game movie. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa was perfect as Shang Tsung and I'm so glad they brought him back for MK11.

The bad thing being that it doesn't feature the greatest Mortal Kombat character.

I wasn't allowed to see this movie in theatres as a kid, but my dad took my older cousin to it. He told me that the CGI Reptile impressed no one... but when he changed form and the voice clip played, apparently the theatre EXPLODED with cheers! Nice save for the film! Definitely one of my favorite video game movies, especially now that I can watch it whenever I want! X3

i agree this movie is hugely underrated

I looked it up, and apparently the whole Reptile statue human thing was a last minute addition, because someone working on the movie said they needed more fight scenes, so they needed to give Reptile a human form. It's also why they used MK2's "Reptile" soundclip (he's the only one gets one). So that makes more sense in regards to the movie makers' thought process, but just begs the question of why they didn't give Reptile his humanoid form right out the gate, seeing as to how that WAS his first appearance in the games.

I think the reason Shang Tsung ended the Liu Kang/Kitana fight was because she was the emperor's daughter. Imagine Shang Tsung returning to Outworld and explaining to Shao Kahn that he let his daughter get murdered. Imagine how that conversation would've gone.

Like Liu Kang goes to confront Shang Tsung, but instead he finds Raiden, Liu is confused, then bam! It's Shang Tsung! Punch! Maybe have Shang Tsung taunt Liu by gloating about how many Shaolin he's killed and he emphasizes by transforming into them.

The game just keeps making so many other great celebrity casting choices such as: Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa as Shang Tsung (complete with alternate movie skin) Keith David as Spawn Peter Weller as Robocop Sylvester Stallone as Rambo

It'd be Awesome if it was like Liu Kang had this feeling they were being watched throughout the movie until near the climax where his suspicions are confirmed and he battles Reptile. Since there is actually an in-universe explanation why he was in the bottom of the Pit, maybe have Liu Kang encounter him there.

I hope Phelan still gets to review Scorpion’s Review despite the world being infected with the C-Virus.

I'm glad Phelous agrees with me that this was, indeed, a good and fun film which sticks to the lore of the games quite close, and even keeps the visuals pretty spot on. There's one thing I'm disappointed never got discussed in this review: this movie needed to be rated more than just PG-13. An R rating would've helped this feel more like the games, seeing as how they were the most violent of their day. Still a good film, but would've been cool to get that Legacy style much earlier.

Yeah never cared for how this movie completely wastes the three ninja, who were interesting proper characters with backstories... here they are just mindless goons. And not a fan of Reptile's mouth-mask. I mean they did it so he can spit acid, sure, but in the game it was cool how he could pull off his mask and reveal his reptilian face when he does it.

I always wondered if it would’ve been better if Shang Tsung was aged to a really old guy or if just regular Tagawa is better. I think definitely instead of summoning warriors to fight Liu Kang he should’ve morphed into those guys while fighting him

The original screenplay for the film was more faithful to the game, in that it had graphic violence and strong language making it a R rated script. However, the deal that the producers had with New Line Cinema included that they deliver a PG-13 movie to keep the film accessible to the target audience (mostly teenagers). For this film, Linden Ashby trained in Karate and Tae Kwon Do. Ashby had practiced martial arts before he was cast in the role. Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa who's Japanese American played Shang Tsung who's Chinese. Jean-Claude Van Damme turned down the role of Johnny Cage to do Street Fighter (1994). The character in the games was allegedly originally based on him.

All the fighting in the movie was real. People actually broke bones during the production. The Reptile fight alone had some broken ribs.

Would love another good Mortal Kombat movie. Been 25 years now. Side note: now, movie Shang Tsung is MK11 Shang Tsung.

Arguably my favorite video game to movie adaptation with the first resident evil movie behind mortal kombat. Those are two movies that got it right and in some way the first tomb raider movie as well.

This movie is one of the best video game adaptations for good reasons. Cary tagawa as Shang tsung, the fights (for the time) are a spectacle, and do I have to even mention the theme song? However, there are a few nitpicks I have. Scorpions kunai being a cgi thing coming out of his hand is a little distracting, and they have the Highlander as raiden and he's casted as a mentor? Missed opportunity to see him kick some ass

Thanks to you Phelan, I mentioned this film to my husband Frank and it turns out that he was a fan of the games as a teen. I didn't have a clue! To sum it up - we now play the games and watch the movie together. My husband is Team Johnny Cage and Team SubZero and (although I admit Cage has some fantastic lines, even if he is a bit of cocky twerp) I'm more Team Raiden and Team Sonya. ^_^ Anyway, great review and great job on the stoner joke, too. Thank goodness Phelan quickly got the jab at Paul W.S. Andersen’s career got in early. This was back when we took this director seriously before a franchise called “Resident Evil” happened. I would love to see Phelan cover “Event Horizon” and what a mess that movie turned out to be; not a horrible movie but maybe the lost Director’s Cut was actually better

Take it in folks, this is the days of Paul w Anderson before he went full on WAIFU Wank mode. And he seemed more genuine about handling adaptations with this and I’d argue AvP. (Least he didn’t film the big crossover fight in murky dark vision or make it a typical teen slasher flick)

Well to Shang Tsung credit he could not kill kiitana because Shao Kahn would of killed him and since lui won he could not just simply kill him in fear of the elders gods seeing it and getting punished so it makes sense why he would stop the fight between the 2 of them.

turns 25 today! I still think this is a very fun video game movie. Most of it stays true to the source material. It was actually Paul W.S. Anderson's first film pre-Resident Evil. A popping electronic soundtrack, fun fight scenes, a well-diverse cast and it made $122 million worldwide staying #1 for 3 weeks. Anderson's films for the most part are critic-proof and international audiences enjoy them. He knows how to stage practical sets too. I only played the arcade game a few times at price chopper. The games violence actually gave birth to the rating system for others. The movie itself actually lead to new storylines for future titles. The reboot is set for next year and thankfully will be rated R to match the over the top bloody violence the series was known for.

the new MK movie is like the polar opposite of this one a super gory, thematically appropriate adaptation... that keeps none of the lore or characters except having the scorpion and sub-zero rivalry and fight while this one is PG and thematically not that MK-ish... but keeps very close to the lore and characters except for the scorpion sub-zero rivalry and fight ... I much prefer this one.

I always enjoy your opinion on Mortal Kombat, i wish i knew that much about it. And i remembered a detail about the movie. Kitana for sure was banking on the fact water would be there to help Liu Kang. But a little earlier Raiden is shown drinking from the bucket before the fight. Shang Tsung may break the rules, but i love how the good guys are also cheaters xD

If they ever did another live action mortal kombat, I think the miz would be a great Johnny Cage
