I went to this college and still live nearby Hackettstown. By the 90s it was co-ed. We all knew of Tillie. She would go about the older halls. Never harmed anyone. Many people had stories about her. Centenary had a little pub called Tillie's. We loved her. Really is a sad story.

I personally don't believe in spirits/souls (although I am happy that other people do and it gives them comfort), but it makes me glad to hear that she seems to have lived her life fully. She was learning and studying, but also courting men and sneaking out to have fun with her female friends. Sounds like she was adventurous and curious and fun-loving. Her life ended in violence, but she put the time she had before that to good use.

"The people of Hacket Town were very anxious that the perpetrator or perpetrators be brought to justice". One of the virtues of this channel is that it is, subtlely immersive. The narrator, by turn of phrase and tone of voice recreates an era as he dissects a crime. The account in this episode would have been understood and appreciated by 1886 New Jersyians. There is also a sprig of moralism now and then, not so much ironic as homage to time and place. Diligently researched, quirky, clever in conception and delivery, this is in my top 3 on KZfaq for true crime and it is a highly competitive field. Creative and distinctive.

There are times when I hear these stories and I’m thoroughly impressed by the investigative skills of the police/legal teams in those times (especially given their lack of resources). This was not one of those times. I mean, weren’t there supposed to be multiple attackers? RIP Tillie 😞 Wish we could know for certain who hurt and killed you. Excellent research and narration (as usual) BC. Thank you.

What a racket these cops and prosecutors run. No evidence but he's found guilty. He's sentenced to death but afterward he then "confesses" and his sentence is then commuted to life in prison. In this way, the prosecutors and the cops can say, "He confessed. We were right." Any sane person would confess to anything if offered a reprieve from a death sentence if they did so.

And the autopsy said it was at least 2 perpetrators and she fought valiantly and no pregnancy , the whole story he confessed with her being his mistress and pregnant doesn't have any reason I even wonder if he wasn't testify because he was guilty not for being the perpetrator but having an idea about who might have been the perpetrators and he was silenced with money and or threats.

I think this basic witness Pete of the procecution is very much a suspect himself , he knew she would arrive late cause Titus told him and he was without an allibi himself and as the attack had more than one person we are searching at least for two people so Titus alone is not enough it's a pity it was closed so fast this case.

Reminds me of the main witness against Leo Frank...Jim Conley. Sometimes the main "witness" has a very real interest in seeing someone convicted for the crime...anyone remotely possible will do. Frank was unlucky enough to be a Jew from the north, so Conley doubtless knew EXACTLY how that would go down. A black man's word wouldn't have convicted a white southerner...the terrible racism of the time led to savage injustices...but against a Jewish man...from the north...they would not only take Conley's unsupported word, they would ignore all the signs that pointed to Conley's guilt.

I absolutely think Pete Mead did it. I also question how forensics of the time determined there was more than one attacker, so I'm skeptical of how accurate that part is. If it was just that she had been carried and not dragged into the field, that's hardly confirmation; plenty of men are large/strong enough and women small/light enough to pull it off solo.

This was a very fascinating and yet "horrific"case about the murder of Tillie Smith. I can't see how James Titus could have committed this crime on such inadequate evidence. According, to the autopsy Tillie Smith was assaulted by two men and she was pregnant, of course if they had DNA back in those days, this case would have been somewhat easier to solve. May Tillie Smith's soul rest in eternal peace,🌹 it was a very nice memorial built for her gravesite. Great investigating, presentation and photos, too.

Cheers for this case! Fascinating case. I’m in my 50’s and from the time I began dating to the time I got married (25 yrs ago) I was always brought to my door by my date and he stayed until I was safely inside. Even my friends and I did this with one another. I would think that in Tillie’s time, the same held true. Why would Mr. Titus say ‘not without the Matron’s permission’ if they were indeed carrying on an affair? Seems rather messy detective work on this one.
@annagettings4675

That is such flimsy evidence it would never stand up today without forensic evidence to back it up. Pinkertons got paid per case. They were not renowned for thorough investigation. So a Pinkerton detectives determination is frankly worthless. But boy would it whip up a press frenzy. And let me get this straight. He dumped her in the middle of a field when he had solo access to a furnace? That makes no sense whatsoever. And this was a college full of male students, and no one thought to look more closely at that? Seriously sketchy investigative work, a press frenzy, which included a determination to paint Tillie as a poor little innocent who never fluttered an eyelash at a man (she might have been but there's nothing to prove it one way or another). Innocent or guilty the man never stood a chance. Brilliant work Brief Case!

Pinkerton was notorious for finding the wrong people who commit crimes. I don't believe he did it for a second. If she was with child then the autopsy would've shown that so I think he did confess (or interrogated to the point of a confession) to save himself from hanging.

Thank you Brief Case. I don't know whether James Titus was guilty or not, but I find it chilling that judge and jury gave him the death penalty with no real evidence.

@@bethawesome2900 I think the historical terminology adequately conveys the awfulness of the crime and it's meaning is well understood by an educated and mature viewer . Sadly no progress has been made in the way some men treat women . Society as a whole needs to lift it's game the world over .

Another intriguing case, thanks B💼 James Titus suffered great hostility from the press and was considered guilty without a shred of evidence! Given the choice of a confession or the gallows, it was clear he would choose to confess.. then it's congrats all round to the press, police and prosecutors for getting it so right! I think Peter Mead was a dodgy character.. there's more to this crime but I guess the truth may never come to light. Great job, BC 👍👏

would absolutely love if you were able to check into the extremely mysterious and very weird disappearance of Sandra Hughes . I won't go into all the things that make this disappearance even more mysterious than most disappearances, but it is definitely an odd one for sure. If you have any time could you please look into it and you'll see what I'm talking about. Thank you for your time.
