A couple lil things (from the book, at least) to fill in some gaps: It bugs me so much that they’ve marketed it as ‘based on a chapter’. The events of the voyage is only a third of a chapter. ‘Short but effective’ makes a spectacular four pages, but two hours of flim, maybe not so much. If I remember correctly, the other crates traveled with Dracula so he was harder to find. Really simply, the crate he hides in has the advantage of being indistinguishable from the other forty nine crates. The use of blood transfusions to ward off vampirism is… implied, but inconsistent in the book. It works for a while for one character, but isn’t even tried for another character. So if the transfusions help delay the onset of vampirism, the characters don’t seem aware of it. Plus, there are four dudes taking turns giving blood in the book, and they mention that they can’t maintain that, so one dude doing that is stupid lol. There are no survivors in the book. It’s one of the reasons the section is so scary- despite the reader being invested and fearful, the character’s terror and horrible deaths are ultimately inconsequential- they are simply meals, and DAMN its scary. And Dracula escapes the boat in the form of a dog, so he’s just as much of a threat at the end of the voyage as he was at the start. Having a survivor is so so SO lame. I hate to hear that :(

I’m actually looking forward to seeing this. I’m a huge horror fan. I love people trapped in a claustrophobic setting, with some kind of monster movie! If you read the book, or watched any of the many movies adaptations, you know the Demeter is doomed. So having it crash into the coast at the beginning, is a great way to start the movie. My question would be, why not scuttle the ship during the day time when the sun would stop him, if he tried to fly away? 😳

I'm taking a page out of Joseph's book and going one further...the better movies would have been a creature feature with this time/setting without it being Dracula or have Dracula somehow be a passenger on the ship to oversee the cargo so that you can have him in human form interacting with the crew...Toby could have even delivered a "he mostly comes at night...mostly" line.

I recently watched the 2020 Dracula series and found it quite interesting. The series did hit on the Demeter and what happened to the crew. Shortly after watching the series I saw the preview for this Demeter movie, I was excited because it meant higher production value. Then I thought, wait, I already know what happens, so this doesn't seem very interesting unless you have no idea what the Demeter is all about. I'll still watch this movie, hopefully it's enjoyable

It sounds like this movie has good potential and some interesting aspects to it, I think I will wait for streaming to watch it. I read Dracula last year for Halloween and one of my favourite parts of the book is the Demeter. What made it creepy was the sense of dread that I got reading the Demeter's log book and reading how the crew disappeared one by one. I don't think there were any survivors (I could be wrong) and the boat just showed up on the shore of Whitby. Maybe if they had a creative way to include that sense of dread in the story and have that feeling of foreboding build up over the course of the story (and maybe don't revel that the ship is the Demeter until a bit further in the story), then there is a strong crescendo as Clements and the rest of the crew finally figure out what happens, but its too late, so they decide to make a last stand and find away to warn people about Dracula. Maybe a last part of the story could have been Clement writing down what happened in the log, to warn Whitby and the police about this creature on board. They could also allude to Clement also being a meta physician and he is piecing together what is really going on. Then the last sense is Van Helsing reading the captains log, which confirms his suspicions about what's happening in Whitby and what is happening to Lucy. The actress that played Anna could then play Lucy instead.

Unlike the warp speed every morsel of 'news' is shared at present...Nick, saying how we get a blur(b) about how it's 1897, and...I mean after the fact, it's going to be too late to run for your lives - perhaps, following the narrative for the Titanic?😅

I think one of the problems with this movie is that you have to have read the novel to understand a lot of stuff. I was expecting the English-speaking Transylvanian girl to do some explaining about the nature of the vampire. Like he has to sleep on his native soil, for instance. or else he cannot rest. But the movie leaves the spectators who are not familiar with the novel quite at sea. Also, the cricifix is supposed to work, and Stoker's vampires don't burn in the sun.

I did enjoy this film a lot, and thought it was hilarious that the writers "borrowed" ideas from Titanic (our protagonist plays cards before getting on the ship, he draws his love interest on a sketch pad). However, I was REALLY shocked by the level of gore (I thought it easily leaned closer to NC-17 than R, just wow!) Loved this review guys!

The dr being the focal character throughout the entirety of the film, they made him very bland and one demensional. Complete missed opportunity to make him a former student of Van Helsin (like Seward). He should have been in Transylvania furthering his studies on obscure diseases. On a setting that needs to have building tensions, paranoia, fear, and dread: the poor writing for the drs character really takes you out of the moment. They also didn’t do much with the crew of the ship in terms of making them memorable or their actions meaningful. You’re really just spending your time waiting for them to get killed or wanting them to get killed because they’re so boring. The dr actually surviving the whole ordeal was a big eye roll 🙄 for me. It would have been better if after leaving the pub Dracula mauls him in an nearby alley.
