I was 7 years old when i watched the game with my family. When the goal was given, my father threw a beer bottle at the TV which caused the CRT to implode, then he got off his chair, ripped the TV off the power point and threw it through the window, shouting this was rigged, exactly like the battle of Britain!. I will never forget it, it was awesome!

You forgot to add that England didn't allow Argentina to warm up pre-match, for obscure reasons. Also, they changed the venue of the semifinal with Portugal the night before. Portugal was in Liverpool where the match was due to be played, they had to travel by train that night, disrupting their rest. It was obvious that the tournament was fixed! The famous expression from Maradona after his controversial goal in 1986, naming it the Hand of God, was a perfect fit as the world, not only Argentinians, saw that cheating moment as Karma, or divine intervention, against a country that had no respect towards anyone else. Fast tracking to modern football, looking at how football academies in European and South American powerhouses work, it is hard to imagine England winning ever again.

There are always commercial considerations in these tournaments. England played Portugal at Wembley to ensure the match sold out the biggest stadium, which Germany vs Soviet Union would not. Controversial decisions usually go in favour of the home side, and in favour of the bigger countries. In 1950 in Brazil, a Yugoslav player was injured while entering the field (from the away changing room at the uncompleted Maracana the players had to cross a building site), and not allowed to be treated while the national anthems were played, so he did not get on the field until after Brazil had scored. The bent Welsh referee writes in his book about "communist officials" arguing with him about this, yet four years later he is the linesman who disallows a last-minute equaliser for Puskas (captain of "communist" Hungary) so it is reasonable to suspect the official might be prejudiced. Would Bertie Vogts be allowed to mark Johann Cruyff as he did in 1974, had the match not been in Germany? Multiple cheating in 1978 in Argentina, and Korea in 2002, Garrincha sent off in the semi-final in 1962 yet allowed to play in the final against a small country (& "communist") Czechoslovakia, Mal Donnachie sent off in Spain in 1982, playing against Spain? It is a surprise if there is not cheating.

Their 3rd goal certainly never crossed the line. The footage was edited some years back to show that the ball did actually cross the line, so this is where a lot of confusion lies. Some then say that England would've won 3-2 anyway, since Hurst went on to score again, however anyone with a functioning brain would realise that had their 3rd goal not stood (meaning the score remained 2-2), they would've got a corner, and the game would've played out completely differently. When their 3rd goal was allowed, West Germany HAD to then go for it, which then left them exposed at the back, leading to the 4th goal.

They never call that in a Finals game. People being on the pitch is usually ignored bc every team does it basically. As much as it’s a rule, calling the goal back would be worse. Also would you really want to win on a technicality? Meaning winning the game bc the other team had players on the field. I would take it yea but I definitely wouldn’t argue about it trying to get a goal waved off. If the ref sees it then it’s different. If he doesn’t see it there takes a lack of pride to argue it.

The 1966 England versus Portugal semi-final was a magical moment in World Cup history that is often forgotten today. Sir Stanley Rouse, the then president of FIFA rejected Portuguese request for arbitration because he thought it would be “the greatest betrayal in sporting history” if football’s world governing body agreed with England and awarded them host nation duties over his home country. The match between England and Portugal was scoreless up until the 30th minute when Bobby Charlton scored his team’s first goal. Many of the early world cups were mostly in charge of the host nation since FIFA was not the huge corporation it is now. There were lots of dubious decisions. Argentina in 1978 was the only team in the whole cup that played its games after the other match of the same group had finished, while all the rest where played simultaneously. Italy 1938 was played during Mussolini's rule. Around the 1986 world cup thanks to more modern media and more overseeing of FIFA, these kinds of rigs weren't so easy to do anymore. The host elections are still most likely rigged and bribed, but it's not that easy anymore to favor a specific team with so much more cameras, slow motion, etc.
@scottw.3258

Mate. If was FIFA who rigged the 1978 World Cup, in order to quell an uprising. What changed things as far as on field rigging of games is concerned was the game in 82 between West Germany and Austria, otherwise known as 'The disgrace of Gijon', where Algeria had beaten Chile 3-2 in their final group match which had kicked off earlier than the West Germany v Austria match to finish on 4 points. As is well known, West Germany took the lead after only 10 minutes v Austria meaning as things were at that point, both West Germany and Austria would qualify at the expense of Algeria. Both teams then stopped playing and passed about, punting occasional long balls into the opposition half for the rest of the game. It was after that, FIFA declared that the final group games would kick off at the same time in order to avoid such an incident again. It was nothing to do with modern media or more overseeing of FIFA.

Do you think it was fixed? 🙅‍♂️
@Kafkaesque117
@Kafkaesque117 5 жыл бұрын
I Personally don't think that the world cup was fixed, was there some controversy and dodgy decisions in that world cup, but to say it was fixed I would say is false. England that world cup played there usually style, but there was some shred of tactical genius in play, a 4-1-3-2 (4-4-2), which was done to help negate the 4-2-4, there pragmatic style provided an antithesis to counties like Brazil and Germany, but we where at times blunt upfront. The refs for that world cup where poor, alot of dodgy calls where made and most of it was against south American nations. There was some controversy on England's end but it was so for other European countries. Other countries like France, Uruguay and Brazil just to name a few suffered from referee decisions. With the Argentina game there was alot of antics from the Argentina side, the English said after how despite them having a lower foul record, there where still the dirtier team as their antics like fouls when the ref isn't looking. When it was Milan vs Estudiantes de La Plata a couple of years later, the Italian got beaten up all over the field, the Italians said that "The English where right", so with that I feel there is some element of truth to what the english players where saying. Then the Rattin decision, I believe that the ref lost his cool after getting hounded by the south Americans all game and eventually just sent someone off. What Rattin did afterwards was not cool and not leaving the pitch, shows his childlike behaviour, he's still bitching on about it into his old age. The teams although afterwards respectfully swapped shirts, but Ramsey's interfereing with the shirt swap was not respectful at all. Ramsey's comments after got twisted, it was seen as racist in south America, this helped create an international fiasco and south America felt they had been wronged and cheated out. Despite that some south American players still show respect and love to England and the players say how England where good that world cup. The Portugal game in my opinion really sew the seeds of conspiracy. The venue change last minute caused the Portuguese team to arrive to the game not fully refreshed due to them having to travel more to reach the venue. FIFA actually changed the venue, not the organisers. I think thats why some say it was fixed. The final Vs Germany became one of the most controversial of finals, that ghost goal I feel dirtied their achievement, it was a bad call during a 50/50 decision, close but not enough. I'd have preferred it alot that they hadn't had won it that way, my dad said this "you don't win a world cup like that". But I do feel it gets overblown quite a bit though. Overall the tournament had a lasting effect on football: England became a world power for a while with the euro semi final and 1970 fantastic team. England Argentina game became a set of games always full of moments often controversial, the long ball style became England's go to🙁. Red and yellow cards became used to stop foul play after what happened to Brazil. Brazil regrouped and became more resilient to physical styles of play. England's use of pragmatic styles showed how it was still used throughout Europe, with Inter Milan notably using a pragmatic style around that time.

Much is made of that third goal but was that a foul by Jackie Charlton which led to the equaliser? And as the ball was bouncing around the six yard box, did the German number three control the ball with the back of his arm? That being the case the game shouldn't have gone into extra time. Having said that, Hurst's third goal definitely did NOT cross the line. Was it a scandal? So many tournaments have left a sour taste in my mouth. Argentina 1978, Italy 1990 and Korea 2002 has got to be the worst and most blatant. Then there was Lampard's goal that never was against Germany in South Africa. Anyway, I don't think winning a tournament on home soil is much to celebrate. you can only call a nation succesful if it's won away from home. Just my opinion.

I would suggest a multi billion dollar industry like international football is certainly something that won't be left to chance. As an England fan I can say that the 3rd 'goal' certainly never crossed the line so that's obviously a controversy. The days of goal line technology were a long way away so the officials have to be given the benefit of the doubt. Did they want England to win? I could accept that for lots of reasons. But that wasn't unique. Argentina were found to have bribed the ref in the Cuban game in '78 and put out arguably the best team Brazil on goal difference as a result. That they have never lost that WC title is testimony to the corruption at the highest levels of football. And Italians leading the complaints is very funny. There game is probably the most corrupt in Europe. Juventus are presently in trouble and not for the first time. Professional sport is a multi-billion dollar industry and with comes with the same problems found elsewhere in society.

At least, this was no goal, but under the circumstances of that time, not provable. But to get a star for that is ridiculous. During the 4th goal, there were people on the field, which caused irritation. So finally I must say, the englishmen seemed to be pretty unfair to win the title this way. But wtf, its history. When I was young, everybody in germany said, that was exxtrem unfair. But - the englishmen have to live with that dirty star on their shirts. And in fair conditions, they never won a second. And never will.

This is absolute rubbish. Even Beckenbauer openly stated that England were the best team and deserved to win. The goal line controversy is part of the folk lore of the game.... and was awarded by the linesman. That is not something that could have been planned. Far more obvious goal disallowance in another World Chip match against Germany where Frank Lampard's shot clearly crossed the line by about two feet and was not given!!

What a load of nonsense. You fail to say that England did not play in the first three world cups so to say they'd never won it without adding that is misleading. England were actually World champions 3 times by winning the Olympic football tournament, which before the world cup started was considered the world football championship. The Argentinians were the dirtiest team in the competition, even worse than Bulgaria, who kicked Pele to death. It has long been proven by modern technology that England's third goal in the final did cross the line but you also seem to forget that England scored a fourth goal so even if the third goal had not counted they still won the match. Watch the whole 120 minutes of the final and you will see England were the better team on the day so nothing lucky about that !!!

Fixed? What complete crap! England had the best team in 1966 and were a world class side with world class players. We have some real English haters here who try to belittle England's great achievement of winning the 1966 world cup. In the final, the German last second equaliser, which took the game into extra time, should have been disallowed anyway for handball. I'm sure had England won every game of that tournament 10 - 0, there would still be people trying to run England down. For goodness sake, England were the deserved 1966 world football champions. Deal with it, swallow it and move on.

England were not the best team and would not have won the World Cup had they not had home advantage. However they deserved to win the final on the day, the third goal was over the line (just) and any idea that the tournament was fixed in their favour is frankly ludicrous and doesn’t bear scrutiny.

"Some people are on the pitch," so under the rules of football, the referee should have stopped play. So the game finished 2-2. Then as it was in those times, it would have been a toss of the two-headed coin, which England, of course, would have won.

@freddysquirenaranjo4859 Misled? By the fact that there were two illegitimate goals in a 4-2 win would have meant that England wouldn't have won the World Cup. It's a self-evident, basic arithmetical fact. What would have emanated from tossing a coin, cutting a pack of cards, or a replay that would have transpired after the 2-2 that should have been the result are entirely open to conjecture. Nothing misleading there.
