I'm reminded of what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said about police in general when he helped Oscar Slater, a man convicted of murdering an elderly Glasgow woman back in 1908. Once the authorities think they've "got their man," they are reluctant to consider other suspects. That seems to be the case here. Investigators pretty much narrowed down the scene of the murder, then settled on a suspect who fit the bill, shall we say. As usual, your presentation of the case was great.
@lazyhomebody1356

Humans are like that. The victim's families are insane! If presented with absolute proof that the killer is NOT the person they originally thought it to be, 100% of the time they insist on punishing the original suspect, even at the obvious cost of letting the real killer go free. (source: every Dateline, 48 Hrs, and Crime show ever)

I agree, too. Cloaking policies in “tradition” makes them more fallible & potentially dangerous over long periods of time. Especially, when they are deemed widely to be “the best we’ve got,” without any regularly overseeing scrutiny nor review process by objective agents.

Sadly this isn't the first case i've heard of from the past that involved a young girl, who was poor, had to work to support her family and ended up being murdered and/or taken advantage of by an older man who was in a position of power. At worst the girls were murdered and at best survived but became social outcasts either because they became pregnant from their assault (back in the day especially for a woman having sex and having a child out of wedlock was a big no no even if it wasn't their fault and marked a woman as "ruined" stupidly) or because they victim shamed them making them out to be the bad one and the one who "tempted" the man... 🤦🏻‍♀️ But then again powerful people taking advantage of the less fortunate isn't unheard of in today's world either unfortunately.

I don't get how how they first could focus so much on Conte, who was talking to the director when Cécile disappeared, and then switch completely, and decide that Leotade, which only Conte could place at the scene, must be guilty. It makes no sense to me at all. And since poor Leotade got convicted, I would say he also became a victim of poor Cécile Combettes's murderer.

Ikr. No physical evidence, and very very weak circumstantial evidence. Only of the latter is that he was the last to see her alive. Though the innkeeper should've been looked into at that time, not almost two decades later, when he went on to kill his lady. I'm sure he was one woman (or perhaps man) away from being a serial killer. So at least he was caught. Even if not for the case we are on about, the fact that he beheaded Marie shows his lack of goodwill.

Thank you B.C. for another great case on a miserable rainy Monday morning. Cheers.

More importantly, violent killers and rapists are being allowed out of prison way to early and this isn't my opinion but based on stats. Look at California! So many recent violent crimes were committed by people that should have remained in jail. I used to be against the death penalty but after reading the actual details about many of the killings feel that in some cases, it's better. At the very least lets give the money it costs to house and feed these evil ones to the victims families. At 45 k a year or more, it would help alot i'm certain. Love thes e older cases. My mom used to say that people just didn't do horrible things years ago but i turned her on to these cases. True per capita crime especially violent crime is way up in many US cities. MT

If I were laying bets I'd put the shortest odds on the printer. He seems to have been the only person who saw the two Brothers - and he somehow remembered that, while forgetting about Cécile who was waiting for him. Poor Fr Leotade/Louis seems to have been set up. That said, the printer also appears to have had an alibi for most of the time, he was yabbering with the librarian, which tends to rule him out. There's no obvious motive - although the most likely is that someone wanted sex with Cécile and she said no. So we are left with an unsolved case. This is a very sad case, Cécile was so young and should have been able to live for many more years.

I'm often surprised by the forensic abilities of investigators for the time, but not in France. This isn't the first case I've heard of where the French authorities didn't care much to do their jobs back then. I wish I could remember the other two cases, but my brain is still in morning mode. Thank you Mr. Case. Always a great story.

I bet the souls of these long departed amd forgotten people are pleased you're telling their story. I love 18th and 19th century history and you always find interesting cases. So well presented as always, as sad as they are. Poor young girl; though it sounds like there were 2 innocents harmed in this case. Blessed be. Thanks agaon BC.

Fascinating how you gather cases from around the world, then give such concise narrations on them, covering all the salient points making them come alive as though recent events & not just a piece of period history in the annuls of crime, Really enjoy the content of you channel bravo BC
