Tragic story beautifully narrated as always

I love how you combine history with true crime.

A very sad case on all counts. The murder of a 14year old child and very probably, an innocent young man dying in an awful prison cell. I hope they both rest in peace.

I'm reminded of what Sir Arthur Conan Doyle said about police in general when he helped Oscar Slater, a man convicted of murdering an elderly Glasgow woman back in 1908. Once the authorities think they've "got their man," they are reluctant to consider other suspects. That seems to be the case here. Investigators pretty much narrowed down the scene of the murder, then settled on a suspect who fit the bill, shall we say. As usual, your presentation of the case was great.

It's interesting to see that with everything that has changed with the times, court procedures still seem pretty much the same as it used to be.

As the mother of a 13 yr old I am heartbroken by this crime. I just don’t understand why people do this stuff.💔 And then for an innocent man to take the fall..even worse.

Sadly this isn't the first case i've heard of from the past that involved a young girl, who was poor, had to work to support her family and ended up being murdered and/or taken advantage of by an older man who was in a position of power. At worst the girls were murdered and at best survived but became social outcasts either because they became pregnant from their assault (back in the day especially for a woman having sex and having a child out of wedlock was a big no no even if it wasn't their fault and marked a woman as "ruined" stupidly) or because they victim shamed them making them out to be the bad one and the one who "tempted" the man... 🤦🏻‍♀️ But then again powerful people taking advantage of the less fortunate isn't unheard of in today's world either unfortunately.

I don't get how how they first could focus so much on Conte, who was talking to the director when Cécile disappeared, and then switch completely, and decide that Leotade, which only Conte could place at the scene, must be guilty. It makes no sense to me at all. And since poor Leotade got convicted, I would say he also became a victim of poor Cécile Combettes's murderer.

Tragedy two innocent young people lost their lives. Makes you wonder how many miscarriages of justice have happened over years, even now days with all the modern technology. If she hadn't been left waiting so long then this probably wouldn't of happened to her. Thank you for these stories I really enjoy this channel 😊

This was a very horrific and yet puzzling story about the assault and murder of a young teenage girl. I don't think that justice was served in this case and I don't believe that the man that was accused of this crime committed it, period! Great investigating, presentation and historical information, too.

At an epoch when there was no DNA, no fingerprints, it was unfortunately easy to convict the wrong person. The truth will never be known, though I tend to think the man who confessed may have done it, really. Thanks for another great story, mixing true crime and history, I love it

It's interesting how much older crime has been recorded when some of the most recent crime has hardly any information on it.

Wow,. I didn't see that coming. So maybe an innocent man did die in prison. Very sad if in fact that is true. A century and a half later we still are convicting the wrong man on occasion, but I think that's slowly changing with the development of forensic science. That poor girl! And poor Louis! Every time I hear a story like this, my mind immediately thinks, 'what is wrong with some people?' Thank you for sharing this story with us. It's a reminder that things haven't changed that much through time, but perhaps we just haven't heard it all from the past...

Tragic. True to this day when the authorities want to solve a public murder case they will pick the easiest target, arrest and blame them, How many innocent people are sitting on death row? everyone at the facility should have been questioned. Plus, rooms and work areas searched. Poor Cecile and Brother Leotade

Thank you for the factual way you tell the facts of horrific crimes whilst remaining impartial but also relaying the horrors done to poor innocents.. This poor wee lass ..may her soul rest in peace.. May who ever is guilty feel torment for all eternity..evil.

Some pretty remarkable forensics for the time and careful deductions by the commissioner. The court messed up and as a result, another woman, and possibly more, died at the hand of the same murderer.

Such a tragic case, indeed. Thank you for covering this interesting time of French history and this most-disturbing case.

I do appreciate all the work you put into these, they make me sad about the cruel past and ruined lives so cheaply spent and worse that we are all being led by the dodge heads in authority and heading back down the same path we all came from

Amazing how you find such in-depth information on these very old cases. I appreciate your deep dives into these cases. Thank goodness

If I were laying bets I'd put the shortest odds on the printer. He seems to have been the only person who saw the two Brothers - and he somehow remembered that, while forgetting about Cécile who was waiting for him. Poor Fr Leotade/Louis seems to have been set up. That said, the printer also appears to have had an alibi for most of the time, he was yabbering with the librarian, which tends to rule him out. There's no obvious motive - although the most likely is that someone wanted sex with Cécile and she said no. So we are left with an unsolved case. This is a very sad case, Cécile was so young and should have been able to live for many more years.

I'm often surprised by the forensic abilities of investigators for the time, but not in France. This isn't the first case I've heard of where the French authorities didn't care much to do their jobs back then. I wish I could remember the other two cases, but my brain is still in morning mode.
