Real Families

6 жыл бұрын

It’s the second day of the week, and the Field family are presenting Dr Tanya with a dilemma - their son Ryan, who normally throws tantrums all the time, is behaving like an angel. Tanya suspects his behaviour is environment specific and he'll only behave badly at home. Darren Dixon gets emotional, Tanya teaches Sarah McMillan a new way to cope with and control daughter Kelsey’s tantrums and a new family arrive in the house. The Pitts are mum Alex, dad Toni and sons Tiimu and Tobi, and they are desperate for a full nights’ sleep.
Presenter Claudia Winkleman guides the audience through a week-long journey at TV’s first ever child and parent behaviour refuge.
During their stay at the House of Tiny Tearaways, three families live together, while child psychologist Dr Tanya Byron works with both parents and children to solve issues around fussy eating, sleeping habits, and public tantrums - and she'll challenge the parents to get to the root of the problems they're experiencing raising their children.
With Dr Tanya Byron's help and advice, the hope is that the families will learn useful pedagogy techniques and gain new insights, giving them long-lasting support though the parenting challenges they're facing.
Real Families brings you stories of modern day family life from around the world through the eyes of children, parents, and parenting experts.

GrandpaSuga I feel the opposite. I was just going to ask if it was normal in the UK for them to keep the background noise so loud while the narrator is speaking. Either way you cannot understand the speaker or what is being said by the families. It’s just annoying. I have never seen a program do that before - for good reason obviously!

I’m American and it doesn’t seem this way to me. The music could be quieter all around, but the narrator doesn’t bother me at all. The music does make me need to turn the volume up or down more often than most shows, but just one notch or two.

@pommiebears

Mar Z no...she thinks her son needs help, not her. She’s not actually taking any accountability for the role she’s playing in making her son miserable. To say such things about your own son, even ripping into his gender, is awful. If she can’t see how awful that is, she must be obtuse. I’ve seen lots of women who suffer PPD and it doesn’t take all reasonable thought and empathy away. She was happy to sit and relax while the son she “hates” was screaming his head off. She needs to take responsibility for her own mental health and start to realise that her behaviour has affected her son so detrimentally.

I just don’t understand what this “he just won’t settle” means. Put him in bed, lights out, close the door or leave it open a crack. If he cries himself to sleep, so be it. He will learn that crying doesn’t bring him attention. Crying never hurt any one. If he wakes up at night, same thing. They have to learn that nighttime is for sleep. Parents are in charge, not kids.
@marylyn66
@marylyn66 3 ай бұрын
That's how it's done. If parents don't bring children in their bed, there isn't that huge problem with getting them to sleep in their own bed. All my children started with a bassinet by the bed to a crib in their own room in a couple months. No problem.

@iamontda
@iamontda 5 жыл бұрын
No, the knocking essentially means that she's calmed down. Initially she would kick at the door, scream, and pull on the handle. Politely knocking means that she's calm enough to be in her right mind. She is then rewarded for being calm again by getting let out/ a hug.
@pommiebears

I agree with both of you. Yes, it does show she’s calming down and ready to respond positively, on the other hand she could easily manipulate the situation for attention. Depends on how the girl uses it I suppose lol!

I do too. And my son is on the time out chair at least 8 times a day. He is very badly behaved, but he doesn't get away with anything. I believe the Behavior has changed bc his dad has had an affair and left us to live with his girlfriend, and I left to pick up the pieces. But, these parents don't seem to know how to handle anything really. I don't want to be too critical, bc no one is perfect, and I certainly am not by any means. I applaud them though for seeking help.

I feel as though time out starts in the room technique when the child is no longer throwing things and tearing around. It is play or manipulation until that point. But then again you would have to let them know what you expect first otherwise they dont know they are in time out so dont know they should be not playing. Perhaps time out should be in a room other than their room with toys etc?

3 years ago I had three children dropped off with me for a weekend and the parent never came back so during that first year and a half out of these three children the younger boy 6 years old was out of this world with his behavior, in that year and a half his grades went up at school his acting out dropped by about 80% he stopped doing some of the horrible things that he was doing, some of them were downright disgusting, we did time out, we never yelled and we never spanked however I did raise my voice at times. And time out was a must. I personally was against one minute per year...still am. Nonetheless for him consistently along with time outs was the key for us. Like I mentioned his grades turned around, the torture of pain he unleashed on the other children and our little dog ceased again about 80% , time outs dropped then eventually to nearly none. He later was able to join mainstream schooling. He absolutely hated those time outs which eventually was his bad behaviors down fall. Example: He'd at first get six minutes, he'd be mad so he tried many things to upset me such as urinating on the wall. Didn't upset me, no because I made him help clean it up then start his time out over again. Every single day. After some time he was able to see the only person he was bothering was himself. And yes, his first week with no time outs we had a party to show him good things happen. Also throwing in this his behavior had always been a problem, he was in behavior school before he and his siblings were left with me. But no more.....

Light Bulb it was found out that harrison has autism, and a brain injury. "bad" kids don't behave well for anyone, if a teacher gets them to behave it means the teacher is doing something right and parents are not. my teacher in second grade sent a note home to my mom, to have me tested for add, though i was too well behaved as a child i was a bit slower in school. I was extremely self away and during my add testing i told my testers i'm slower in school and other kids pick on me for being slower. I'm smart, but took too long to do things.

Tobby doesn't need a boob everytime he wakes up, he's not even "eating" he's using it to pacify his self. If anything he needs a binky. Really i think when a kid can basically walk up and whip your boob out to feed his self or tell you to whip it out to feed him then he is far to old for it. That goes for a bottle as well, if he can walk up to you and clearly say give me/ i want a bottle then he's to old. He should have cup and a plate of food. All in my opinion!

When I stopped breastfeeding my children were between 1,5 and 3 yrs old. Of course a child of this age is normally eating normal food as the rest of the family does, so did mine. My children never had binkies or bottles. When I did not want nursing them any longer I stopped. You must be very clear and then the child will follow. To bottles and binkies: well, you train the children to get used to it, and of course you must get rid of them too one day.

Olivia: I feel with you and recognize what you say. i have been wondering at my huge need to be talked with intimately, and heard my sister tell that Mother never had conversations with us because she was so tired... I can't remember them ever playing with me, or any merry joy in our family, but shouting, hitting, calling derogatory names, criticism, complaining, cursing, tension, perfectioniosm, control. I now understand why her Dr. said she was not made to have children at all. No wonder I turned into a tense, nervous, fearful, over-sensitive, sleepless, analyzing, criticizing, unhappy, lonely adult. HAve worked for ages to change, but to little real avail, since am stuck in a physical, biochemical imbalance, probably Sympathetic Dominance since infancy (or even from mother's womb) and have yet to find a really competent therapist. HAve Asperger's and Anchylosing Spondylitis. Are you healthy yourself? Managing life well?

Why should they? Words are just bla-bla. If I have to start TELLING a little kid that I have affection for it WITH WORDS in order for it to get that message across, I have failed along the road big time.

DMP , these parents are there because they coddle their children too much! I am sure they tell their kids they love them. But that is not the reason why they are there. They are there because the have allowed the kids to take control and do what they want without teaching norms and bounderies...

people feel and give love in different ways. Some people respond well to physical affection, some respond better to words of love. My mom is a gift giver, she buys me gifts all the time and I would rather get a hug. Thankfully my husband gets it, he bought me flowers once, about 20 years ago, and never again.

petrairene its impotent to a child to know they are loved and wanted. if you don't tell your kids you love them, that is neglect. And hurts them mentally and emotionally. by your attitude you just fail at being a parent and just plain hate kids.

Lola Lopez showing affection is normal, and not showing affection can cause kids to act out. they feel that resentment, and act out to get ANY type of attention. a good parent teaches by example, sets rules they everyone follows and praises good behavior. setting up a routine and family activities also helps. as kids get bored easy and act out. filling their day will tire them out.

@@tinaandersen3270 But your lack of seeing children as people and empathizing with them is pretty worrying. A lot of people see children as if they are accessories to the parents and need to behave at all times to make the parents look good. Good behaviour isn;t about making parents look good it;s about teaching your child to become a well rounded, functional; person for their sake in their own well being and happiness, and of course for the wider community.

I what happened with the family that left early I don't remember them showing them but maybe twice. I agree with the vulgar language I don't understand why some parents are letting them do this and with fixing so many different meals you eat what fixed or you don't eat. We have some kids going hungry and more kids being so picky that they waste so much food that could feed a family.

I do wonder how any other generation has ever felt loved. I do not recall parents playing with us on the ground with toys all the time. I am nearly certain that mt parents did not get that sort of thing or their parents and so on. Why is it that children now need us to be their best friends and parents when generations of kids for so long as we have history did not have that happen? Is it that the poor kids can not go and play now or someone might nab them or the police will be called? Is it that we are having smaller families so less built in sibling play mates? I mean sure every now and again parents would play a board game or set up a set of legos or throw a ball etc but they did not spend any significant regular time playing make believe with their 5 year olds.

avaorchid parents always did activities with there children. most cases they live on farms so kids help out, they would go hunting together or help with chores. in the baby boomer days, there was always 5+ kids in the neighborhood so kids would play and explore together. now a days that is no longer the case. Also child psychology has gotten better in recent years and parents playing kids is seen as a bonding tool and help teach kids lessons. It shows kids love, which makes them feel safe and cared for.

Alex looks completely worn out. She says she enjoys breastfeeding on some level and is reluctant to stop. Its making her husband very unhappy and taking attention away from her older son too. Plus its gross hearing "boob boob" out of a 2 year old while he's pawing at her breasts constantly. Time for herto be a good mom and teach her child some boundaries and lifeskills all the other two year olds have.

I’m concerned because I’m not seeing common sense. Being consistent is extremely important so the child knows the boundaries. There will be no doubt in their minds and yes they will test those boundaries. Be consistent! Show lots of love, but don’t let your guard down because they will be testing from time to time. Good luck stay safe!😷

She wants help from her husband when the baby wakes and come in the bed but he’s coming for one thing only and that’s ti breastfeed he’s hungry. So when dad tries to deal with him yea he’s gonna get mad cuz dad can’t breastfeed him that’s a natural reaction. She has to stop the breastfeeding it causes all the sleeping problems from why he comes into the bed to why he cries amd screams til he gets the boob to shy your husband can’t really help you in those situations. The kid was screaming and crying and rolling over in their bed until the second he got her boob and he was calm and quite and ate then passed out.

I feel bad for temu dad because his young son seems to want nothing to do South him solely because he doesn’t have breast’s. The older son is a model citizen so they know how to raise a good child but like the mom was saying she’s just as attached if nit mire do the breastfeeding and that’s saying something b/c that’s all the kid seems to want most of the day, that and play or eat yogurt and the dad and him get along great during that time but when temu decides he wants “boob” it’s over die the dad he’ll cry and cry and cry til he gets his way b/c the mom always caves in and he knows if he keeps crying and acting up with his dad he’ll get 99.9 percent of the time. The dad could do anything and I mean anything but when he wants boob none of it matters. I mean the kids up til midnight throwing tantrums and it’s probably not smart to not have him in his bed when trying to get him to sleep but instead he’s out in the living room, but I think they know that if he’s in their bedroom area he’s going to be at the side of her bed or on their bed no ifs and me or buys he’s not calming down and trying to go to sleep til he breastfeeds
