Many believe that to pack on muscle, you need to bulk up, and to shed fat, you need to slim down. This idea stems from old-school bodybuilding, where massive calorie surpluses were seen as essential. But guess what? Recent science is turning this notion on its head.
A study conducted by Garthe and colleagues in 2013 shed light on the efficiency of overfeeding in muscle gain. It suggests that merely increasing calorie intake does not guarantee an increase in muscle mass; instead, it often results in more fat accumulation. This insight is significant as it questions the effectiveness of the bulking phase as traditionally practiced.
Furthermore, the study implies that the relationship between calorie surplus and muscle gain is not as straightforward as previously thought, and that there may be a point of diminishing returns where additional calories contribute more to fat than to muscle.
So, does this mean the end of bulking and cutting? Not quite, but it does open up a new possibility: building muscle and losing fat simultaneously.

I’m 64. I use only dumbbells. I do goblet squats, bench press, 30 deg incline bench press, Romanian deadlifts, skull crushers two or three times a week. Three sets to near failure. Takes 20 to 30 minutes. Also once a week, I do farmer walks. In addition, I throw in pushup’s and body weight squats once in a while. I also supplement with 5mg creatine daily. Diet is prioritized protein with carbs from vegetables and rice. Fruit on occasion. All this seems to be working for me. Check out the channel “Live Anabolic” good stuff there. Caveat: I am not a doctor or licensed professional fitness instructor. You might want to check with your own doctor before embarking on a fitness routine.

To build muscle, and add some weight? Or lose a little weight? Just a bit unsure about the question. I just turned 48, been really fit my life....and as I'm getting older, I'm losing weight, whether I want to or not...but I'm working on it.

Stronglifts 5x5 fir 12 weeks. Then move into a hypertrophy program.

Or just get some halotestin from hi tech pharmaceiticals and work ur ass off and get your calories under control. I lost 25 lbs n 8 weeks. I'm 193 now. Don't for forget the pct though.
