MCN's test of the new Triumph Tiger 800XC against BMW's established performer F800GS has shown the Hinckley factory has yet another hit motorcycle in its expanding range. Our road trip to South West Wales involved 450 road miles and a day off-road on the same terrain used by the World rally Championships -- an arduous test for any factory-sponsored rally car let alone mass-produced, road-biased motorcycles you or us can walk into a shop and buy.

I have an XC it fricking amazing everywhere. Blast along an open highway, drop into backlanes and gravel tracks then onto some forest tracks and once again blast it back to a ton all in the same day with a huge smile on my face.

I have the F650 GS which I use for touring and a bit of forest roads. It gets over 60 to the gallon and on a recent run in the scottish borders, taking my time and enjoying the scenary rather than seeing it flash by as a blur it got nigh on 70 mpg!

At first I thought there were two Beemers sitting next to each other, then I realised the red one was the Triumph. Maybe the designers meet up for drinks every so often.

crazy jump! and i think they are both great bikes! the triumph looks cooler, don't like the fact that the pilions footpegs are weld to the steel frame - if you drop the bike - what does that mean for the frame if it falls on the peg?

I personally test rode both bikes, they are both very exceptional bikes, it all comes down to personal preference, triumph for me was better on the road and feels planted to the road. where as BMW felt very light on the front wheel, probably due the the fuel tank not being all in the front of the bike but more under the seat for weight distribution, but on the other hand BMW off road almost makes you feel like you riding a MX bike XD, love that feeling. so yeah pro's and cons for each i guess.

This is typical of MCN reviews: a few blokes riding around on the bikes and negligible reviewing. I used to think the reviewers were lazy but it's probably more to do with their need to sell content in the MCN rag rather than give to much away for free on youtube. Result? they shoot themselves in the foot as it all comes across very poorly when compared to some of the American youtube reviews (e.g. MotoUSA - much more thorough and generally better)

João paulo Ribeiro If you plan to do a lot of serious off road riding then you have little choice. All of the serious "off road" adventure bikes are TALL. Such bikes need large diameter wheels and long-travel suspensions. The "road" versions of all these bikes, including the BMW GS and the Triumph Tiger XR and XRx, have smaller front wheels and lower suspensions. Much better suited for shorter riders. I am 6' 3" tall and I keep my Tiger XCx seat in the LOW position. It's a very tall bike. But the XRx is much shorter. The XR is entirely capable of light off-roading, on gravel fire roads and the like. If you do most of your riding on the pavement, and don't plan to tackle serious off road stuff, the Triumph Tiger XR or XRx would be a better choice. They offer an extra-low seat, too. You should have no problem with them at all. The XRx is as well-equipped as the XCx. It just has a slightly different mission.

With a title like "Triumph Tiger 800XC vs BMW F800GS ", I expected more of an in-depth comparison of these two motorcycles. While watching the video I was surprised when the elderly MCN reporter said "Well, to sum up ...". "Sum up!!!", where is the comparison but a few comments? Another very disappointing MCN video. However, I did like the image of the tiger jumping well above the head of the BMW rider as if to indicate the rise of a new breed of mid-size adventure motorcycles :)

I bought the new XCx. I can only compare against the BMW based on examining them in the showroom. The BMW has a separate bolt-on rear sub-frame, which they did solely to cut costs. I find that unacceptable, since they want top dollar for the machine. Everything about the Triumph seems higher quality. Not that the BMW is "junk". It just doesn't seem in any way special, and I don't understand how they justify the cost. The Triumph is better equipped, for about the same price. Obviously a better value. The Triumph comes with cruise control. Once you've ridden behind cruise control, on a bike, you won't accept anything less. It's an absolute revelation. The BMW used to have the edge in off road performance, according to what I read, with the Tiger considered the superior road bike. But the XCx has a high end WP suspension now. The same guys who make KTM so good off road. Advantage Triumph. Again, I can't speak to personally comparing them off road, and I'm a novice anyway so I would be of no use as a reviewer, but all I can say is the XCx works GREAT as far as I can tell. No complaints. It's also slightly lighter than the BMW. I DO have 6000 miles worth of experience with the same engine and gearbox that the BMW GS has. I came from an F800 GT sport-tourer. I can say from personal experience that there is simply no comparison between the BMW and the Triumph motors. The Triumph Triple is in a whole other class entirely. Nobody talks about the F-bike's motor. It does the job. That's the most you can say for it. It doesn't sound great. It vibrates. Not a bad motor at all, but nothing you'd ever brag about. "Like a loyal but slightly dopey dog", said one reviewer. The Hinkley Triple, on the other hand, is BRILLIANT. Worth the price of admission all by itself. I can't rave about it enough. The sound, the feel, the power deliver.....everything. Wonderful! As others have pointed out, the Triumph's electronics are a bit odd to figure out, and it's annoying that it automatically reverts to to "road" mode every time you re-start the motor. But once you get the modes set up the way you like you're never going to mess with them again, aside from pushing a single selector button, so I'd say the complaints are really unfounded. I'll leave it to others to debate the finer details of off road performance. From what I've read the XCx is VERY capable. BMW should be afraid. Very afraid. It's certainly more capable than I'll ever need. All in all, a lovely bike. Highly recommended. Even the FUEL ECONOMY is great! Amazingly so.

Mickey Bitsko One big surprise on the XCx: Airflow at speed is surprisingly well controlled. I assumed that I'd be calling Madstad for a solution, but now I'm not so sure. That stock windscreen, which appears to be a tacked-on afterthought, provides a very smooth, laminar airflow. I'm 6' 3" tall and it hits me about chin height, and is nice and smooth. MUCH quieter than the stock screen on my F800 GT, and much smoother as well. I may not even bother with an aftermarket screen, and that's saying a lot. I'm very picky about that. The seat is comfortable out of the box, as far as stock seats go. I'll be having Kontour work on mine, as I did with my F800 GT, but in stock form the seat is one of the better ones I've experienced. The feel of the shifter is MUCH better than the BMW. It feels more substantial and positive. Gearing is odd, with very closely spaced ratios, but that's a function of the off road spec. The XR models have wider gear ratios, as I understand it, and you could easily duplicate that on the XC models with different sprockets. I bang through the gears as quickly as I can move my foot. And while I'm sure you can go ton up on an XCx I don't think you'd want to listen to the motor howling like that for very long. 80 mph is no problem, but this bike is not geared for high speed travel. But 80 is fast enough. Set the cruise, and just relax. That puts the motor in a sweet spot, it sounds great, fuel economy is excellent, and everything just hums along. However, a major upside of the gearing of the XCx is that you can be in 6th gear at any speed above about 35 mph and the motor will still pull willingly, and never feels "bogged down." It's amazingly flexible. In traffic it's almost like having an automatic transmission. Unless you require rapid acceleration you simply never have to shift. That makes riding a lot easier than the BMW's setup, as the F-bike's motor is considerably more "peaky", and doesn't like low rpms at all. It makes horrid knocking noises if you bog it down. The Triumph will IDLE in 4th gear on level ground and seems to be happy to do so. Crazy.

Mickey Bitsko The main reason why I pulled the trigger on this trade was that my F800 GT gave me a first degree burn on the inside of my left thigh the first time I rode it on a seriously hot day, with no jeans under my riding pants. No motorcycle should give you a medically significant BURN just rolling down the interstate. Those who are concerned with heat, take note: The Tiger rejects heat through large vents, and does so equally on both sides. Any bike will produce heat in proportion to the work the motor is doing, so the only difference is how well they distribute that heat. The Tiger does a good job. So if you're wondering, there's the answer. No issues with heat. It's warm, like all motorcycles, but better than a lot of them. Especially fully-faired bikes, which tend to squeeze the hot air out of relatively small vents, and often right where it shouldn't be.
