In this segment I begin the restoration, repair, and testing of my Rotel RX-1203 stereo receiver. This receiver was produced in 1977 during the time that many consider the golden age for 2 channel audio equipment. Maybe one of the most beautiful silver faced receivers ever made. This vintage audio receiver produces 120 watts per channel into 8 ohms which is more then enough power for most ears and speakers. I talk about the Rotel SX-1203 solid state receiver, it's specifications and begin the restoration.

What a great demonstration of the usage of De-Oxit. Both the explanation and the video angle showed the way to do it. And as a bonus, I could actually hear when it went from a muffled almost blunt noise to a clear click as you turned the knob. Great job.

I have two Rotel units, a RX-503 that I "stole" from my dad, and an RA-1412. The amp is a tank and I'd love fully restore it, though it works fine and sounds amazing already, but would like to maximize it's potential some day, but don't have the skills to get into something like that. I think I'd fully restore and recap the RX-503 first and see how that goes before getting into something that'd be over my head. Thank you so much for posting videos like this cause I've learned a lot from watching, and this particular Rotel restoration will help me tremendously in the future when I get around to restoring my own. I can't wait for part two!!

Your very welcome. My hope is that folks like you can keep their equipment operating for years to come. Yes, that's a great plan to take on the RX-503 first. Your doing it the right way. Your RA-1412 is a wonderful integrated amp. I'd love to find one some day. I think experience is the key to working on vintage audio equipment or most anything else for that matter. Get your feet wet with the 503 and then take on the 1412. Just take it slow and remember it's not trauma surgery. You have all the time in the world. I'm sure your projects will go well for you. Just as important as the sound quality is getting those old electrolytic capacitors out of your Rotel's to make them reliable for decades to come. Good Luck!

When I was 18 or 19, living in a dumpy little town in North-Western New Jersey, I went exploring with a friend and his mother. We came upon this truck stop in the middle of nowhere near the Pocono Mountains in Pennsylvania that sold stereo equipment. They had the full line of Rotel receivers, and I was blown away! I had never heard of them before, and they boasted specs that were right in line with the latest Pioneer receivers!!! I could never afford one, but lusted after them for years! What a beautiful one you have! Let's never let Rotel vanish into obscurity!

@@vintageaudioaddict If they had smart phones back in (about)1978, I would have taken pictures of the place. The stereo section looked just like any other stereo store, but other sections included a restaurant, a pinball machine, and pool table. It was on Route 209 between Stroudsburg and Bushkill. What an amazing place! I'm sure it's long gone now.

A few brands from the 1970's were so overlooked. A pity Technics and Rotel receivers don't seem so popular. This is one sweet beast. I remember Tech Hifi selling the RX-102 THRUSTING 5.5wpc. A quality component none the less. This whole line from Rotel were good value back in the day. Would like to "play" with this receiver and check it out. Nice video.

They were here in Calif. and I remember that exact receiver. Nice to see Chris is a Cat person. From your screened enclosure, Florida makes sense, lots of flying insects. Have been wanting to mention that I watch many people like you on You Tube, but, like your style the best not too long. Am now living 1 of my dreams and buying equipment built from 1976-1980 (Pioneer my favorite) have had more trouble with those tiny alan screws (knobs) after sitting for 40 yrs and breaking loose, learned how to use multi-meter and read schematics, always been good with solder.

I’ve only done a few amps but the struggle is the main filter caps. They tend to have structural mounts. The new caps are different in physical size. A very large difference so it’s hard to make the mounts work correctly.

Thank you so much! I don't have any experience with the 7060 but with all older pieces of electronics the electrolytic capacitors are the main concern. The only place I remember seeing those is in stereo magazines. They used to have this fancy fold out head that was like a poster. And that is my only recollection of this receiver. In fact I think this receiver was on one of those posters

I'm glad I'm not the only one. As I said in the video, I just don't remember seeing Rotel audio products back in the day. With this RX-1203 retailing at $860 in 1977 I wouldn't have able to afford it anyways.

What does it normally indicate when you have a device with unlabled boards? Im fixing an altec active speaker from 1989 that also has completely BLANK circuit boards, are they home made or not made by machines?
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 3 жыл бұрын
It's hard to say in your case but probably just like this RX-1203 they just didn't silk screen the board. Functionally it makes no difference but as I said in the video it complicates the repair some.

@@vintageaudioaddict You couldnt be more right about that sir! I get the feeling in my case the board was populated during construction, not pre-made and simply installed. Its killing me as for each amp section on the board (3 per speaker) there is a surface mount POT on the board and then 3 more outboard on their own PCB mounted to the heatsink through the hole on their transistor/Voltage regulator. No idea of what their function is and im sure they are important!

Great video, but I'm wondering where do you order your parts, transistors, etc from? I live in Southern California and I am leary of ordering transistors online, hearing that a lot of the components are counterfeit, thanks 😊

@@vintageaudioaddict No problem! Thank you for the tips regarding the retaining screws. I collect and restore old Marantz gear and just got my first unit that has this style retainer it's the 3250B pre. Ill be sure to use that tip to avoid damage, I don't think I would have thought of that myself. The 3250B has a pretty funky layout inside compared to the other dozen or so Marantz units I've worked on. Should be interesting!

First of all thanks for watching. I think I got this Rotel when I traded some other equipment for her. Vintage audio is just a hobby for me so the value of my equipment is secondary. I just enjoy owning the equipment. Of coarse someday I'll have to be a seller. At that point I'll be very old and won't care what it's worth.

Why do you replace the tantalum capacitors? They do not age. Heck, ceramics age and you don't change them
@vintageaudioaddict
@vintageaudioaddict 3 жыл бұрын
Tantalum capacitors have a potentially dangerous failure mode. In case of voltage spikes, the tantalum anode may come in contact with the manganese dioxide cathode, and if the energy of the spike is sufficient it may start a chemical reaction. This chemical reaction produces heat and is self-sustaining and may produce smoke and flame.
