The Retro VGS morphed into the Coleco Chameleon. But is that the worst thing it could have done?

To me, making a modern "retro gaming console" is something you'd build on your own as a hobby, for the challenge and for fun, and to infuse some fresh life back into your dusty old "AtarColecIntelSegTendo" and its cartridges, probably by following a Ben Heck tutorial and making it into an attention-grabbing portable. It definitely doesn't follow as a mass-market item that people plunk down hard cash for, especially of they've ever heard of emulation.

+Sean Wilkinson I think what you wrote echos what a lot of people think. I also believe Mike thinks everyone (even the critics) can be turned into supporters of his console if he just does or says the right thing. The problem is that some people are just opposed to it and find the notion ridiculous from the outset.

+John Anderson (Photardshop) Mike only learns the lessons he wants to learn when he wants to learn them. Whenever he didn't learn his lesson and it bites him in the ass, it's suddenly someone else's fault. Expect to see more of the same in the next campaign!

In my opinion, the mistakes of this console were made at project startup, and no branding could save it. First off, recycling the Atari Jaguar console and cartridge molds, though done to cut costs, gives the unintentional collateral impression of the console being just another bootleg (albeit circuitously). Second, its main selling point is that its core logic is field-programmable and so it has no unique identity. Finally, the only retro thing about it is that its CPU is 32-bit. P. S. the potential Ashens episode for this is already writing itself.

+Joseph Ruhf That could be true. I see the problems more in a business sense, there's no doubt it's a get rich quick scheme and they're trying to mask it any way they can. The reason they fail is that most people aren't that dumb, but let's see if it works next time!

+StopDrop&Retro Portraying your own business venture as a mere shameless cash-in, as the campaign for this has already done twice, if it were were intended purely as a troll, is a textbook case of how to troll correctly. The problem here is that Mike Kennedy intends this as live business, which has soured much of the potential market for whatever ultimately materializes from the start. Therefore, my opinion is that the team should just cancel everything and return to the drawing board. If they do, maybe they can come out with something commercially supportable.
@StopDropRetro
@StopDropRetro 8 жыл бұрын
+Joseph Ruhf haha, for a while, back when it was still the RVGS, I was wondering if this whole thing was an elaborate trolling campaign. Nah, he's too serious. However, it crosses a good idea I've had. Mike has always wanted this campaign to "go viral" but it's only going viral for the wrong reasons. The problem is that his project is completely humorless. If he would completely own the sheer absurdity of a modern retro console, it would stave off the criticism and attract people who like to collect curios. He should make a pitch video that looks like it's played off a VHS tape and release the console in neon colors that were popular back then instead of transparents or gold. But that's just my thought, I'm sure Mike knows better.
@alsatusmd1A13
@alsatusmd1A13 8 жыл бұрын
+StopDrop&Retro The problem is that he's trying too hard to be so serious. Now that he has it all but released, there could be no better time for him to own the sheer hilarity of ripping off a failed console and then using core hardware that is adaptable to be compatible with games natively for the same failed console, he could save face and attract people who have a sense of humor about the odder and obscurer parts of the past. He should make a.pitch video which parodies commercials for post-Amiga 8-bit computers, the originals of these inadvertently appearing on VHS at least once, and release colored skins as console accessories as a parody of the failed CD and 32X add-ons for the Genesis. If he knows better what he's doing, he must not be showing it. P. S. In the OP of this conversation, I meant to say GPU; the only entirely retro bit depths for CPUs are less than 8.

+David Lee Thank you, I've got more coming soon! If I ever did a video about the GCW Zero it probably wouldn't be on this channel. I like to keep the Zero away from this channel because I wanted this channel's success to be my own. I'm not against talking about it, but it's a whole separate topic and I doubt most of the subs know enough about it to care. A lot of them don't even know about my previous channel, which I think is great because again- I wanted this channel to stand out on its own without the Zero.

Mike Kennedy is an ambitious man. He didn't have to partner with Coleco...he could have gone with Atari, give it another cat name, such the Atari Lion, and have a bigger hilarious fail....or lawsuit...or something. It would be funny either way.

7 years and a few classic retro old named branded scam consoles later. Yeah turns out it's a dumb idea. Even the only "successful"(in that it actually came out) the Atari VCS turned out to be a flop. Just shows that banking on nostalgia with a classic brand name slapped on to a new platform isn't a good idea.

Brand recognition is HUGE in marketing. Also most people associate coleco with BEING the underdog as it was never able to overthrow Atari in its only major console release. Its not as if it became the Microsoft retro VGS. I think this is a great move. as it appeals to Joe Everygamer who plays COD and FIFA every year. Now he will read about this on IGN or facebook and say "Oh Shit its a New coleco vision I remember that! I want to back this."
@StopDropRetro
@StopDropRetro 8 жыл бұрын
+David Garcia I don't think "Joe Everygamer who plays COD and FIFA every year" knows anything about a console maker that's been dead for 30+ years. That brand recognition doesn't take you anywhere but back to the gutter. Bringing back the Coleco name is like trying to bring back the AMC car brand. They've been out of our minds for decades and no one ever asked for them to come back.
@arcadeperfectreviews2653
@arcadeperfectreviews2653 8 жыл бұрын
+StopDrop&Retro the you're underestimating how stupid Joe every gamer is. I've seen people who truly believe sega is releasing a new console this year based on some stupid petition. I've seen people buy "16 bit console"s because they thought that they are real SNESs and then ask for madden and COD on them. A word can trigger a memory and a memory can trigger stupidity. However I doubt that ANYONE (but you) would associate coleco with a massive videogame corporation. I guess what I'm trying to say here is I don't think this hurts them at all. Any brand recognition is always good. It's marketing 101, it's sleazy and a cheep way to grasp attention, but it's good marketing (and all good marketing is ask any movie star or pop singer agent) Do I think this will change everything? Hell no, this system will still be a flop until they start bringing in things that we can't get anywhere else. Like arcade exclusives and extremely pricy retro games. I'm just saying.

+StopDrop&Retro sorry, but I own and run a business. A very successful business in NYC. I went to school for business. I make good money in business. I know that brand recognition is key in advertisement. Read any book or paper on selling a product and they'll all tell you the same thing. While the "underdog effect" is indeed a real thing, in this case they haven't lost it. It's not as if they've partnered with a company that is huge and revered like Ea, or Konami. I know what I'm talking about here, and while you may be the expert on cheap knock off systems, I am on business. Hell you said so yourself in the comment section of your last "Retro VGS" video.

At the moment, alcohol addles my memory, but I believe there is another retro console on kickstarter that promises to play ROMs and CDs. I mean, if you want a retro console, just go with Ouya or use your PC. There is no need to purchase an overpriced kickstarter project. As of late, all retro-style games worth their salt get a major console release, so we still get our new nostalgia fix. And if one has the ROMs, then just hook your PC to your TV and get a good Logitech controller.
@StopDropRetro
@StopDropRetro 8 жыл бұрын
+senatortombstone True. And yeah, the console you're thinking of is the IndieGo. It's not a bad idea, I'd like to be able to play original CDs, I'm just weird like that. But overall, I agree with your advice, just like in the first Retro VGS video I made "if you own a cheap laptop and an Xbox 360 controller, then you already own the best retro gaming console ever made"
@senatortombstone
@senatortombstone 8 жыл бұрын
I know that the Retro VGS was (still is?) intended to be a platform for retro-style games, but as others have pointed out, who would waste their time developing for a console with such a small user base, especially when people make unlicensed games for all manner of dead consoles. However, I have not seen any Playstation homebrews, which I think would be a perfect system to make homebrew games. The PS1 is probably the cheapest retro console out there. The only thing holding them back is probably the threat of Sony lawsuits.
@user-xn3kt6bn5r
@user-xn3kt6bn5r 3 жыл бұрын
@@senatortombstone I think a problem with ps1 homebrew is that it's difficult to run unlicensed discs in physical consoles without having a modchip installed. There's always the Net Yaroze consoles designed for homebrew, but games developed on those systems are only playable on other Net Yaroze PlayStations. Dreamcast, though, is a system that doesn't have that problem, due to it being able to run games from burned cds on the majority of consoles. That's why you see more homebrew on Dreamcast than alot of other systems. It also helps that an ODE has been more available for the Dreamcast than the PlayStation until recently.
