I'm a full-time professional Webtoon and Comic creator and I'll be reviewing viewer submitted comics and Webtoon Canvas. I will look at art, storytelling, lettering, etc. This is to try to help you learn how to get better at comics by giving an honest critique.

This video critique was requested by the creator. I don't offer unsolicited advice because I don't believe it is appropriate to force your opinions on someone you don't know, even if you have good intentions. Imagine walking up to a stranger on the street and saying "yellow's not your color."
I'm not going to focus much on anatomy and other aspects of drawing that simply require practice and time to learn. Saying "Draw better biceps" isn't super helpful. All artists are always and forever trying to draw better biceps.

The art in The Eighth is really beautiful! These critique videos are always super helpful, so thanks for taking the time to make them so thorough! I recently published a WEBTOON called Rocked and noticed that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of info available to creators on which chapters the views correspond to or who is reading. Anyone have any tips on how to get more stats/navigate the creator page?

I really liked into how much detail you went with the gutter space. It's something that gave me a lot of headache lately, so it really helped me. :) i was thinking that it might be interesting to give each critique a focus, so you can go into as much detail on other topics?

Very good idea. I like to do full reviews for my Patreons, but I am finding better ways to keep things unique to each webtoon. I do some short critiques where I review more than 1 comic at a time and only do one subject per comic. But I haven't had time to do those recently.

I really like this webtoon and the art and hope the creator will be able to update it soon. I love the art and I read it twice but what bothers me most is the story. At first I thought the villains like K and the demon of he motorcycle had evil secret plans that would be revealed after, but in some episodes it's shown that they don't really have a plan or intend to kill or harm the main protagonist. The motorcycle demon was just trying to have fun and accidentally burned something that is important to the story, he also stole I'd axe and I don't know why actually? The whole scene of the whole motorcycle and stealing axe was very confusing in general. I didn't understand the relation between the "villains" and heroes before I read the questions and answers. Wich also bothers me, like I like questions and answers but usually creator answers things that aren't related to the plot, it's like a bonus content. Like isayama from Shingeki no kyojin , he may answers of readers like "What's Levi's favorite juice?" But not "What is the origin of the titans?" IThe world is a bit confusing to me as well. Does people know angels and the forbidden fruit exists? Why does Evelyn went to leave with guys she didn't even met before? How long have they been searching for the fruit and Eve herself? Where is the fruit ? Is it in a secret place? Is there someone protecting or hidding it? So many questions 😔 Also the last actual chapter ( spoilers ) : there's a scene where the main character is kidnapped by a hat character Wich i don't remember the name. The scene is very good and I felt anxious and caring for Evelyn. When the other character was going to kill her I was so desesperate lmao 😂 Before she manages to kill the mc, Dereen appears and kills the killer, there's a panel with a bit of graphic violence and I was very shocked at the time. Blood spills all over Evelyn's face as she stares in shock. I thought she would freak out ( If I were in her situation I would ) , but then there's a panel of Darren smiling heroically with angels wings behind him. This may be a nitpick but I didn't understand this sequence at all. He says Evelyn is safe now, but is she...? That gal/boy he killed was once living in his house , I didn't think his act of killing them was heroic. And after the end of the episode there's a chibi versions of the two, Wich is funny, but I think it could be been in the next chapter. Because putting the chibis there kinda cut off the dramatic tone of the episode.

i always find it hard to organically introduce the names of my characters in my comic. does anyone have tips?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
It's a little weird, cause I don't think we say names in real life as much as we should in comics, at least at the start. Instead of saying "he told me." say "joe told me" . Otherwise just jam the names in there when it's not too weird. "joe, no." " let's go shopping, joe."

i'm no expert, but i just have the conversation go on as it'd go normally and they eventually mention the character's name
@emmypax5084

I think one thing that helps is not introducing too many characters all at once. I know in ensemble stories it can be tempting to show off the full group immediately to the reader, but my eyes glaze over pretty quick when it's just a whole lot of names/character descriptions coming at the reader at once. In a lot of ways, I think the real challenge isn't so much stating the names as getting the reader to remember the names and who they attach to, and why the reader should care about that person. You're not just trying to get names into people's heads, but establish characters. To me, that's why you want to keep your cast numbers down when you first intro characters, because while you can rattle the names off, it doesn't count for much if your reader doesn't have a reason to invest in the characters. As for cheap tricks that help organically introduce names and sound natural - we tend to say people's names more when we are yelling at them. Whether that's calling them over, or telling them off, nothing brings out names like trying to get someone's full attention.

I agree with the other statements, add their name whenever possible! I had an issue with my OC not having anyone around so I literally made her talk to herself internally or out loud. like prep talk sort of thing. “Delilah, today is not for crying! Understood!” “Smooth Delilah, I swear I have the brain cells equivalent to that a goldfish.” Hope this helps! Lol

@@Jackce so..... I just binge read your series and...... I f*cking love it 😆 it’s chaotic and fun and I adore the characters. I’ll give my thoughts only bc you ask but I did have trouble figuring out everyone names at first. Have you thought about doing character bios? Urban Animal does some really good ones since they also have a larger cast, idk if that could be something you could integrate as an extra episode, (just an idea) I always love learning more about the OC’s anyways ☺️ The spacing issue was there but I was still able to read it and enjoy it. With the spacing, you could put the speech bubbles in the gutter and have an easier read, help us slow down a little. But with everything said above. I full heartily thought it was an awesome read and I look forward to more! You just got yourself another fan!

This vid had alot of panel help ♡, and id like to ask a question if youre able to give your opinion. When i make my webtoon, i try to keep either 1 or 2 panels to fit onto a phone screen at a time. I like to be able to see both panels at once if they go together instead of putting more spacing but the second panel gets cut in half. But sometimes, if both panels are a bit chunky, but not enough to keep the screen for itself, the two panels will a bit close together. Do you think its better to have them a bit closer? Or do you think it makes better sense to put better spacing???
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
I like the panels a little further apart. But you should do what you think looks best. There are no rules, so do what you like. Try doing some test with more spacing and another with less spacing. Which is more fun for you to read?

Hi Walter Ostlie I was wondering how Webtoon pay more than one creator? Do they split the same amount they would give one creator or do they pay them both they're own amount, maybe not 100% each but maybe they pay them 60% each. I would love if you could clarify this, I want to know what more than one creator would get out of this.
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 3 жыл бұрын
That's just something that would be worked out in the contract. You'd have to agree to the amounts. You could have the split or you could have one person get all the money and then they are in charge of splitting the money to people they hire. You won't get 60% each, you could get 50% each or 60/40%
