What Catches More Carp, Corn or Boilies? (Shore Fishing for Carp)

I'm here with Antonio, the boatless angler today fishing for carp. When it comes to fishing the shore lines, there's a lot of great boatless angler opportunities for carp fishing, especially along the shores of Lake Erie Ontario.
Today we're running a T-Turn sliding sinker rig, complete with a standard sinker with lines to two hooks. Although today we're trying something special with bait. Normally we would fish with corn, however since many states and provinces do not allow corn as bait, we figured we're put different baits to the test to find out if people are "missing out" if they are unable to use corn as bait.
We aim to answer the question: what catches more carp, corn or boilies?
When it comes to fishing line, today we're spooled up with ThunderBraid with a ThunderCarbon leader. One great advantage to using braided fishing line when fishing for carp, is that you can add more line to your spool - which helps with those powerful carp make a run for it.
We had a tremendous day on the shore today as we landed a surprising amount of carp.
Which do you think was better, corn or boilies? The answer might surprise you.
If you'd like to get your own T-Turns or ThunderBraid, you can get them here.

Here is another tip I've learned from carp fishermen in Europe. When you are fighting with them and bringing them in, try lifting out their head for a few seconds. They breathe in air more than they can handle and tire faster. For them, it's the equalent of pushing your head underwater after running a mile. Another thing I've noticed - Some bigger carp (over 20lbs) fight less than a younger (10-15lbs). I would say carp in the the 8-20 lbs range are the strongest fighters. Some of the capital size carps come in like pulling a big snapping turtle. But I'm sure there exceptions to this theory, it's just what I've observed over 30 years of fishing.

F Szabo I agree on your size/fight comparison, now do the same in a fast flowing river and the fight from the carp is doubled

To euge yoon - just be sure to trim your tag ends on each knot and also, that one lie is longer than the other - if for some reason your line wrap (i..e you could have line twist which causes that) you should be able to just easily pull them apart :)

I will definitely use these tips when i go fishing because i fish at lake simcoe and my dad and I kept seeing fish jumping around us. At first we thought they were bass but we got a closer look at them and noticed that they were carp. They wouldn't bite our worms and they looked quite large so I'm gonna try using corn and a circle hook with this sort of rig and hopefully land one of those jumpers. Great video and you should get a bigger net :)

Hey Ivo, it's Case. That was AWESOME catching that carp and that bullhead on two different baits on the same rod! At La Linda on the Rio Grande, I've caught a 14-pound common carp on a hand line with a night crawler, although it was meant for catfish. You should try a "Corn VS Night Crawler" match and see which one the carp goes for first. It would be cool. : )

Thundermist Lures or Ivo, I purchased the t-turn swivels and fished with the exact setup that you used in the video, but the two hook setup constantly tangled even with the t-turn. I was using a 2 oz bank sinker with the t-turn connected to two braided lines underneath and went through hell trying to untangle every knot and tangle after every cast. What did I do wrong?

I've gone over to boilers and braided line, when I was younger I fished competitively, now just relaxation and fun. Boilies and braid only, not catching as much as when I was more flexible with my methods, but so much easier, after 40 years of fishing still working out the right time to strike I believe no one gets that right always need more experience in that department and still I screw it up every so often, Boilies save me much of that stress

Hi Ivo, I'm wondering if a fluorocarbon leader is necessary when carp fishing. If I use a 3 way swivel, can I use mono or even braid for the line leading to the hooks? And what pound test would you recommend for the line leading to the hook?
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 9 жыл бұрын
iPwnisher Definitly suggest not using braid to your hook - please use mono or fluoro as carp as very suspicious in nature and you want to be sure they do not see your line (fluoro is best) and I like to use heavier line for carp 20 lb test :)
@fredstratton3079
@fredstratton3079 9 жыл бұрын
iPwnisher Along with the answer Ivo gave something to consider is that Fluorocarbon sinks to the bottom. As Ivo stated the carp are easily spooked and there is less chance of that happening if the line is on the bottom where they won't swim into it.

Quick question from a rookie carp fisherman: In a situation where you want to cast farther out than you can throw extra chum, should you just put extra bait on your hook? You guys were casting out a decent distance, yet obviously you can't throw chum out that far. So is that what you were doing? Just adding extra bait to each hook?
@thundermistlures

i think carp like corn better because of the oils and not a lot of other fish species like boilies so that is why the bullhead got the corn

Why do people say don't release them back into the water? Same thing at my local pond, I heard people saying they wanted to get them out.
@deanwinchester7179
@deanwinchester7179 9 жыл бұрын
airsoftsupersnake It's mainly the asian carp (invasive species) that people want to get rid of versus these common carp. At a local pond or fishery they may want to get rid of them just so there is less competition for other fish they want to focus on like bass or sunfish.

+Dean Winchester All carps are invasive species, both common carps and Asian carps. There was no carp fish in America in the past because the entire carp family was evolved after Africa and America continents set apart. The only carp-like fishes that are native to America are suckers and buffalo fishes.

What's the difference between a common carp and Asian carp
@thundermistlures
@thundermistlures 8 жыл бұрын
+Joe Carpenter Hi Joe....the common carp have been around for many years here in North America, but the Asian Carp are invasive. Another difference is that the Asian Carp will jump out of the water if they sense danger....they can also grow to be over 100 lbs

i am pretty sure the only fish in my lake are carp, but nobody knows it. the water is always brown with particulate matter and we got alot of algae. all the other fish are very small for the area, perch are never more than .5lbs and pike and bass are at most 1.5lbs. its a big lake, about 15km long and 1km wide. i never found a fisherman that fished for anything other then walleye where i live. the province did many biology survey and found the walleye population is dead and 100% of maturing walleye are caught in the first year they are able to reproduce.
