Coming off of a berth in the national championship, the Washington Huskies have now found themselves caught in the middle of the coaching carousel drama as Nick Saban has retired from the University of Alabama, opening up the country's top coaching job. To nobody's surprise, one of the top candidates available is Washington's Kalen DeBoer. Where does he fit among the school's list of candidates? Why can’t the Huskies be a program where coaches want to stay? They need to increase spending all around. Stop spreading the wealth so much, even if you have to make cuts in other sports. With all of the corporations in the Seattle area, find your Nike. The only way I’d be okay with this is if Peterson became the head coach again. He’s loyal and took Washington to the playoffs. If UW could get Grubbs to stay, and Peterson took over as head coach, I think it would be a great program.

Yeah, but Washington doesn’t have the money that Oregon does. Even with all of the major corporations in the Seattle area, we don’t have a Nike. I think they’re just two different scenarios. Sark left after getting us out of the dark Tyrone Willingham days. I can see it happen again. Only way that I’d be okay with this is if they could talk about Peterson into being the HC again, and get Grubbs to stay as OC. Peterson is super loyal. Stayed with Boise after all of those offers. And he loves Washington, although I really can’t understand why. Can’t understand why people love Oregon either, but unlike with Washington, Lanning is in Eugene, not Portland, so that’s a little different. The Seattle area is a dump now.

There's definitely going to be a question about DeBoer's recruiting chops, or lack thereof. He had an amazing roster come together, but I think there's a feeling out there that the stars sort of aligned for him in terms of personnel -- in other words, people are expecting Oregon with their top-10 classes to slot up into to top tier of of the B1G for years to come, and people really are _not_ expecting that of Washington. They _do_ expect top-10 and top-5 classes down there in Alabama. This is a big reason why everyone had Lanning way up on the top of the list. UW is ranked in the mid-30s for 2024 in the recruiting rankings, with, what, 6 or 7 four-stars? That's just not great for a team that played for a title. By contrast, Oregon has 21 four-stars lined up for 2024.
@collind91
@collind91 6 ай бұрын
Size of class makes a huge difference. Roughly 50% of the class at UW for ‘24 was 4* and that is the theoretical requirement for success. And how many Oregon recruits from previous year have transferred out? You can tell me that you’re “always competing” and “recruiting like the $EC” but you hamstring yourself by having a bunch of inexperienced and physically less mature mercenaries on your roster against a team full of 22 & 23 year old players who have built up and have grown man strength. Culture matters, and roster construction matters. Oregon’s fancy roster lost to UW twice this year, and in 2022 UW beat them with even less talent on their roster.
@NothingButSilicone

@@collind91Question is, would any of that have happened without Penix? I think a lot of luck is involved in college football. It isn’t as if every FBS team in the entire country was fighting for him from Indiana. Washington would have still been good with someone else at quarterback, but I’m pretty certain they wouldn’t have been 3-0 against the Ducks, and 14-1 this year.
@collind91
@collind91 6 ай бұрын
@@NothingButSilicone who gets credit for recruiting Penix though? Shouldn’t it be the guy who brought him in, almost immediately, and further developed him, and kept him healthy for this two-year run? Is it luck that it all lined up for all that time? Would they have had the same success if they’d managed to get Jake Haener to come back to UW after blowing up at Fresno playing for DeBoer? No way to say, but DeBoer and his staff DID get Penix and coached him through his success. Would Oregon have been as good these last couple of years if Bo Nix had not gone to Oregon? He was an also-ran cast-off from Auburn that didn’t really excite many people when he transferred to Oregon. But he played better and ran the systems that the staff at Oregon put him in and took Oregon to solid success. Would Tyler Shough or Ty Thompson have done the same?

This is going to be an unpopular opinion and it is based on very little knowledge of coach Deboer. I understand he has a history of turning around teams in a short time, or maybe lifting them up. This is the mark of a great coach.But what I saw of his post game interview after the loss to Michigan made me totally sour on him. He only mentioned Michigan once and almost in passing. No giving credit to the obviously better team, no credit to any of the Michigan players or staff. Instead it was all about him and his team.They believed they could win. That is important but why bring that up after you had lost? Penix also said essentially the same thing, that they believed they could win. Now that in itself is a good coaching job. Getting your team to believe they can win is a real advantage. But the lack of humility is a very, very bad look.
@collind91
@collind91 6 ай бұрын
Because they felt like they beat themselves, which they did plenty of. Penix played poorly, bad run fits put them down 14, and injuries kept them from competing their best. These guys are competitors and especially Penix’s play was a major reason why we couldn’t claw our way back into it. Those picks were back breakers, we had momentum coming out of the half and the later one killed all chance of coming back. Penix and the offense, NOT the defense, cost us that game.
@cxBuck
@cxBuck 6 ай бұрын
@@collind91 I agree with all you said, and add that it was the Michigan defense that was at least as much responsible. You have to give credit to your opponent if it would have taken your very best effort to compete with them. One thing about teams with dominating defense is they don't always win pretty. Michigan's offense scored 33 but they could have won it 20-13. I did see the end of both Oregon games and Washington's speed was impressive. And their defense held when they needed to.

The good news: Bama wants someone who can recruit. DeBoer's recruiting isn't matching his success. Many Bama boosters care about that. DeBoer makes them nervous in that category. The bad news: Mario and Jimbo recruit at playoff levels, but perform at mediocre levels. Bama wants both: on field coach and recruiter. But they know they value an actual coach over a great recruiter. they might be tolerant on recruiting prowess. Most don't know that Bama doesn't have NIL money like Texas, FSU, Oregon or others. Saban/Bama paid NIL money but nowhere near the top and most are arguing that's why Saban left and why Bama was declining. They depended on ESPN hyping them up and providing cash (ESPN literally owns stock in the SEC and get cash when the SEC succeeds). Following money leads to truth and ESPN is owned by Disney and Disney is broke going borderline bankrupt. It matters, The cash has dried up. So, personally, I think DeBoer should stay. I think Bama, and frankly most of the SEC, is declining. Dynasties don't last. Odds are much higher the next coach at Bama underperforms. Odds are, it doesn't go well. Odds are close to zero any coach can match Saban's success. The bar is set too high at Bama. Its really not the dream destination ESPN tries to sell on everyone. Its still at the top, but declining.

Sorry if this pisses y’all off but we should be happy for KD. This is the cream of the crop job. Every coach dreams of this. If you can’t understand why he’d take this job then you didn’t actually like coach, Y’all just liked what he did for us and that ain’t cool. If he goes I wish him nothing but the best and all the success. If he stays then let’s run it back but regardless go dawgs⚪️🟣
