I talk about why George Lucas would have wanted the Sequel Trilogy version of Luke Skywalker. Luke Skywalker is easily the most contreversial asspect about the sequel trilogy, however, I belive that what we got with Luke skywalker and the sequel trilogy is what George Lucas would have wanted

That was from Pablo Hidalgo. And yet Mark Hamill said something totally different - he said that Luke died in Lucas's sequels in EPISODE 9 instead, which storywise I'm more inclined to believe.

@@briishbananabread that depends on who you believe in the Roshomon sequence of the film. Luke says he thought about killing Ben, but chose not to. Kylo gives a different take and says that Luke tried to kill him. So who do you believe? Luke or Kylo? I believe Luke, but a lot of fans seem to believe Kylo, which is interesting to me.

I get the message they were trying to send here that you can learn from past failures but the issue I have with Luke is that we don’t really see how he failed the first time. Episode 6 seems to imply that he has moved beyond the ways of the prequel Jedi and did something they never could: bring anakin back to the light side. So I just find it weird that Luke somehow makes the same mistakes as Yoda and obi-wan and has Ben turn to the dark side for unknown reasons off screen. And he now doesn’t believe his nephew can be saved even though last time we saw him he believed his father could be redeemed when no one else could. Rey for some reason is the one reminding him that a Jedi saved Vader even though he literally lived that exact moment. So I think it should be the other way around and he should be the one convincing her that Ben can be saved. And Luke believing the legacy of the Jedi is failure seems to contradict one of the first things obi-wan told him about the Jedi: that they were around for a thousand generations. So by the time of the prequels ya they got arrogant but only after their enemy the sith had been seemingly dead for a millennium.

and luke didnt go to ben with intent to kill he went to check his mind because of his questionable behavior and thats why leia sent him thete in the first place. Luke saw Kylo would kill Han, Leia & the students if he didnt act he'd be responsible for kylo doing it, either way he fails its litetally spelled out in the movie, You can have an opinion but its not correct. Ppl say luke saw light in vader but all it took was to threaten turning her to the dark to go from i will not fight you to almost killing him. and he went to bespin to save han & her. Luke will do anything for his family. but what happens when family hurts family? its the least thing hes expecting & the main thing hes not prepared 4

found this online Lucas has described Luke’s love for his father being the same unconditional love that the Jedi were encouraged to have from the beginning. Luke had faith in his father but he did not love him in The same sense of having attachment to him. Not to mention that the scene in the office was meant to mirror RotJ, Luke was given a choice of killing Vader to save Leia after he threatened to go after her, he chose not to let his attachment to her drive him into the same hole as his father.

TLJ was not hated by twelve-year-olds, it was (and is) hated by people who were twelve forty years ago. :-) Well, not all of course, but many of them did not grow up. They wanted Luke to kick ass, not to leave a powerful message to them or the galaxy. After the Rebels won, there were no more stormtroopers in my version of the third trilogy. Episode VII, VIII, and IX would take ideas from what happened after the Iraq War. "Okay, you fought the war, you killed everybody, now what are you going to do?" Rebuilding afterwards is harder than starting a rebellion or fighting the war. When you win the war and you disband the opposing army, what do they do? The stormtroopers would be like Saddam Hussein's Ba'athist fighters that joined ISIS and kept on fighting. The stormtroopers refuse to give up when the Republic win. They want to be stormtroopers forever, so they go to a far corner of the galaxy, start their own country and their own rebellion. There's a power vacuum so gangsters, like the Hutts, are taking advantage of the situation, and there is chaos. The key person is Darth Maul, who had been resurrected in The Clone Wars cartoons - he brings all the gangs together. Darth Maul trained a girl, Darth Talon, who was in the comic books, as his apprentice. She was the new Darth Vader, and most of the action was with her. So these were the two main villains of the trilogy. Maul eventually becomes the godfather of crime in the universe because, as the Empire falls, he takes over. The movies are about how Leia - I mean, who else is going to be the leader? - is trying to build the Republic. They still have the apparatus of the Republic but they have to get it under control from the gangsters. That was the main story. It starts out a few years after Return of the Jedi and we establish pretty quickly that there's this underworld, there are these offshoot stormtroopers who started their own planets, and that Luke is trying to restart the Jedi. He puts the word out, so out of 100,000 Jedi, maybe 50 or 100 are left. The Jedi have to grow again from scratch, so Luke has to find two- and three-year-olds, and train them. It'll be 20 years before you have a new generation of Jedi. By the end of the trilogy Luke would have rebuilt much of the Jedi, and we would have the renewal of the New Republic, with Leia, Senator Organa, becoming the Supreme Chancellor in charge of everything. - George Lucas Hermit Luke was not The Luke George intended in his sequels. Let’s put this sequel trilogy, Disney Star Wars fan misconception to bed. Case closed.

@@thegoldman25 he wouldn’t have. That’s a misconception. Lucas wanted Luke to be The Next Ben Kenobi, Mentor Figure in his sequel trilogy, the exact opposite of what was done.This jaded Luke concept started with JJ Abrams, Michael Ardnt & ended with Rian Johnson. People believe this came from Lucas based on some concept art he approved when he was still a consultant after Disney bought Star Wars before leaving when he realized they weren’t gonna make his movies.

@@bendu8282, first of all, Micheal Arndt did not approve of this idea for Luke. He was the one who actually wanted to use George's ideas for Episode Vll, and he got kicked off the project for it. Jar Jar Abrams and Mr. Bubblehead were the ones who decided Luke should be a jaded old asshole living on some rock because... reasons. Second of all, I feel like they could've given Luke a flaw in the Sequels, but if they did, it should've been his main flaw from the EU: His insecurity. From the Thrawn Trilogy up until the end of the Dark Empire series, Luke was incredibly insecure about his ability to actually train a new generation of Jedi. He simply didn't think he would be able to do it, and it took him actually falling to the Dark Side and becoming Palpatine's apprentice (I know, I know. The Dark Empire series was something else) for him to overcome that insecurity and convince Luke that he could and should restart the Jedi Order. Why couldn't that have been his arc in the Sequels?!

@The Gold Man, I actually like your points. I will be honest that I still don't like Luke in episode 8, but I do see the value you pointed out. For ME, (key word me) the reason I feel sad when watching like in it is b/c I know there is no real perfect way that will serve the story yet give us a positive Luke. Basically, I (again, just me) see the whole star wars saga as 85 percent tradgty, wether you wanna say order 66, ANAKIN'S turn, rouge one, SOMEwhat kannans death, ashoka's guilt toward anakin, obi-wan guilt (which will surely be explored in the kenobi show), and what a lot of these things (sad things) have j common is that they will resolved or at least positively influenced by Luke. What I am saying is so much bad happens in star wars (which is why ROTJ ending is so impactful) Luke is the one who actually needs to and is okay to just succeed with flaws, but OVERALL SUCCEED. Also that yoda, anakin, and obi-wan are specifically choosen by the Force to be ghosts to help Luke grow. So the fact that all this is set up for him to not really GROW BEYOND THE FAILURE of these force ghosts for me I just feek depressed and kinda hopeless. I know Luke stepping up at the end of TLJ should help resolve this, and it does a little, but then I just kinda feel like okey-dokey adachokey. Anyways, still a realy good video, and I was wondering if you know of any places online that I can talk with Star wars fans civilly even though we can disagree? @@kaimarquez8046, "there is no real perfect way that will serve the story yet give us a positive Luke." Here's a thought: Luke could've had the arc he had in the EU, where he had a major insecurity over whether or not he was capable or worthy of training a new Jedi Order, and by the end of his arc he would realize that he was indeed capable of doing so. You can have a flawed Luke in a way that doesn't utterly destroy his character. You just have to be smart about it. Something which J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson are clearly incapable of doing.

In retrospect, saying that this is what Lucas wanted is kind of misleading. It was VERY early concept art and George just gave it his seal of approval. That may sound like proof of what he wanted, but if you look over concept art from the prequels, he gave lots of other seals of approval to art that was never utilized in the final film. Not to mention, we now have more details from Lucas himself about what he wanted to happen in his sequels, none of which paints the picture of the Luke from either the concept art nor TLJ

I understand your perspective and it seems like many who liked the sequels are already popping up everywhere but for me. It was just too disjointed, confusing, annoying, characters I loved had such weird changes and I hated it, the ending was... I don’t even know and this is coming from someone who avoided Star Wars for 17 years of being on this earth and finally watched it all of them last last year. I knew I’d like the originals and came out loving them, I went into the Prequels with low expectations and OT knowledge but came out... really liking some and loving one so much it made me cry just like Return of the Jedi did, that film was Revenge of the Sith. When it came to the sequels I had no expectations and watched them late last year (Fire sticks are nice for not having to go to the theater) my No expectations attitude granted me anger, confusion, and annoyance. I watched plenty of videos like this weather it was critiquing or explaining and I couldn’t like them I really tried but they don’t work with me. I’m not going to talk about Ben’s wasted potential, Rey’s overpowered...ness, Luke’s sudden murder attempt just seemed so out of character for me, sure he was flawed but at this point he’s not the arrogant boy from Empire, he’s the level headed Jedi that saved the second most evil person in the galaxy. Obviously I’m probably just stuck in the past but this Luke felt strange, it just seemed utterly strange, And throwing this in again Luke showing up to help a random Sith Trooper and showing him what a Jedi really is inspired the trooper and gave him hope. I don’t know man but this just my view. I guess my road for Star Wars just ends with the originals, Prequels, and extended lore. Btw Rian saying Luke should’ve beaten Vader in Empire gave me little hope for his Star Wars Trilogy... and now it’s gone

I really have to disagree with you here, man. When you say Luke was flawed, sure, we can agree to that point, but despite that flaw, he never once believed that Vader was so evil, that he couldn't be turned back to the light. So how in the hell could Luke think that BEN was beyond redemption?? It just doesn't make any sense to me. A man who was so twisted and evil, that he killed younglings, and got off on killing and torturing people, just because they inconvenienced him, FOR DECADES, yet Luke still saw the good in him. I'm sorry, I just can't accept that he would think his own nephew could be so dark, that he's beyond saving, to the point Luke has this insane lapse in judgement, that he would even THINK about killing his nephew. Just... No. And to suggest that others would think the same way, I have to vehemently disagree.
@thegoldman25
@thegoldman25 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue otherwise, Luke had no interest in redeeming Vader until he learned he was his father, why do you think he screamed no so loud when he learned the truth. My guess is that sometime shortly before return of the Jedi did he “sense” good. When it comes to Ben there are so many misconceptions. Its not that he saw Ben as irredeemable, it’s that when he found out he panicked and those 5-10 seconds ruined everything. As he said, it was beyond anything he ever imagined. I think that’s a very human thing to do but everyone interprets this scene differently

You definitely changed my mind about Luke in TLJ. Before I couldn’t understand why Luke wanted the Jedi to end but now that I think about it it completely makes sense. The Jedi made a big mistake in the prequels but not seeing the Sith Lord they were trying to find was right under their noses. One last example is when Luke tosses Anakins lightsaber it did not seem like Luke would do that. But I now realize why he did that. The last time he saw that saber was when he found out his father was Darth Vader and when he lost his hand. So to me it makes sense. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk!

But the whole story of Return Of The Jedi was that Luke managed to learn from the mistakes of the Prequel-era Jedi. Instead of killing Vader (like Yoda and Obi-Wan wanted), he sacrificed himself to save his father and turn him back to the Light Side, which he succeeded at. And yeah, Luke seeing Anakin's lightsaber, given all that it meant would be pretty heavy for him. But to have him comedically toss it over his shoulders and walk away is just insulting.

"What" and "why" Geogre Lucas wanted are irrelevant, because the problems are not the "what" and "why", but the "how", and Lucas would've definitely done things in such way that they actually make sense. The problem with Luke in TLJ isn't that he's jaded. The problem is on the one hand that they don't do anything with that concept, and on the other hand, is that they had the nerve to pretend this age old clishé, that they had managed to spectacularly screw-up, was a perfectly executed and oh-so-original direction. Compared to Peter B from Spider-verse (who is the exact same charater-archetype, in the exact same archetypical story), it's blatantly obvious how badly executed Luke's "story-line" is. Whereas the reasons for Peter B's jadedness are explored adequetly, right at the moment of his introduction, and he rediscovers his passion through teaching Miles, in TLJ 1: we don't learn what made Luke jaded until his second to last scene, and even then, the explanation is a load of bullcr*p. Not because "Luke wanted to kill his nephew for a thought crime". But because they opt for telling instead of showing, which is the cardinal sin of storytelling. Luke claims that he saw darkness in Crylo Crap during his training, right? Well how about you show us that darkness, instead of the utterly irrelevant Canto Bight sh*t? Show him lash out and almost kill a fellow student who bested him during a lightsaber fencing practise for example, and show that Luke was barely able to stop him! We can immediately better relate to Luke's decision to invade the privacy of his nephew's mind, and his instinctive reaction of "kill this bastard" and his immediate regret. 2: He doesn't rediscover his passion through teaching Rey. Instead he's given a ridiculously hypocritical and self-contradicting peptalk by Yoda. Seriously how fcking stupid one has to be, to write down a character uttering a fortune cookie like "Greatest teacher failure is" (which to be fair is kinda true), and immediately follow it up, with the same person (Yoda) telling that MaRey Sue already knows everything Luke does not, eventhough MaRey Sue has not experienced a single failure across these two movies??? And I'm saying this as someone who actually thinks TLJ is by far the best film in the rehash-trilogy. Which honestly says more about how awful the other two are, than about how good this one is.

If Luke cares so much about his loved ones that he’s briefly ready to kill his own nephew to protect them, why would he just fuck off to another planet and leave them behind in their hour of need? This is why Luke shouldn’t really be that shocked to learn that Han is dead, because what else did he think could happen by leaving Kylo and Snoke to do as they please? You might say that Luke is too depressed to think straight. My headcanon though is that he got serious brain damage when Kylo made the hut fall on him. lol

In all honesty the idea of Luke a crazy hermit was prevalent in Lucas’s ideas for his sequel trilogy but the reasoning behind Luke’s transformation in this sequel trilogy to me does not work.He debates for a moment of killing his Nephew. That is nothing like Luke at all. He would not debate killing his nephew because of visions of him falling to the Darkside he would try to help his nephew even more see the ways of the Jedi and The Force. If this is what he debated then he should have had no problem considering killing his Father. The only reason why he strikes against him is because Vader threatens to harm his sister and it triggers Luke’s Anger. At that time he was young and still had to learn control but he always believed in giving others a second chance including his friends and family. The idea that Luke would debate harming his Nephew over a vision of what wasn’t when he forgave a man that harmed him and his friends for years tells me that there is something wrong with the reasoning behind Luke’s fall. George with his story team came up with the idea of Luke being a crazy old hermit hiding in the cave over the betrayal of a student in his order but in this it shows that while Kylo did destroy his order if the only reason why he did it was because Luke attempted to kill him then this issue heavily falls on Luke. If he knew that Ben had connections with Snoke he shouldn’t have given in to darkness to solve his problem. That is not Luke. Luke would have tried to Save his Nephew before he fell just like his father. I’m not saying Luke is perfect but what I am saying is these are traits of his character that Rian did not focus on when bringing the reason for why Luke had turned. If the flashback was longer and a little more fleshed out on Luke trying to help Ben and him constantly refusing and embracing more of the Darkside then Ben doing evil things and corrupting his Jedi Order with temptation than this scene would maybe feel more developed but it wasn’t. The idea that Ben did nothing bad before this moment or gave into the Darkside and was just conflicted on the inside like Anakin was then this just does not work in my opinion. If you want to bring up Luke’s struggles as a Master of a Jedi Order and his struggles with Ben show that. That scene alone did not justify Luke for a lot of people. In order to give a character an arc you have to show the transformation clearly and consistently with consistency instead of showing a mistake that is out of character from the character we know and not explaining why that error was made within the character. The idea of Luke in this film was similar to what George seem to have in mind but it missed the mark and overall created a version of the character that people could not relate to or sympathize for without a clear reason for why he changed. (This is just my opinion on the matter but feel free to tell me how you feel about it. Your video was very well edited and I do like your references and message but I had to give my opinion on the matter.)

Star wars isn't supposed to be realistic, otherwise there wouldn't be sounds or consistant gravity in outer space. What they didn't realize is people care about him because he was well written before, not just because he was the "main character" nobody cares about a bland main character.
