Rey from the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy is one of the most complex characters in Star Wars. The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker depict Rey as a very flawed character, yet many Star Wars fans still seem to hate her. In this video, I do a deep dive into the psychology of Rey from the Sequel Trilogy.

I'm speechless. You nailed it. May I add one thing: In The Force Awakens, Rey watches, very sadly, a ship taking off and wishes her parents returned. In The Rise of Skywalker, Rey watches, happily, her mentors spirits and fulfills the desire of two parental figures coming back for her. She let the light guide her as Maz advised. She healed her inner child.

"At it's core the sequel trilogy is about a new generation of characters living in the shadow of the generation that came before" Actually, if you look all the trilogies (the original, the prequels and the sequels), this theme is present in all of them. Each one is about a new generation dealing with the legacy by the old generation, as well the mistakes and sins commit by it. In the prequels, the new generation is represented by Anakin, as he start as young well meaning slave, who dream about be a jedi and free his people. He was inspired by the jedi and their stories. However, as he grow-up he became more delusional with the jedi ways to the point he betrayed them and became Darth Vader. It was the old generation failure that result in Anakin's fall. In the original trilogy, the new generation is represented by Luke, who goes from a average farm boy to join the rebellion and go against the empire and Vader, his father, who represents the mistakes of the old generation. In the sequel, the new generation is represented by Rey and Kylo Ren, both inspire by Luke's legend. However while Kylo end up being inspired by his grandfather and decides to ignore the past and become a sith of his own (to the point he even kills Snoke, his master), Rey learn from the past and the old generation (represent by her interactions with Han, Leia and Luke) while trying to find her own place in the new generation.

I love this analysis, and I've honestly never thought about it in this way. I have mainly focused in the way the sequels use this thematically, but I find it interesting how your point makes it clear that ever generation must grow past the mistakes of the one before it. Great stuff, man (or woman, etc. Idk)

@@bigsexy4956 "Great stuff, man (or woman, etc. Idk)" Actually, dude! Thanks. I think this theme also applies to the expand universe as well. The whole Ahsoka's arc in Clone Wars is about her not just growing as jedi but also discovering the failures of jedi order and in the end choosing to leave it and become her own warrior.

I feel like the reason that the force is easy for Rey to use is because, not only is she apart of dyad that sees two people as one force user, but she is some who, despite the facts, BELIEVED her parents would come back. It is that strong belief that is needed to use the force. LUKE: "I don't believe it" YODA: "And that is why you fail"

Great point! Rey has a can do attitude towards life and that helped . Luke was whinny and negative. I think much of it had to do with Rey having to fend for herself, so she was aware that she could (or needed to) handle whatever was thrown at her. Luke on the other hand was a molly coddled by his aunt growing up. So he didn't have to try. So when he was faced with difficulties he just starts bellyaching.

@aidenburgess217

Only problem with the Adopting the skywalker name shows the cyclic nature of trauma. the idea that she must belong somewhere and NEEDS to belong in order to feel complete. the idea that the skywalker ranch gives her the name for the purpose of an alias cements the name is logical however when pondered over it presents the sequel trilogy as a tragedy instead of a triumph. Starts the trilogy alone on a desert planet without a sense of self worth and belonging Ends the trilogy alone on a desert planet without a sense of selfwoth only belonging to the skywalker name.

@@vladlenvolkov9034 Except Rey does have flaws. Her severe abandonment issues forced her to remain on Jakku in a naive belief that the parents who abandoned her would come back for her. Her impulsiveness caused her to smack Finn and immediately suspect him of being a thief for wearing Poe's jacket before letting him tell his side of the story. She refuses to even touch the lightsaber at first because finding out that she has the Force would force her (no pun intended) to abandon her previous lifestyle and let go of her naive belief. Deprived of the imaginary promise that her parents would come back for her, she then starts searching for surrogate parent figures that will give her a place in the galaxy and her life meaning, first with Han and then with Luke. You would understand all of that if you paid attention to the dialogue and visual storytelling. The end of TLJ made it look like she was going to stop doing those things and finally try to find that place for herself instead of waiting for someone to give it to her on a silver platter, but because the haters threw a collective Kylo Ren temper tantrum online because she conflicted with their superficial understanding of how the Force works, she was made a Palpatine in an attempt to pander to the complaints. The one positive thing that came out of this retcon is Rey Skywalker because it's the closest thing we'll get to where her story was headed for at the end of TLJ. Your inability to sympathize with a young woman who's lived most of her life on her own on a hostile world where she had no one to rely on but herself and was forced to learn to adapt to her environment in order to simply SURVIVE, painting in a few minutes a hundred times more convincing picture of a slave than Anakin ever did throughout the whole freaking Tatooine arc, speaks volumes of your values as a human being.

In your far-fetched past? What makes you think that it was so written in the novel? 1 your disadvantage vs: SHE DEFEATED A SITH APPRENTICE WHO EASILY KILLED THE JEDI ACADEMY, SHE DEFEATED THE SITH LORD'S GUARD, SHE DEFEATED DARTH SIDIOUS WITH TWO SWORDS, and all this without training and preparation. (Wielding a lightsaber is not about pushing objects at a distance) I empathized with Anakin ,NOT BECAUSE HE WAS A SLAVE, but because he got his freedom, but lost his mother in the process. When he promised to come back and free her... but he didn't make it. What could be more tragic than an unfulfilled promise to save a loved one who is now dying in your arms... and all because of the fact that the hero was late. - and all this is shown in the movies. While the tragedy of Rey that you write to me, you make up AS a SUPER TRAGEDY. Losing your loved ones is much scarier than what can happen to you.

@@vladlenvolkov9034 *sigh* "I know all about waiting. [...] For my family. They'll be back. One day." "Dear child, I see your eyes. You already know the truth. Whomever you're waiting for on Jakku, they're never coming back. [...] The belonging you seek is not behind you, it is ahead." "You think of Han Solo. You feel like he's the father you never had. He would have disappointed you." "I need someone to show me my place in all of this." Now, you're just making things up. They don't immediately become "super friends": "They were shooting at us." "They saw you with me, you're marked." "Well, thanks for that!" "Hey, I'm not the one who chased YOU down with a stick!" They merely work together to survive the First Order's attack and only become friendly with each other after the fact because of the thrill of victory. Surviving a life-threatening situation together tends to create bonds between people even if they were at odds when they first met. The movie gives you everything you need to know about Rey to sympathize with her. That you failed to pick up on those is your fault, not the movie's. It goes out of its way to depict her daily life by showing the marks in her makeshift home for the purpose implicitly telling you that 1. she has been on this planet and living in those conditions for a long time and 2. everything we saw her do during her introduction scene is what she's been doing for all that time, which, in case you didn't pay attention, is trudging through unstable and dangerous wreckages for spare parts to sell in order to put food on the table at the end of the day. EVERY DAY. And in case the existence of the marks in her home weren't an obvious enough clue, the vision where we see her being abandoned on Jakku reveals that SHE WAS A FUCKING CHILD. WHICH MEANS THAT SHE HAS BEEN DOING THE THINGS WE SAW HER DO IN HER INTRODUCTION SCENE SINCE SHE WAS A FUCKING CHILD. Being abandoned at such a young age BY YOUR OWN FREAKING PARENTS is just as tragic as a young man who failed to keep his promise with his mother, the tragedy of which you're purposefully exaggerating to validate your selfish opinion of Rey. HOW do you NOT sympathize with someone who's had such a shitty life unless you're an idiot who needs their hand held throughout the whole movie with superfluous expository dialogue? First, Kylo isn't a "Sith apprentice", he's a Knight of Ren. Second, he was wounded by a shot from a Wookiee bowcaster that the movie goes out of its way several times to show that it's powerful enough to send a fully-grown man flying several meters back at point blank range while SHE was mostly unharmed and HE WASN'T TRYING TO KILL HER. You also conveniently forgot the fact that even with Kylo in such a state, she spent 90% of the confrontation running away from him and using the environment to slow him down and exhaust him, thereby worsening his already-pitiful state. HE WAS LOSING BLOOD, FOR FUCK'S SAKE. HAD HE BEEN IN NORMAL CONDITION, OF COURSE HE WOULD HAVE DEFEATED HER. First, she doesn't defeat all of the guards on her own like you're making it sound like, idiot. Kylo defeats most of them by himself whereas Rey struggles with two. Second, they are faceless extras void of personality who aren't important to the plot, making them the cinematic equivalent of MMO crunch mobs. THEY. DO. NOT. MATTER. You're only attributing them an imaginary importance to comfort yourself in your undeserved and childish hatred of a character you don't even bother to TRY to understand. Her defeating Darth Sidious or being made a Palpatine wouldn't have happened if you people had been patient with the direction the story was going at the end of TLJ. But instead, you demanded that she be related to an already-existing character to give an artificial and unnecessary explanation to her Force ability, or complaining that killing Snoke made it impossible to continue the story, both of which expose your superficial understanding of the philosophical aspect of the Force or that your imaginations are so limited that you can't come up with a Star Wars story that doesn't have a Palpatine-like villain in it. You have only yourselves to blame for TROS being the way it is.

Adding to this, I am not at all a feminist in modern meaning… I’m really disgusted with how the search for equality and togetherness seen in early feminist movements, something based on love, is being bent into hate for men… Rey feels to me like a traumatized and vulnerable character who faces her trauma through the trilogy and only gets confidence in herself in the very end. Although I’m very happy to accept and love her character as female, nothing about my love for her character came from liking “female empowerment”; Just happy to see a relatable character represent me.

8:54 I never felt that Rey rarely showed feminine features, she quite often showed compassion, empathy, sensitivity, and other characteristics stereotypically associated with women and femininity. Although, it's true that she quite often shown stereotypically masculine qualities as well, I don't think that necessarily makes her a tomboy. To me Rey has an androgynous quality in which she doesn't fit neatly into any gender roles or stereotypes.

@@kobypourciaux1066 The thing with the prequels though is that people are mostly finding the good things about it, and that they understand that George Lucas did have a plan to do something different with the universe, even though the overall execution of these movies was poor. Yet some people tend to overlook the flaws of those movies, which is fine if they care so much. As for the sequels, maybe J.J Abrams had some plan, but it was all thrown out of the window by Rian Johnson, leaving Abrams to rewrite so much for The Rise of Skywalker, which resulted in a generic conclusion.

Very well done and another great video, just love how videos like this put more 'meat' on the story. Taking the name Skywalker is her way of honouring both Luke and Leia (which were their birth names) the man and woman who accepted her and gave her the parenting she missed as a child. It doesn't make sense for her to take on the name Palpatine. In rejecting it, she honours her parents whom themselves rejected the name. And even so her grandfather straight up told her she was nothing to him. So why take on the name? It will be interesting to see if we get a continuation of this story if she takes on the name for political reasons.

This video is excellent and I appreciate your effort for researching all of these things. I learned a lot, even about myself. Thank you! Nonetheless, I disagree on your statement that Kylo is clearly trying to manipulate her. From a certain perspective I can understand why it would seem that way, but I don't think he is manipulative at all towards her. He is her antagonist, but they do find a connection and a common ground, even if just for a brief time. Being a victim of manipulation and abuse himself, his actions and words towards her are awkwardly harsh but he doesn't deceive her or is trying to trick her into something she doesn't want. I saw that you're planning to do a video on him too, so I'm looking forward to what you will find out about Ben Solo's/Kylo Ren's psychology in the future! Also, I appreciate that you're trying to make Rey's ending make sense and I agree that you can say that she finds an identity in the end. However, I have a very hard time being happy about her apparently finding belonging in a family who has completely perished. They're not physically with her anymore. I can't picture her future being a happy one with this ending and it hurts. I just want someone to say to her "You're woth more than what you can give to other people. You deserve love too!" (She-Ra style) and give her happiness after so much bitterness in her life. There were amazing ideas in the Sequel trilogy but I wished it was executed better (I know this is being said a lot). Maybe I would have liked Rey's ending a lot more if there had been a clear line of moments building up towards it. Her taking the Skywalker name felt isolated and awkward instead and I didn't find it rewarding at all. And rewatching or rethinking it didn't make it better either, at least for me personally. But there's still so much I like about the Sequel trilogy and I'm glad you're continuing to spread the love! Keep doing what you do!

I think Rey beating Kylo Ren on Starkiller Base was realistic because Kylo was shot with a crossbow but Rey beating Kylo on the Supremecy and near the Death Star was not a Kylo has far more experience than Rey. @@thegoldman25 Before I watched the video I thought Rey was a Mary Sue but changed my mind but she is still a badly written character. The problem is her flaws have no consequences or negative effects on her. A more realistic reaction in the Last Jedi is Rey joining Kylo Ren on the Supremecy because he showed more support than Luke or the Resistance did. I think the reason why people called Rey a Mary Sue is that she never lost a fight and never suffers consequences for her flaws so it created the illusion that she is a Mary Sue. So when Rey decided to go to the Supremacy the Resistance never suffers because of her decision nor does she face lasting consequences like almost dies or something she actually fares better than Kylo Ren on the Supremecy against the elite guards and Rey shortly after leaving the Supremecy is happy shooting TIE fighters on the Falcon. While Luke was almost killed and is miserable at the end of the Empire Strikes Back If I wrote the trilogy there will be no Starkiller base, Palpatine will stay dead because bringing him back ruined Anakin's sacrifice and bring Andeddu from legends as the villain. He will look like a mummy it will really be cool and also have Luke be a badass Jedi instead of the broken old man he is. I would also have Rey training with a group of students rather then just him and Rey and have her struggle behind her peers but having her work hard and earning the respect of her peers. Just to avoid Luke being Yoda 2.0. It will kind of be like Mulan in the 1998 version. I don't the Sequel Trilogy will be decanonized because that will not be realistic but I think Disney should make a show between Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker to develop Rey, Finn, and Poe better

I really appreciate your video about her character. I do get that she was meant to be written differently from Luke and Anakin, where she has other problems to deal with. However, it doesn’t change much of my opinion on how she was handled, because while she is definitely not flawless, she tends to solve so many of her problems by herself. I am not talking about her psychological problems, I am mostly talking about her physical problems, where she gets out of so many situations without much help. I would be fine with her being a prodigy, and someone who doesn’t feel proud about herself, but it is undermined by so many bad, creative issues in these movies. I think should have taken notes from The Legend of Korra.

Thank you for the video 😊 Rey is an interesting character, however I found that she did not need three movies to develop. I would have liked to learn more about Kylo alias Ben: after all, it's the story of his redemption. I'm not convinced that he wanted to manipulate her, he clearly felt compassion for her and needed her to finally get rid of Snoke. He wanted to find "a new order" with her, and with him being the Dark Side and her being the Light Side they might have been on to something - which was already hinted at by the Force Balance mosaic on the floor of the Jedi temple. I would have a good laugh if the next trilogy would show her either pregnant or with a child, since Ben had his hand on her waist when he revived her. :-) It would give her a family of her own flesh and blood at last, the line of the Chosen One would not die out, and the Jedi's rule that they must not have close connection would become redundant.

There is just one thing i find weird about rey: why is she good an compassionate? She grew up with no parents and in a hostile enviroment. Why would she help a random droid and refuse to sell him for food? I'm just curious Also, how can people not see that unkar plutt was rey's mentor through the first years of her life? She works for him, we saw that she had been a long time in that planet, and if all of that wasn't enough, in rey's vision we saw unkar plutt grabbing little rey's arm after her parents sold her to... take a guess... unkar plutt. So if he needed her to work for him, makes total sense that he teached her a lot of stuff and that she learn others by herslef along the way. Like arya stark. Or ellen ripley, who learned how to use weapons and fight aliens in a very short time, considering she was just a flying officer.
