I've been a strong advocate of Talk That Talk since the beginning, downright dethroning Feel Special as my favorite Twice song of all time. I think it's because I realized immediately what the concept of the era was: Adult Totally Spies. From the 60s sound in the teasers to the clear 60s and 2000s influence in the fashion up to a retro tech spy music video, it was clear to me that Twice decided to recapture what made Totally Spies such an icon of the early-mid 2000s. And to me, it worked beautifully in all the right ways, as if Twice were rebooting Totally Spies right in front of my eyes.

I'm one of those people who instantly loved Talk that Talk. Tbh, being disconnected from the general KPop community at that time was huge for me, coz I was able to have my own opinions about a lotta things, and not be influenced by unnecessary hate from other people. The hype just died down. A lot of people were just following the hype. But if people just listen to this song alone, ignoring what the public thinks, this had the potential to be their best Title Track. Until now, I steer away from any possible negative fans coz it really doesn't help anyone, at all. And I think TWICE being misunderstood was just people Bandwagonning (idk if that's a word lol). IT'S A GOOD AF SONG. Holy sh*t it's so well structured, unlike the simple bass and synths that kpop songs nowadays have. That song actually have decent instrumentals. (such a boomer. I know) And I think them competing with 4th Gens just made it worse, a lot of new groups were devouring the old ones. So yeah, it's inevitable for them to go under the radar. I'm not saying they can't compete with these new groups, but, they're simply at a disadvantage since all the hype is on the 4th gens now. Also WHAT? I didn't know that was an NFT. I don't think a lotta people do.

@@choujimi me being active in the Metal and JPop community made me realize that involvement with all the drama that fandoms make isn't always a good thing, so I did my best to avoid it when stepping into KPop. Problems like these isn't unique to KPop fans. JPop and EVEN METAL/PUNK has these. Had my fair share of fan wars on my old channels. It was not fun. Well, it was fun at first, a bit of banter here and there, but death threats is crossing the line for me. Yea, it might be a luxury, but it came with a cost. I paid with my sanity 😅😂.

I think another factor that might have influenced on the lukewarm recepetion of the song, bcuz in hindsight this comeback happened with the More & More situation all over again, Between 1&2 had the potential to be Twice biggest comeback: - The international Popularity was HUGE for Twice in 2022 - Nayeon has a lot of hype around her due to the success of her solo debut - All 9 members renewed - They embrace the Y2K asthetic - The mini album is probably one of the Best that Twice has ever released (maybe Best if Taste of Love and Feel Special didn't exist) So What went "wrong" IMO it would mainly for a factor: the title track. Tho i love Talk that Talk, it was a retro song when everyone and their grandmother was trying to escape that concept. Now obviously they're still retro songs in kpop that are successful (literally After Like and Forever 1 were released the same month) but looking back, ppl might be tired of Twice doing retro song in 2022 bcuz i would've been felt as "dated" (especially considering that Twice did nothing but retro or retro adjecent title tracks since I Can't Stop Me with the only exception being Doughnut). To put it simply, if More & More was a tropical house pop song in 2020, Talk that Talk was a 80's synth pop song in 2022, when everyone was getting tired of that concept
@tisya_2013
@tisya_2013 Ай бұрын
IMO: Twice Started Doing 80s Retro Concepts in 2019 with fancy. For smth new new (pun intended) but they started doing it a little too much with almost all their tts in 2020 and 2022. Then maybe the jyp creative team prob thought "oh these fans are tired with 80s retro, lets do 70s retro and add some disco for the next title track." and they did. With set me free which wasn't really uhm, a hit

I totally agree. I don't think I fully appreciated Talk That Talk until I was literally at a Twice concert, screaming "tell me what you want, tell me what you need" at the top of my lungs. I still want to scream that when I listen to it now. It makes me so unbelievably happy. And I think your points are definitely huge parts of the problem, but I think another part of the marketing that kinda left me confused was the trailers. I don't even watch JYP trailers most of the time, but you could not avoid onces talking about them on kpop twitter. I thought they had planned something big for this music video, but the different teams and their work never made an appearance, and I wish they would have because I desperately wanted to know more about the entire idea. I love the MV so much now, but it seemed strange to create this really interesting concept and do nothing with it in the end.

This whole deep essay is bizarre to me. I saw the video for Talk That Talk, loved Jihyo and Jeonyeong as I always do, and went on with life. I actually really love the way you said this tbh. I didn't even know it didn't "perform well" especially when I was listening to that album over and over for like the first week it came out LMAO. Plus the music video views being as high as they were (and the countless posts I noticed on how much people really liked it) I never would have thought there would have been any kind of controversy at all. I really agree with you on the "happier enjoying the music as music" because I used to be that fan until I just took a step back and enjoyed the songs for what they were. Songs. I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do with their life or anything and how they should consume music, but I really agree with what you said.

to point 2: I think this is gonna happen more often kinda. It feels like more groups renew and are active for longer so there are way more active groups and groups from many diffrent companies have a level of success that they have stable fanbases. I have seen themis argument that its tine for 3rd gen to step aside and let their juniors shine to the fullest and not still win awards to take that chance from them. I dont agree with that but I think there are Situations where you really notice just how many groups are currently active

I want to say that Twice is the only group i allow myself to watch the MV as it releases, and they are the only group i will preorder an album for. For EVERY other group/artist (not just in kpop), i listen to the song on a streaming platform first while avoiding the teasers as I dont want the dance and visuals from a MV to influence if I like a song. If I like the song ill watch the MV and some dance practices/stages if I liked the choreography. (NMIXX is starting to get the same treatment as twice as I recently realized I like all of their music, but I am still hesitant to commit, especially financially with preorders.) But I digress, when the TTT MV was released, i was still recovering from The Feels. I literally cried while watching the music video for TF when it was released, i was so overwhelmed by how much i instantly loved the song, and that I finally had a twice TT thats originally in english to sing to; i didnt have to hope there would be an English ver, we knew it would be in english! sooo when I watched the music video for TTT, i REALLY liked it, but TF was still being constantly replayed for me..... then slooooowly TTT overtook The Feels and I can safely say it is 100% my favorite twice song now, which was a hard conclusion to come to since i love so many of them. Id even say its just a top 5 song for me period, nothing compares honestly, but The Feels is deservedly in 2nd for fav twice songs :)

It did genuinely feel like a disbandment era all together, looking backwards. In that moment I was honestly so used to TWICE having some type of comeback every single season of each year so much so to the point where I just stopped keeping track of what they were doing. I think what also ultimately chopped off a huge chunk of their fandom was exactly that. TWICE being spammed around too much to the point where every comeback felt less and less special to keep up with. The same for me has happened with both ITZY and SKZ. I just see them so much to the point where sometimes I can't even listen to their music anymore or where I just don't feel like tuning in on new releases. Obviously I do still always check them out, but it's rather out of fomo than anything else. It's not like either of these 3 groups still have an exciting discography going on, because a lot of it feels rushed and/or a lesser copy of their previous hits. Please don't shoot me, I do not hate these groups. I supported all of them respectfully. I feel the general issue here is just JYPE and overworking it's idols to the point where it has become a grind, rather than art being brewed and ultimately after some time shared after a healthy wait for the audience to get excited over it.

idk how this wound up in my recommendations now, but i will ALWAYS put in my 2 cents about Talk that Talk! the M/V showed up on my homepage pretty soon after its release, and i decided to watch b/c i was minorly familiar with kpop then (had some blackpink songs saved; one of my best friends showed me title tracks by itzy, chungha, etc.) but still pretty indifferent. Talk that Talk was the only song i'd heard where i *immediately* fell in love, put it on a playlist, and needed to hear more songs, watch more videos, learn members' names. that put me on the kpop side of youtube & i fell down the rabbit hole. for better or worse, Talk that Talk is literally THE reason behind my intense kpop fandom for the last almost 2 years!!! lol

TTT has always felt like a good bookend to the first part of their career for me. Nostalgic but clear they’re going to experiment. (Side note: Gone is probably my favorite b-side on the album, I would have loved actual promotion.) The second part of their career has felt more experimental and city pop inspired. Which, they’ve earned the right to stray away from super cute concepts as grown women who broke the 7 year curse, even though I’d argue that their concept has always been more “love” than “cute.” I haven’t always loved their career part 2 releases, but god, I absolutely adore One Spark. It’s got a bit of their classic feel but it also feels GROWN UP. It’s got that tinge of nostalgia and feels bittersweet while also being hopeful. It’s got an actual bridge, the vocals are showcased, the choreography actually highlights the subtle details... It is legitimately so, so good and it disappoints me that the fandom seems to have gone the way of TTT in the way that they’re saying they misunderstood it.

Been a Once since ‘Ooh Ahh’. You’re right it’s pretty difficult to explain to newer onces about it feeling ‘disconnected’ (kind of IYKYK). Idk the best i could describe it is it just didn’t hit hard as it should’ve CONSIDERING how monumental (that era) is. It’s as if the end result/JYP/the producers are gaslighting its fans that it’s business as usual even though they were this 🤏 close to disbandment. Like in another universe they would’ve disbanded (TWICE members going their separate ways). Now of course to newer fans /casual listeners they’d be none the wiser

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but Talk that Talk is the song that got me into Twice and therefore K-pop so I’m eternally grateful for her 🥹 I love her, I think she’s amazing (in my top 10 fave songs!) gonna be real honest, I did cry when they performed talk that talk at the concert I went to. I mean, I was kinda crying the whole time bc I’m one of those people but I cried the hardest when they did Knock Knock (my favorite Twice song) and Talk that Talk :,) Talk that Talk is just fun and upbeat and makes me happy which is what I associate from Twice! No other group’s music (with the exception of Ateez with their most Twice-coded song Eternal Sunshine) can lift my mood and put me in good spirits quite like Twice. I find it a shame that Talk that Talk was misunderstood (I didn’t know that it was tbh but I don’t really engage in fandom beyond talking to my friends and little sister about kpop, watching compilation videos, and watching your channel lol) but for the people who get it… we get it. Then the news of them resigning came out, so then I placed this expectation that their next comeback would be this celebratory anthem for Twice and the fans. I will say, I did think that Talk that Talk felt like any other comeback. So I did feel somewhat letdown by it. I did think the song was a bop though. This video honestly gave me a different perspective on things, so that's nice.

Jihyo has said that there was a mistranslation and what they meant was they weren't sure what the reaction to re-signing. To me, Basics, Queen of Hearts, and the rest signaled their intentions to move forward with more fun now that they'd been able to grow and mature with songs like Fancy and Cry for Me. I love this song and album.

Talk that talk was my second most played song the year it came out (only after like could beat it). I’m not that active in kpop online spaces and I was always so baffled when I heard that it flopped and that people didn’t like it . Because like . What ? Have you listened to it? The b-sides? The mv looks fantastic and the dance is so addicting, it’s one of the few kpop dances I learned because of how fun it looked. For me it’s one of twices best releases ever

I think my issue was that I didn't really know what to expect from Twice at that point, as someone who was always more into their Japanese releases, this was just too generic and too much retro, when I was incredibly tired of it and that wasn't what I was expecting at all. Especially when the pause between their comebacks was so long compared to 2021, it just wasn't it for me. After I listened to the b-sides I was pleasantly surprised, how good they were, so I treated Queen of Hearts as if it was the title track and I came to appreciate Talk that talk as the time went by.

I definitely understand that! It seems like more and more people are growing tired of the retro sound in kpop, which is something twice has been doing for quite a while. Single wise, I think moonlight sunrise is the first non-retro track in a long time

As a massive Once that embraces my bias, Between 1&2 was one of my fave mini-albums in the context of Twice going on tour. Every song imo was perfect for a concert performance, and Talk That Talk was literally the concert finale like??? TTT has my whole heart 💜 Edit: It's very similar to when O+T=

I think it makes sense that Between 1&2 was set to be the last release for them as group in case any of the members didn‘t renew their contract. Especially when you listen to Queen Of Hearts. Some lyrics in the song do kinda sound like a goodbye? But I'm so glad all nine renewed cause it was my first comeback as a fan, so I would have been sad if I was so excited for it only for Between 1&2 to be last project by them.

Talk that talk is perfect Twice. I own every version and it’s a total no skip album. The concept was perfect, the choreo and outfits were perfect. I think it was sort of a continuation of every era up until Fancy. After Fancy, their concept started changing, which was totally okay with me(my favorite song of theirs of all time is I Can’t Stop Me so trust me I’m not biased against their newer music) but I know a lot of people missed their old fun concept and music. TTT was like a more mature version of that and they did it perfectly.

wait I'm confused with the whole premise of the video, was TTT not liked by the general public? bc I remember when it dropped everyone was giving it its flowers and loving the LOVE choreo, the looks, the references to their career in retrospect, etc. I don't recall any backlash at all👀, I think the title track that needs to be defended because it was unfairly criticized is Scientist. But I still agree with everything said, I'm only a little confused on why it needed to be said lmao

Honestly it was Talk That Talk and the “dance levels 1, 5, 10 “ video and Momo and Jihyo dance energy that brought me down the rabbit hole of Kpop. I had been a huge fan of Korean R&B and Hip Hop, while liking some songs from groups like Mamamoo, BP, 2NE1 and Big Bang but never understood the pull of KPoP. What made “Talk That Talk” so great was the retro infused synth pop sound of the song and the energy of Twice. More importantly this felt like a nice bridging of the gap between a more western sound and the “cutsey” sound I attributed to Kpop that just didn’t resonate to my western ears. Like one person up above, I was insulated from the hate and hype that came with this song and find that a TT that can bring in new fans, especially to a group as prolific and senior a group (compared to current 4th and 5th gen groups) is a huge boon to a group like twice. It’s just a shame to see that people would say this song was bad, especially within the context of this albums release. I’m but another in the legion of ONCE’s, but this song will forever be my favorite title track because it is the one that made me fall in love with our 9 angels.
