Winterization Kits - what they are, why they are used, and how to install one on a PA38-112 Piper Tomahawk!
This video shows the installation of winterization plates on the oil cooler as well as at the lower exit opening of the cowling to regulate engine temperatures for cold weather operation.

I have my winter kit in the front of the cowl and don't have that big plate on the bottom - may be something to do with my engine being a 112

I own a Piper Cherokee 140 with an O-320 engine. Before my last annual it had an oil screen rather than a spin-on oil filter. At last annual, I added the adapter kit and that included a vermatherm. As I understand it, the vermatherm is essentially a mechanical thermostat that turns oil flow on and off to the oil cooler. So that if the oil temp isn't high enough, it'll turn off the flow to the oil cooler to raise the temp. If the oil temp gets too hot, it sends oil to the oil cooler. Since adding that I don't use the winterization kit any more. In my case the winterization kit was simply a panel that restricted airflow to the oil cooler. I don't have anything blocking the exit of air at the bottom of the cowl. My oil temp stays right at about 180F - even on really cold days. Is my understanding correct? Do you think I still need to add the winterization kit?

I think it depends on what the ambient temperature is where you fly. Where I am, the general limit of "too cold" with the nearby flight school and what a lot of other pilots also use is -20 Celcius (-4 Fahrenheit) for ambient temp on the ground prior to flying. At that temperature it's common to need more than the oil cooler plate to keep temperature up. My Tomahawk is still quite new to me. I have 2 different sized oil cooler plates and that lower plate to experiment with. If I find a combo isn't working I'll swap them around and see where the ideal ambient temperature range is to run each combination of plates and I'll report back in a later video 👍

@@planeswithperry Makes sense. It doesn't get really cold here in Southeastern US. I monitor my oil temp and it's consistently at 180 in cruise - even in the winter.

Hi Perry, just curious, what makes the cabin heat in your plane?

The cabin heat comes from the muffler. The mufflers on general aviation aircraft have a section that's basically a heat exchanger. The heat coming from the exhaust is then directed into the cabin. Because of that, I fly with a carbon monoxide indicator on my panel just in case that muffler cracks and exhaust gets introduced into the cabin. There's also a mandatory yearly inspection where the mufflers are pressure tested to ensure their integrity is ok/safe. That system is light weight and works well with minimum parts compared to what's in an automobile 👍
