I get back out to camp Deadhorse, my new bushcraft camp, and start work on the camp's shelter beginning with in-depth framing with reinforcing supports.
In this video, I finally get back out to camp Deadhorse after some time away filming and editing and get to work on the camp's new shelter. This time, I build the framework complete with reinforcing supports using the spruce bough bucksaw, pine mallet, and the logs cut and collected in the last entry in combination with some interesting bushcraft techniques including a whole bunch of knot work; some even being unique, like my modified Canadian Jam Knot. Notch cutting, square lashing, basic tool crafting, mallet work, axe, saw, and knife use, and more - all in this new video.
Why camp "Deadhorse"?
The camp is named "Deadhorse" due to a nearby and unfortunately passed away feral horse. The cause of death is unknown, but as far as I could tell it was natural cause.
Enjoy, and stay tuned for the next entry. Thanks for watching!

We are in Alaska but from South East Georgia. Camping here is so new to us even though we have been here a few years. My biggest fears are moose and bears coming in on us. Of course we carry bear spray and weapons. Watching your videos gives me many ideas on how to be a little harder to get to at night lol. Nothing is bear proof but if we can make it harder or give our selves time to respond then thats important. I have had moose sneak up on my in the yard several times. Love the content and the education.

While I was filming this video I had a bull moose come grunting right by my camp. I scared it off but it easily could’ve went the other way if it were pissed off enough, haha! Glad you got some ideas from my video! Thanks for watching 🤠

Something lacking is finding water and storage of water for the camp! Also would like to see some hunting especially trapping as even as I have been trapping I always learn from others!
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
That's one of the reasons I am considering not even finishing this camp. The location was nice to build in because of the soft sandy ground, but once the camp is built, it has no practical use. It isn't remote enough, there is no accessible water nearby, no feed for my horses, very little to hunt and trap aside from grouse, etc. As fun as it'd be to camp in, what I want to be focusing on is like you said, hunting, trapping, and show real life out there like gathering and storing water. I can't realistically do that in the location of this camp

@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
It can be! With the rate I'm getting this camp built there will likely be snow on the ground when I use it for the first time. I'm planning to take some time away from editing for a week or two to get it finished, that way I don't have to worry about posting other videos over filming. It might be a few weeks before there's a new video on my channel

Man, awesome stuff and great video to watch. Thanks for the knot explanations, I'm trying to learn more about options and uses. I'm not a structural engineer, but, I wonder if you notched the two tall poles for the upper cross pole to rest in, if that would provide more integrity than relying on cordage. And, the mid-cross pole could have rested on top of the slanted poles for support (notched position would be better, too), possibly eliminating the need for the two vertical support poles in the middle of the room, creating more interior room when completed. I have fallen many times and am keenly aware of gravity, so I look at things a little differently sometimes. I don't mean to be critical, only thinking out loud as if we were sitting around a campfire talking about the project... I'm subscribed and will be interested in how this turns out. Cheers, and peace, from Arizona. Pete
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
I had actually considered a similar idea, but I believe mine was the opposite. Instead of notching the top of the poles for the ridgepole to rest in, my ideas was to square notch the ridgepole and have the poles sit in the notch, but I think I determined that'd just weaken it compared to a solid log, so I decided to just use a square lash. Your idea is much better though, especially if you throw a wooden dowel or nail in the top to hold it all in place. Last November we got 3 FEET of wet snow overnight, so I'd likely still add the middle supports as their only purpose is help distribute the weight in case that happens again. Super great idea though! I might add a small woodshed to this camp at some point, so I'll give that a try, but if not, I'll try it on the next camp I build! Thanks for subscribing and I appreciate the feedback and discussion!
@peterkunka2694
@peterkunka2694 2 жыл бұрын
@@wituikbws Haha, I'm in the Arizona desert so I didn't even think of snow weight. You can add to what you have done already by using two vertical support poles under the cross pole, one at each end where the lash is, parallel to the vertical poles already there. Wedge them under the cross pole and they will support the weight, then add a simple knot to secure them to the vertical poles to keep them in place. Real good discussion and fun project you're building. I'll hit the bell so I get notified of the next video to watch more of the progress. Cheers!

Take the tape off wrap in sinew instead from a hunt! Where is it cracked/damaged on your lever action?
@wituikbws
@wituikbws 2 жыл бұрын
That is an awesome idea! Had never thought about that. It has a small crack on the grip starting at a corner of where the tang is slotted into the stock. It's not bad enough to need the tape, but I wanted to prevent it from getting worse as well as remove the wiggle it was causing. Took the tape idea from a local old time rancher who had gone through a few Marlin stocks himself
