In March of 1911 the New York Times released a brief article describing the terrifying death of a 118 people in a wolf attack. To make matters ever worse the people were returning from a wedding in Russia when the massive pack of wolves attacked. In this episode I simply provide an audio recording for the article which will be part of a larger episode I'll release next.
I have been working on a series inspired by this article on wolf attacks in Russia during the first half of the 20th century. **Spoiler Alert** Folklore and irresponsible reporting practices probably have a fair amount to do with stories like these but we'll examine that soon. For now, just enjoy the story.

I came across a similar story from WW1 on the Russian front. Wolves were so numerous and agrressive the Russians and Germans declared a temporary ceasefire to kill wolves. Now that is a serious wolf problem.

While this very well may be a tall tale, it is remarkable how much more aggressive Eurasian wolves are compared to the new world version. There are hundreds of attacks documented over the last several hundred years.

I have no idea what to make of that. Literal thousands of cases of centuries for Eurasian wolves and in the americas attacks may still be in single digits. It could be that by the time Europeans colonized the America’s guns were a house of item and have been since. The Kirov attacks in the 1940s in Russia for example likely wouldn’t have taken place if the government hadn’t seized the guns or conscripted the men from the town.

Possibly because Eurasian wolves have been around so many more peoples with written histories for so much longer. The amount of people who live near American wolves today is very low relative to our total population but in Eastern Europe it’s a lot higher

The artwork you selected couldn't have been any better! Btw, I know of a couple of early American wolf attacks very similar to this, and, like this story, I have the newspaper reports and documentation to back it up. I could share it with you if you'd like. It's also possible that you may have already covered one or both stories!

Wolves killed 118 people!? That's hard to believe tbh

It is hard to believe. Add on top that the story gives no names of the deceased or that wolves don’t tend to be in massive packs. Or that in Russian Folklore there are several versions of a very similar story. I hope to have the follow-up out by Saturday but we agree that the odds of this actually happening are at best, low.

@@kuwaitisnotadeployment1373 as someone who has also fought off pitbulls, wolves are not even the same ballpark. It would take four Pitts to one large wolf easy. Pack does seem huge though.

@@Timer-Diegon1111 yeah I don't doubt the capability it's just the actual fact of the matter. I'm not sure where you're from but I live in the United States and we have 4 of the top five largest subspecies of gray wolves and in our entire documented history in this country including Alaska and I'll throw in Canada for the sake of my argument there have been exactly 2 fatal wolf attacks on humans and less than 2 dozen attacks period and exactly 0 cases where a HEALTHY wolf fatally attacked a man! The countries where there have been a suspiciously high number of attacks on humans are in rural unmodernized countries or parts of countries that are rural and have a big problem with wolves and livestock farms where men have long had a hate hate relationship with wolves and are quick to find or invent reasons to eradicate them. All that said and I'm supposed to believe a entire bridal party was eaten by a "super pack" of wolves over 30 times the size of what's already considered amlarge pack?!? Dude if you believe that I have some ocean front property and citizenship cards here in Missouri that I'd like to sell you. It just plan and simple didn't happen. Now that being said there have been credible official accounts of large packs attacking livestock and horses in modern times during unusually long harsh winters and cases from ages past of wolves attacking and killing humans but no where near on the scale reported here and some of those stories even go into the fantasy realm of calling in werewolf hunters and other ridiculous things like that but bro this story however interesting and well laid out isn't true. I'm not doubting the video creator with putting in any false information knowingly but the research was based solely on old newspaper clippings, second hand witness testimony, and other herseay and when put together is a great story and with the way humans have grown up taught to fear wolves it's easy to consume and believe right off the bat but when you actually sit back and think critically about it and do a little research yourself and read from non biased sources you will quickly come to realize this didn't happen, couldn't happen and never will happen. As far as a pitbull vs a wolf in a one on one fight I'd have to see the exact wolf and exact pitbull that were going to fight before I picked. You're average pitbull is a harmless baby that are spoiled and might love you to death but poses no threat to anything. A butterfly landed on mine the other day and she was so terrified she wouldn't go back outside without me for the next 2 days. That said unfortunately there cowards in this world that breed some to be born fight breed fight kill and die and there's some 120 lb pitbulls out there tha would rip a wolves throat out in a one on one fight. Wolves on the other hand are wild animals and smart wild animals that wouldn't put themselves in a position were they had to fight something unless they definitely had the upper hand or rabies or where starving and although the average wolf is larger than 99% of their dog cousins that doesn't always equate to winning a fight but yeah a male gray wolf is going to beat 95% of dogs if put in a position were they can't do anything else but fight it's not a sure thing. I should have separated this inti two different comments because it's apples and oranges really but.....

My grandma and my family are from Lithuania.. I can remember her telling me stories about them in a sleigh.🛷 Being chased by wolves.. and having to take their clothes off to... throw on the ground to slow the wolves down🐺. to get away.

Its funny you bring that up. I have been working on a follow up to this episode and there are a lot of folktales like this out of Russia. There was a report done in the 1980s (linked below) that tells a lot of stories very similar. My thoughts, were that in general the stories are probably not true. But then again there are eerie reports from the 2000s, especially in Siberia, of wolves chasing kids walking to school. Check. Out the article. I would be very curious if any of the folktales mentioned line up with the stories from your grandma. You know what “Dave,” I don’t need bots questioning the good work of the New York Times. Those journalists from 110 years ago would never lie to the American public. Even if you are real, you sound like the kind of guy that would wear DC shirts to every casual event.

Most likely accurate and true if there are 200 wolves they can easily kill 120 people. What if it was 300 wolves? They would easily be able to kill every person the horses got spooked and failed to gallop away at full speed. The people in the sleds were dinner for the wolves.
