The cop in today's movie is here to protect...and sever. That's right, we're covering William Lustig's Maniac Cop in today's installment of Sick Flicks!
Released in 1988, Maniac Cop features an all star cast (Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree, and Robert Z'Dar for starters), cult film cameos (Sam Raimi and Danny Hicks), and one murderous killer cop.
Can Officer Matt Cordell use enough excessive force to earn the coveted 5 barf bag rating? We'll find out in today's video!

I was hyped about this film when Fangoria announced it in march of 1988, but don't recall it ever playing in Canada(it did only get a limited run of 50 screens) and finally watched it VHS in 1994. I do like the film (maniac cop 2 is pretty good too while the third being forgettable)and have watched it a few times a year for the nostalgia. It's a fun B movie and love the cameos and cast. It is nice that while Lustig's directing career is basically over he manages to remain extremely relevant to film fans through his involvement with Blue Underground.

I'll always have a soft spot for this movie. One, because Bruce Campbell and Tom Atkins are two of my favorite actors, and two because it was one of the first slasher films my Dad showed me as kid. I personally find something very appealing about this movie beyond the cast though a movie with the likes of Bruce Campbell, Richard Roundtree, Sheree North, Robert Z’Dar, and Tom Atkins is very unusual. It’s short on gore, but the premise and execution is much better than it should be. It’s strangely intelligent in my opinion despite the car chase at the end.

Gods, I remember watching this with my brother when it was first released. Question for my fellow old folks out there: which makes you feel older, hearing the references and laughing because you would have made them or remembering those movies when they were new?
@TheHorrorGeek

So, personal experience...the thing that always makes me feel old (and occasionally depresses me) when making these videos is remembering that I saw these films when they were new. I remember where I saw them, what was going on in my life...all that stuff. It's sort of bittersweet. The depressing part is always making them and finding interviews or b-roll with directors and actors who are now dead. Like watching interviews with Fulci or Romero or Joe D'Amato always makes me sad because you realize you love these filmmakers and there's never going to be a new movie from them. It's funny you bring this up because I was literally thinking about it yesterday.

@@TheHorrorGeek I feel the same way, Brother. Worse yet is some many of my friends and coworkers are younger than me and when I talk about these films and the legends who made/ starred in them I get the “Who?” Or “What?” Response. This is one of the few times I feel saying “Things were better back in my day” is appropriate.

It's easy to feel a little depressed when you look back and feel nostalgia, but I try to remind myself how good I really had it compared to todays youth. Born in 1971, I was lucky enough to see movies like Star Wars and The Thing in the theater. Raised on KISS, Dukes of Hazzard and Evel Kneivel, I got to witness drive-in movies before they died, and the birth of video rental stores and video arcades. It was a glorious time to be alive.

This is a silly but fun sorta-slasher. Larry Cohan script, William Lustig direction, great cast. The second one is good too, maybe even better, but the third one goes a bit too far into unbelievable territory. It's a good concept because it takes a protective figure and turns him into the monster. That kind of rips your sense of safety out from under you. It seems like this series is somewhat forgotten now, which is a shame. I could see a reboot, if you can find anyone with a big enough jaw to fill the role!

I'm surprised that Sam Raimi never executive-produced a series with Tom Atkins, Bruce Campbell and Richard Roundtree - hell, it would have been one of those series I would have watched as a kid alongside HERCULES and XENA! And boy, as far as the late Larry Cohen is concerned, his onscreen regular James Dixon is also present and it's the second time he included a St. Patrick's Day parade in the plot (first time being GOD TOLD ME TO).
