Wes Craven's first attempt at a meta movie and it worked out pretty good. This is one of my favorite Nightmare movies but it's also interesting as a prototype for what would eventually become Scream.

Such a wickedly brilliant film. The entire Langenkamp trilogy are the best of the best and depending on the mood anyone of the three are easily my favorite. Such a shame that more people didn’t see this upon its release. I was smart enough to see it in theaters in 94 as a teenager.

The younger nurse is Wes Craven's daughter. She and her friends are why Johnny Depp got the role of Glenn. Lin Shaye is the sister of producer Bob Shaye, and you see her in a lot of small New Line Cinema roles. There are a few others in the funeral crowd from other movies. One of them is Tuesday Knight, the one who played Kristen in part 4.

Wes Craven got the rights back thank to 1976 copyrights act , after it was 35 years , when first nightmare was done . Victor Miller now also owns the rights to Friday 13th , but not Jason thats studio property , Jason was not in the original movie . In December 2021 Clive Barker finally gets the rights back for Hellraiser , characters in it will belong to him , in USA , international rights are still big question . No studio will do a movie that is illegal to show in USA , so no new Nightmare on elm street , Friday 13th or Hellraiser movies without permission .

I have always loved this movie. It's telling that this was Craven's last film before "Scream", before he decided to take meta-horror in a more satiric direction instead of this brilliant myth about storytelling. My favorite bit is how the demon/Freddy waits inside the bed sheet until Heather fully commits to playing her part, when she chooses to "be" Nancy and calls John "daddy". My GF and I at the time half crawled out of our seats in the theater for the shot when he opens the glove into frame.

This one was so chilling to me when I was younger. I distinctively remember watching this upstairs at my cousins house. It was the 3 of us watching in the dark on and old box tv lol. The Julie scene came on and when he said “ever play skin the cat” and then started to drag her we all looked at each other and ran to go outside of the house screaming. My eldest cousin ran out first leaving us behind and I swore as I looked behind me down the long dark hallway as we frantically tried to open the door, I saw Freddy approaching us arms stretched out like in the original. Lmao it was the scariest thing I had experienced and took years for me to revisit the movie.

I always thought that even though Heather was awake, Wes was finishing the nightmare. So he's asleep, she's awake, but the demon's influence is causing the nightmare to become reality so her waking world and his nightmare become the same. That's why she has to adhere to the nightmare and become Nancy. Since Freddy is now real and Nancy was the only one to stop him, Nancy must become real to stop him. I always liked how cerebreal this one got.

I can see where Wes came from when he did this one, as far as bringing Freddy back into his "roots" by making Freddy darker and scary like they did in the 1st one kinda. But in my opinion, if I had to guess why this one didn't do that good in box office, not even higher than Freddy's Dead as people was so quick to call out that, its because a lot of people actually enjoyed "Entertaining Freddy" where he's funny, sadistic, and scary all into one and when this one came out, it wasn't what fans were expecting by "We wanted Freddy back" as they said in this movie. Because one thing, I felt Wes didn't understand (God rest his soul) due to him having a problem with the previous one was the fact that Freddy's popularity did indeed grow by him having a sick sense of humor, which was shocking because that's exactly what Freddy have had the whole time, since the first one, that comedic side. But this one didn't really focus on that, I felt like they were trying to hard to rely on the "terrifying" side of him. Don't get me wrong, I loved this one as well, I love all the originals but out of the series, I would say that this is my least favorite. Mostly because to me, they went against what Freddy was about, by having that spark of entertainment. Me personally, I like "Entertaining Sadistic Freddy" than just plain "Dark Freddy" to me that's what made him different from Jason, Michael Myers, & Leatherface and better. That's why I didn't like the remake, that and it wasn't Robert Englund. Lastly, great reaction! Always love seeing Mrs. Movies with that horrifying and disgusting look on her face when it comes to Freddy lol. She actually reacted differently than I thought. Also fun fact: Johnny Depp was orginally suggested to be one of the cast in the funeral scene. But the casting director or producers didn't call him because they didn't think he was going to do it. Johnny Depp heard about that and he said he would have been there without hesitation, if they did asked him. They mentioned that in the Never Sleep Again Documentary.

Saw this opening night when it came out. Really liked it. Though it was the perfect ending for Freddy. This was a really good precursor to Scream. Ranks in the top 3 for me (1, 3, and then this)

This one is up there with my favorites in the series. I like that the was a mother as this movie was made for the same adults (who have kids at this point) who were teenagers when the original came out. It also plays with the themes of darkness vs light and how Freddy wants to snuff out childhood innocence. The graveyard scene had many notable faces from the original minus one… Johnny Depp. Wes Craven did want him for the scene but felt at that time Depp was way too popular and probably wouldn’t want to do a cameo. After the movie came out though he ran into Depp who was hurt he wasn’t offered the chance and said he would have loved to be in the scene. I love the Meta nature of the film, all the characters playing themselves, the fact that heather’s husband in the film was a special effects artist (her real husband was as well) and playing with the idea that inspired the film… Freddy had become a pop culture icon and celebrated like at the talk show scene. That last one was why Craven did this film, he felt Freddy was no longer scary and there was no way to “fix” the old character so he created this version. Another aspect of the film I enjoyed was the Grim fairy tale running plot point and how the doctor questioned heathers parenting ability because she was in horror and her kid may have been exposed to it. It was making a parallel that horror movies can (and in the case of Wes’s Nightmare films) serve the same role as Grim’a fairy tales. That the story of the “boogie man” etc is as old as time (or this incarnation of Freddy) and that kids are exposed to it in part for entertainment, in part to impart a moral message etc. That by not doing it they lack the experience and even coping mechanisms when faced with real danger and real evil.

To be fair, I don't see why Wes wouldn't have asked Johnny Depp to be in this film. He made a cameo in Freddy's Dead. Even at that point he was a big star having starred in 21 jump street and Edward Scissorhands.

I thought this was very clever. I liked the 'story within a story' angle that this brought out, slightly before 'Scream' if I remember rightly. A big plus for me was that as Heather was my first crush in the 80's, I was delighted to see her return here. Robert, Wes and the entire cast did great jobs in my view.

Lynda Shey played the nurse in this and the teacher in the first, also the sister of Bob Shey the producer Heather was talking to in tbe movie. Shes also famious for the Insidious films. i loved Freddys look in this, i think the ending got a bit "Tom & Jerry", but it was deffinatly a great originial concept.
@GlitchyHalo
@GlitchyHalo Жыл бұрын
I think it was supposed to be like that because the ending was supposed to be a dark Hansel and Gretel (the sleeping pills as breadcrumbs and Dylan pushing Freddy into the furnace like Gretel pushing the witch into the oven) which is why Dylan loves that story so much

@@YouMeTheMovies yeah, I never got that either, but he thought Johnny Depp was too big of a star and would refuse. I think Wes didn't pay much attention to the films after the third. As far as he was concerned the story was finished after the original. Yes, he wrote a script for the third, but they used only part of his story. So, he may have not realized Johnny Depp was in Freddy's Dead.

While most people don't consider New Nightmare part of the series, it seems like Robert Englund does when he brings up the movie. He felt it too was a proper book end to the series and felt FvJ was the one not canon because it's a hybrid. Fans also believe Freddy isn't actually Freddy but a ancient demon in the form as Freddy, but Englund in interviews always says "Freddy HIMSELF" and not "a demon pretending to be Freddy." Even Wes once said it wasn't his intentions to make it sound like he's a imposter Freddy but more like this was his official backstory. (This is mainly because he didn't watch Freddy's Dead all the way which explained his origins.) So I think New Nightmare retcons Freddy's Dead and says THIS is Freddy's true story.
@GlitchyHalo
@GlitchyHalo Жыл бұрын
I felt as if FvJ was still canon in a way and Freddy went to hell no matter how he died whether it was Freddy’s Dead or New Nightmare and that some slashers just take place in the same universe Freddy was in Ohio and Jason was in New Jersey so it was possible

In the commentary track, Wes Craven said he didn't ask Johnny Depp to be in the movie because he didn't think he would be interested since he just became a big star. After the movie was made, Johnny Depp ran into Wes craven and asked why he wasn't written in the movie and he would have loved to have been in it.
