Great film mate, well jealous of your bookcase. Sadly I fear the British pub as we all knew it is almost non existent. A lot now are gastro pubs with similarly high prices. I miss the old spit and sawdust pubs. Good to see a lot in the book are still open, I think it's worse in some areas compared to others.

That was great Steve and a really good idea. Growing up I had 2 local pubs that basically I went to every day as it was part of the social scene of the 80’s and 90’s. Both of them are closed and boarded up and have been for years. There’s a massive housing estate there and not 1 single pub 🤷🏻♂️

Very interesting Steve, I was visiting village pubs with the Leicester footpath association as they start and finish their walks from them which I’m sure helps as they do walks 4 days a week but not been out with them lately. It is sad a a bit embarrassing when you visit a pub and they are struggling and maybe your pints not very good. The pub in the lovely village of Grimston recently went through a community buy out which is great, have you been to the community pub in Bamford yet that’s really good. On my last walk I visited 3 community shops in 4 days so also good. I think not every pub can survive things have changed a lot which has also led to the new ale bars which in Leicestershire we have a lot of them mostly all new ventures and not in the old pubs. One village pub locally a free house sells only a local small local breweries beer and like others I visit it maybe on the motorbikes with others because the beer is fantastic. All in all the quality of beer has improved massively in the last 10 years so we are very lucky. In fact we are spoilt for good choice around here Steve. Cheers 🍻

If by Great British Pubs you mean pubs tied to breweries, screwing them in addition to the onerous pressure of customs and excise, then yeah… they’re probably disappearing. If you take it to mean privately owned premises, brewing on site, give the pub-goer what they want, I think they’re opening up everywhere and often thriving.
@atrampinthehills.84122 сағат бұрын
Thanks Kevin...being a country boy from Suffolk in the 70's and 80's these were the days when pubs were thriving...there are lots of little successes these days with micro breweries poping up, but on the whole a dying trade..but i guess some pubs will have a great weekend thanks to the footie
@kevinbush430019 сағат бұрын
Yep, as you say… a dying trade. But honestly, this only dawned on me recently: dying not because people don’t want somewhere nice to meet their friends or take their family; but dying because breweries that are generally Plc’s want to make more and more money for their shareholders. Of course the Treasury want their cut as well. We can blame recent trends, eg credit crunches, recessions, smoking bans, pandemic lockdowns, but realistically it’s been a long, gradual decline. A hundred years ago, most pubs would have been privately-owned, the publican would’ve brewed and sold his own ale, perhaps sold/swapped some with other pubs locally, and was happen to earn a living that way. Might have even lived on the premises with his or her (okay, generally his) family. Nowadays leisure is industry first and foremost; the hospitality comes second, if the punter is lucky. Sad that some beautiful buildings with interesting histories and convivial atmospheres have been lost to other uses… but the pub has evolved; I know of bars in old garages and in storage units on car parks and one that doubles as a pizza restaurant (kind of Italian tapas).

Sadly the real price of serving a pint in a pub is £10. The only way to keep on going is to do “extras”. Glad you’re looking into this, it’s a British tradition that has been around for centuries, can it really be vanishing now, under our watch? Yeah all shut here sadly. Mostly under the Tories and there budget cuts to policing and late night licences. Nice to see so many open on yours mind, think country pubs are doing better given the affluence of the areas they are located in. The middle class areas are always going to dig their expensive pocket heels in harder. The front line, our towns, cities and cheap resorts are all failing on there bottoms. Well at least we can expect a lot of these pubs will be new housing dwellings in the upcoming years. Thats a great percentage still open Steven, what a lovely affluent, supporting area. I cant imagine growing up without this rite of passage going into the pub, it’s unheard of now (part of the problem) Spot on video mate and a very important topic that needs highlighting more, we are loosing our heritage, pubs are our life blood.

Thanks folks..really enjoyed reading your comment..seeing peoples comment makes me think we are lucky here to have so many pubs still doing ok...the big town pubs will be raking it in this weekend with the football but the small country pubs are being hit hard....youngsters don't seem to go out drinking now like they used to in my day...we used to go out most nights even if we only had a tenner..i think it is the older punters keeping lots of pubs going...

@@atrampinthehills.841the whole dating, socialising thing is lost on younger generations. There is an app for everything. If you wanted to find a girlfriend or meet up with your mates it was all done down the pub. Now it’s all tinder and Netflix! I feel sorry for the younger generations. Interesting video, Stephen. It's good to see it's not all doom and gloom, and there are plenty of pubs still open. Now we're down to 1 pub and 3 clubs.

Interesting Project Steven...just in our little area in Fairfield in Buxton we had Four and they have gone and all within a square mile, and Buxton has had even more closures...The reason they are shutting is the price of the drinks...Nobody can afford to visit the local two or three times a week anymore like they used to and I also think all day drinking hours helped to raise prices to cover overheads...The good old local where they used to call time at 10.30 are all gone because people just can't afford it anymore...The only places that seem to do well are the mass market ones like Wetherspoons with totally zero atmosphere...I do miss those nights when someone used to play the piano and we all joined in a good old sing song...Cheers Les.🙂👍
