Thought the board might want to hear a real world example from start to finish. I finally got my son's 2014 back today - Total duration: 5 months & 7 days! The small to mid-sized country dealership was great to keep us informed & was very transparent (especially about their frustration with overseas parts reliance) they had 2 on the lot prior, needing the same repair (in which the car owner's took out their verbal frustrations on them... A bad move IMHO - as they seemed very weary with their hands tied etc). The parts/service/maintenance dept. all said there was no way for them to see in their systems any availability on the TCM & it would just come in when available (which in their best guess /estimation & word from other dealerships in NC) was anywhere from 2-5 months. I made sure to stay on top of it calling them once every month or so... just to kindly make sure i didn't fall in the cracks. Best of luck & prayers to all those struggling with transportation issues regarding the ford TCM fiasco'.

Hey Joshua, thanks for the time and effort to post your experience! I went through the whole "extended warranty" scenario with my 2012 turd focus which is simply Ford's way of avoiding a recall for a product they knew would fail. The DPS6 transmission has been a nightmare for myself and so many others. My car sat at the Jones Ford dealership in South Carolina for 3 months before finally getting replaced at the end of September 2021. I mention this because, while sitting for so long, most dealerships will not take care of the car in any way, shape or form so it's something else to consider. They let my brand new battery die completely which substantially weakened and diminished the battery's performance and lifespan and it came back to me with a busted antennae, a few extra scratches and dings. The transmission showed signs of performance deterioration within the first week after getting it back with a new TCM. Not turning the engine when turning the key, robotic kerchunking noises under the hood before being able to start the engine, starting off in second gear when it would engage, overheating dash alert when it shouldn't be overheating, failing to operate at all while commuting in traffic, etc, etc... AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE. I used to be a ford guy but, now knowing the corporate greed that led to this debacle of a decision that literally puts peoples lives at risk has without a doubt changed my opinion of ford and will most likely never purchase another at risk of supporting such large scale corporate deception, greed and inconsideration. Ford must hate it's customers.

I read what yours was doing and mine is doing the same thing. It starts in 2nd,makes robot sounds and shift noises like a stick shift trans when you switch gears,and I get a overheating warning on the info center on the dash.the Ford dealership scaned it and the scan said it was the number A (top one)shift solenoid was faulty. So I replaced that and it's still same thing. What part did you have to replace ?

My daughter's 2016 Focus lost reverse and had issues with drive but would still go. Researched these and found out the transmissions had been made by an European company and had lots of problems. Lawsuits also. It had codes showing clutchs ( two dry clutches) were stuck. Found a video showing where the 2 modules were located. He showed how to remove , clean and lubricate . I have a lift so the bottom one was easy as was the top . To my amazement it fixed it . About a month later same issues. Here I go again.

Update: 9 days ago the dealership called saying that Ford approved the use af a Dorman aftermarket TCM and my Focus was good to go. I picked it up and it ran great for about 60 miles. It started slipping out of gear and " TRANSMISSION MALFUNCTION " popped up on the dash. It would not go into manual mode. I made it back to the dealership and left it with them. As of today they still have no idea of what is wrong. I feel like it is still the TCM but they do not agree. They reprogrammed it and said it is better but now he tells me the traction control is flashing. All different symptoms than when I took the car to them in January.

But if I start using the manual shifter it acts up.

Thanks for your video! I bought a ‘14 Focus for my teenage daughter to get to/from work and college and now it’s not working. I’ve had a new battery put in thinking it could be the problem but a month later it still won’t turn on! My question is how can I determine if it’s the TCM without paying the crazy dealership prices? I have found several junk yards with 2012-16 Focuses but how will I know if they have a TCM inside and what if the one inside the junkyard car is already bad too? Any advice is appreciated!

First off thanks for posting this video! You've given me some hope. So all they had to do was reflash the computer and use your vin to plug in the right programming for the vehicle to work correctly? I've seen some options where vendors are selling preprogrammed tcms if you provide your vin number to them. At first I thought it was a scam, but this video has given me some hope if they have access to the Ford software as well. I'm mechanically inclined enough to do the part swap. I'm just worried I'll have to pay for a tow to the dealership to pay them to program the part if that is not the case.

my focus 61,089 miles barley out of warranty was sitting at a dealership in the corner with 50 other ones for 6 months . I would love to see the ford bulletin on this issues as to what they were told to tell customers . I had the car towed back to my house and tested the clutch forks which are fine . I told the dealer this TCM was the problem and they even cover it under an emissions warranty . The process for them to get to the TCM being the actual problem is a fkn nightmare thou . like I said I am buying a programed one off eBay and installing myself . they did offer to replace the whole transmission for only $9,000 thou . How nice

Be careful doing this. I had one go out and it was replaced under warranty. The new one went out about 15k miles later. I pulled one out of a junkyard car and it lasted about 5k miles. Ordered a “preprogrammed” TCM from EBay, shipped from China and it took about a month or so to arrive. It didn’t work. It wasn’t “pre-programmed” and not only that, but it couldn’t be flashed because the TCM wasn’t even registering that it was installed. I had a guy come out last week to bring his program to do the programming (worked for ford replacing thousands of these) and he said nothing would work. He was out there for an hour trying to get it to work. He said it happens with the eBay TCMs and that you’re really taking a gamble. I’m out $470. I just purchased a remanufactured TCM from a reputable site (Jeg) Dorman brand, and I also purchased the two year warranty, all together being $800 in change. Should be here by the end of this month. Crossing my fingers.

I got lucky and found one at a junkyard. Put it in, took maybe 30 mins or so, and the first 30 mins or so it drove really, really weird. However, the car eventually smoothed out from the learning procedure (just by driving), and it lasted maybe 5k mikes or so. I bought one from eBay , claimed to be “pre-programmed”, however it didn’t work. Scan tool wouldn’t even register that there was a TCM in there. Bought one from Jeg (Dorman brand) , very very reputable parts, and I purchased a two year warranty. $650 and it should be here by the end of the month. The car is going up for sale the day I get it running.

I replaced about the date of this video being posted my 2014 Focus (bought used in July 2016 with 19K on it), trading it in on a new Mazda CX-30 due to the massive backlog of the TCM (about the same # you give in the video) at the dealership shop. The actions of the transmission to me were too annoying and dangerous, fearing a ill timed breakdown. As as result of the bad TCM my trade-in value was several $1K's less that I hoped for. Still it was cheaper to take that loss.The new Mazda has a true automatic and seems to have no historical issues with it.

@garreth629
@garreth629 Жыл бұрын
I suspect the tcm shortage isn't necessarily fords fault. It's a computer for the transmission and there's been a chip shortage do to covid that chip manufacturers are only just starting to catch up on. I would venture to guess chip makers are more interested in making chips for computers and other electronics first then they are in making a computer for a car that's no longer being manufactured. Ford may have little say in the production of replacement parts. It's probably get in line with everyone else to wait for the chips they need. Ford doesn't necessarily make all there own parts. There's lots of subcontractors making individual car parts. I ran into a similar problem trying to sorce a tcm for a focus. I later found out my problem was the input shaft leaking oil on the clutchs but atleast I got a backup tcm should it go out.

I had the same problem, plugged in my blue driver and brought up the same codes. All I did was disconnect the battery let it sit overnight. Let the TCM totally reset and drain the charge in it. The next day and for about 8 months so far the car has been running fine with the exception of the standard shutter they all get. I drive my 2014 ford focus all over the country and use it as a tow vehicle while I deliver trucks to various locations. I did change out both actuators out shortly after i had the problem. Im thinking when it gets hot out it might act up again. when it acted up before I was down in Florida last summer when it was like almost 100 out. extreme heat can make eloctronics act up.

My local ford dealership has had 4 focuses sitting and waiting for i think a year now. They prob can be fixed the same way.

Very cool, resourceful fix! But that replacement TCM was on an old, used car, so when will it die? 3 months, 1 year from now? I hope it lasts you another 80-100k. But it seems like the safest, long-term bet is getting a new (ideally OEM) TCM.

Yup, Car has been at the dealer for almost 6 months now waiting on the backorder TCM It's covered under warranty so I let it sit there but enough is enough they claim they can't get the part yet I can go online and get it? hmmm, I and they say 40 other people are waiting. It's at Les Stumpf Ford In Appleton WI. I am about to give up and get it home as they have it sitting on the gravel outside ruining it. About to bring it home and try to do it myself, At least I can get it in the garage and out of the elements for now. 2013 ford focus 60,890 miles on the car.

Following up I removed my car from the dealer, I was able to find a part online and install it myself. After the installation, the car worked perfectly but just to be safe I took the car to a competing dealership to have the TCM relearn done and they did it for free. I should say Bergstrom Ford Neenah, they were very nice about all of this after hearing what the other place pulled. Here is the shocker in all this, They told me Ford has told them to order this part off Amazon or wherever they can source it, They have sent out a total of 3500 units to be spread to all the dealers in the country. So if you're sitting there waiting for yours to be done, don't, Just get one offline and make sure the plug is the same on the new one. They told me some of the ones they did buy on Amazon the pinout was wrong so beware of what one you buy. In my case, The Bergstrom dealership helped me out after the other dealership wasted 7 months of my time and caused damage to the car sitting in poor conditions behind their dealership. Bergstroms offered to buy the car from me as well at full Kelly bluebook cost so I will be selling it to them. Case closed good luck to the rest of ya.

@@teelivingforchrist2855 What I did was research the different versions of the updates and who made them, I then went on Ebay and looked up ones for cars of the same year and spec initially then narrowed that down to build date to narrow the field for any software variations throughout the production of the car, and landed on a car that was hit in the ass end that was being parted out, I then contacted the yard and asked them to pull the TCM and send me a pic of the label and it was a car that had the recall done so I purchased it. Being it was of the same year and build month everything program wise was the same and it was a plug and play installation at that point I took it to the dealer just in case to do the relearn and it did not even need it they said and charged me nothing for the few minutes they spent on it and as a bonus, they offered to buy the car form me at that point so I sold it to them. So moral of story, look for a wrecked car being parted out not just the unit as if it was in a wreck, it was more than likely a running driving car. then make sure it's within a close time to the build date of yours and unless you are at a software or TCM variation update point in production your prob going to get lucky too.

Via local Ford dealer: After diagnosing a bad TCM they ordered an aftermarket one approved under the Ford 10 yr 100k mile warrantee. So far, a one week wait for the install. The car is 9 years old 70k miles 2014 car. We can still drive local, but after driving a while in warm weather it over revs then grabs too high a gear while accelerating and going up hills. I hope the new unit is better and last longer. I do not know what wears out internally. Originally it was the actuator but while replacing that the TCM code shows up. So, the old actuator was put back. The actuator is not under warrantee. In my opinion, there are so many complexities to these cars that only a good dealer can fix it with decent efficiency.

Well those trouble codes indicates accutuators which are two transmission electric motors one under transmission close to the bottom of TCM and the other uper close to to the top of the TCM under the cooling radiator hose, but controled both directelly by TCM itself, because their wiring harnesses are attached directelly to the TCM, so those trouble codes mean acctuator, or TCM or both, but you were lucky in your case it was just TCM only, and and you did the right choice by changing TCM, programe it and everything goes right. TURN CAR ON (NOT IGNITION) 6. WAIT 15 SECONDS 7. TURN CAR OFF 8. TURN CAR ON 9. SHIFT TO NEUTRAL 10. MESSAGE "TRANSMISSION READY" 11. THAT'S IT I have an automatic transmission by the way. Not sure if this is the same method for a manual

Even though P0700 code is triggered, Ford dealership claimed that the TCM warranty doesn't cover P287B. In other words, no correlation. Agree or disagree?

By chance did you find out that your original one could have been reflashed as well and you may not have had to replace it? I'm hoping I can just reflash mine.

The question is, if a firmware update would be the 'fix', what was the cause? Not likely that a defective module could be 'fixed' with a re-flash.

Once they fry they fry. Even with a brand new replacement it's just a matter of time before it happens again. Ford prob wont ever resolve the issue at this point.

Bro next problem will be the dual clutch and FYI Ford has a recall on the TCM for 2012-2018 Ford Focus but of course they don’t tell you that until you press them on it also Ford sent the dealerships a bulletin on the dual clutch to replace at no charge that has expired and they never told me about when I took it in for gear slippage. My car has been sitting for 1 year when I called about the TCM I asked about the dual clutch and that’s when I was told about the bulletin ford sent out. Of course I have to pay Ford a ridiculous amount to replace a part they knew has been faulty. Hope you have better luck with your focus

Jack the car up and slide underneath. It’s four bolts if I remember correctly. You’ll see it without an issue. It took maybe five mins to take off and put new one on. It’s a really, really simple job. The gears might need to be turned by hand in case it doesn’t fit in the right way on the first time, but it’s simple. Hardest part was getting those damn clips off to be honest. Pieces of shit.

I'm getting 5-10X warning each day from my 2012 Focus saying "Hill Start Assist not available" and my mechanic scanned car computer which showed both speed sensor & control module have issues. I'll replace $20 speed sensor 1st & hope it fixes my issue but if not, I'll head to junk yard bc this is $500+ part new & $350 used on ebay but no way I'm giving my mechanic $1500 to fix this
