In our quest to find the best sub-$100 CPU, we recently re-encountered the Intel i3-10100 and 10100F gaming CPUs. Back in 2020, these were in fierce competition vs. AMD, but now, their biggest competitors are Intel's own i3-12100 and 12100F. The recent price reductions have the 10100 series down closer to $78-$80 for the non-IGP variant (the 10100F), whereas the 12100F is currently $107. That might make the 10100F a good option for people building truly limited budget gaming PCs -- but let's benchmark them and find out.

I would like you to test a compressor type CPU cooling device that uses gas refrigerant like a freezer in a fridge rather than water cooling. I do know if such a device even exists but that kind of cooling in a all in one CPU cooler has got to be better than the water. I have seen 12 volt compressors for trucks air con. Thanks.

The universal king of budget PC, probably the most beloved CPU in EU in last 3 years. ( ...and, as Steve from HWunboxed showed us, is pretty close to 5600 in games. Especialy while paired with budget GPU - RX6600XT - which is also the king of budget FPS / $ chart )

**EDIT 2: Ok, after digging a lot, it appears that B560s from ASUS, MSI, & ASRock all support XMP profiles over 2666 for the 10th gen i3. I've found builds working with Gigabyte Aorus branded B560s as well, and a user in the thread below claims support for the B560M H board as well. So it seems all B560 from these AIBs support XMP over 2666 for the 10th gen i3 CPUs. FYI - All this is pertinent to an upcoming Episode of Boost My Build I filmed yesterday so just wanted to make sure my info was correct.** OP: My understanding is that at least some B560 boards will allow XMP profiles above 2666 MT for i3 10100. And I also believe even those boards that won't work with the XMP you can manually input the settings from the XMP profile and that should work. Here's a ASRock B560M HDV working with 3600 MT timings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qM91mZyK2bacqWQ.html Here's a MSI B560M Bazooka XMP working with 10105F: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gLuTnsyTsqytdmg.html Unfortunately I don't currently have a 10100 for any testing to reverify and it's been a long time. EDIT: A little digging and it seems that MSI, ASRock, & ASUS B560 work with 10th gen i3 XMP over 2666. Seems so far only gigabyte B560 boards have exclusions for the 10th gen i3 parts in the memory specs, but could be undocumented support as well. But check the motherboard specs to be sure.

@@MrSkollll Thanks, their specs only list OC speeds specifically for i5/i7/i9 CPUs and exclude the i3. But I also found evidence that the Aorus branded Gigabyte B560's work with XMP here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/iJOPoZt807bVoX0.html . However the one I'm really interested in is the DS3H, since that one is $60. It lists the same memory spec as the Aorus Pro B560. I'm guessing if the even more cut down H board allows XMP above 2666 then certainly the DS3H should.

10100f + b460 motherboard.... See a 10600k or 10700k at a good price.... Oh I have to buy a z series board to use it properly. Or 10100f with z 490 motherboard.... Oh look a cheap 10700k etc.... It’s worth noting that the 10100f can be had for around $65 USD now, that’s what I paid. Compared to the $108 12100f, that’s a 40% increase in cost for a 20-40% increase in performance, further making the case that while the 12100f is the best value, a $40 price difference can pay for you PSU, or allow you to get a better GPU. 10100F is the ultra budget king right now.

not to mention you can also economize in cheaper motherboards, because DAMN, those 12th gen intel motherboards are much more expensive, and there are much more quantity of motherboard that supports 10th gen nowadays, so not only you'll get 40$ more for the processor difference, who knows, you might get like 20-30$ from the motherboard too

I built a PC in January with a 10100F and it's been great. I see it as a "good enough" threshold. So far it's held 60+fps in every game we've tried, and 60fps is good enough for a great gaming experience. Going from 60fps to anything higher is a very small improvement to the experience, so there's really not much reason to pay any amount extra for it. I'd do it again in a heartbeat if I were to build that PC again.

@@nickcastor1583 When I first built it I had it paired with an RX 6600, which is really close to a 3060. For 1080p I think it's a pretty balanced build. At 1440p the GPU was definitely the bottleneck. Now I've got a 3080 in there that lets me play at 4k. Seems silly to have a 3080 with a i3, but in most newer games the i3 still isn't bottlenecking too much at the higher resolution. Again, it can push out 60+fps, which is kind of the threshold for a good experience.

from 60fps to above is a small imrpovement to the experience, AND is a huge downside for your wallet, like, i dont get why people are this obsessed to get 60FPS+ in games that aren't competitive (or where it doesn't matter that much), i was rocking with my 24fps playing zelda BOTW the first time i completed it, and it was a GOOD experience, i enjoyed every bit of that game, i didnt needed 144fps average to enjoy it, so thats why im staying with this entry level i3, and im buying a rx 550 so i can at least enjoy some new titles at 30fps. and believe me, that IS huge improvement, believe it or not i was having fun in playing spiderman at bare minimum with 800x600 resolution at 10-20fps, i even advanced in story, but sadly it is quite unplayable, i need to get at least 20-30fps in most titles to not have a seizuren lmfao

Great video! After having built a half dozen or so budget type SFF builds for friends and family recently, you can absolutely get a very solid motherboard to pair with the i3-12100F for not too much more than $100 price point. Earlier in the year you had to go with the ASRock H610M-ITX (don't pay more than $120 for this part, ideally $110), but now ASRock has released their B660 ITX part, and it is selling for $120. Normally not an ASRock buyer, but I have been very pleasantly surprised by these mobos. No frills, but they run DDR4 and have integrated wifi which is nice and keep the price down. They are also super easy to quietly cool, making them ideal for SFF builds.

17:33 also, it is not only 20 dollars on the CPU but also the inflated premiums on the 12th gen Motherboards that are around 30$ more than a H510 for example. so in total between cpu and MB there is around a 50$ difference. Thanks for the video, I was planning on building an entry level PC with a 12100f + RX 6600 but I was short on budget and looking at some other benchmarks there is a 10-20 FPS difference in some scenarios with this setup since there is a change from PCIE 40. and 3.0 but that GPU does not suffer that much on PCIE 3.0. so those 50 bucks will really help to buy a 144hz monitor instead of a 75hz one.

problem is X299 cpus has less than skylake in single thread preformance(IPC), and worse power saving features, so even a 9/10th gen skylake based cosnumer platform will typically send them flying for pure gaming benchmarks. Most games dosnt need 8+ cores or gain notthing from that. So lower power more efficient I5 9600/ I7 8700 and 10100/10400 cpus actually would typically make more sence, than to spend much on X299 outside of productivity. You will pay more + more in energy to run it, + get same or often lower preformance out of the X299 stuff than any (older mid-high range skylake desktop parts).

I'll admit to being one of the edge/nut cases that bought the Strix B660-F. I picked up some OEM ddr5 cheap and went for the 12100F mostly for benchmarking but at 5.3Ghz and 6500 Cl30 it's a little beast in games too! They're will also be plenty used 12th gen CPUs to upgrade/bench with soon.

I think the i3-10100f is better deal on a budget than the i3-12100f simply for factoring in overall price in motherboard, RAM and ease of access. It is an amazing CPU when it was released considering it performs nearly as well as the i7-7700. It also shows how long-overdue an increased core count was on the high end. There's less and less reason to go back and buy classic CPUs as strong as Haswell's i7s for a budget system when the i3-10100 exists. It outperforms them all handily while costing not much more, all while being new, even as those parts drop in price.

The reason why this GPU is used is to make sure it's a "pure" CPU test, you can basically scale down with each tier Eg - 80=100 fps 70=80 fps and so on all the way down GPU tiers (example numbers) GPU benchmark can give you %s My 1070 gets around 70-110 fps on games with a 5800x

I appreciate the effort put into catering for low end components in videos. Obviously it makes sense to use high end GPUs here to see the full performance differences in the CPUs, but I think what would also be useful is one or both of: a) a couple of graphs of performance if paired with a price balanced GPU b) linking to a budget build or two with what are reasonably matched components and their performance This would give especially first/second time builders an idea of what they might reasonably expect to see performance wise if they built a balanced system. It's hard to judge from the benchmarks here if all the games used would still be playable, or if the 3080 GPU is propping up the CPU. Again, thanks to the team for providing content which is not only interesting but actually useful in what viewers might actually be purchasing.

Wait the 10th gen is "old"... Guess my 8700k is ancient at this point. Honestly even though I have been in IT for 22 years professionally, and basically all my life otherwise, it still blows my mind how fast tech progresses. I try to build a new PC every 5 to 8 years, with usually a GPU, Memory, and storage upgrade 2 to 4 years into that, depending on how fast the tech is moving. Even at the shorter end of that schedule, it always feels like I build a PC and boom, big leaps happen... But regardless of that, I still love PC's and honestly that constant advancement and growth is what I love (in that bittersweet way) about IT as a whole.

A straight decade of Intel pushing single core performance by 5-10% per generation has done strange things to the PC landscape. Software can't really progress at the speed CPUs are currently progressing because of the absurdly large install base of CPUs which are "practically the same", which all belong to people who got the idea that once you've bought a PC you've bought a PC.... and yes, I'm writing this on my 12 year old coffee-table-laptop.
