If he was upfront about how he felt, he would've saved himself from a world of hurt because Summer would've told him that she wanted a casual relationship from the start. I think he liked her so much he was afraid of rejection so he'd rather put himself into the friendzone. However, Tom being so in love with Summer probably would've agreed to it with the hope that their relationship would become something more, so it's likely that the end result would be the same. I think the lines got blurred for Tom once they started having sex because isn't a romantic relationship esentially a friendship with all the physical aspects thrown in?

It's not all on Summer, but she should have been way more communicative with her intentions. But I think the icing on the cake for why Summer is a total inconsiderate flake is when she invited Tom to her party without even letting him know she was engaged. After the wedding party, the dancing, and her asleep on his shoulder. That was cruel and unusual. Seriously. That was some fucked up shit right there.

Cosmic Space Bub yea from personal experience it’s always a good call to be honest about stuff like this because even if the person you’re interested in doesn’t reciprocate those feelings back to you there can still be a friendship there. It’ll be kind of weird because you did mention that you wanted to be in a relationship, but over time it’ll be fine. Girls can absolutely tell when someone is lying, it’s like a super power. That’s why honesty is integral.

I learned from the last girl. She’s actually good friends with me now but she’s only a friend because I didn’t make the move and it hurt when I thought there was salvation when she still clearly wasn’t interested. She was at first, you could tell. Anyways she’s my friend but now I’m glad it never worked. The next girl, I got her details straight away and chatted to her via text, she invited me out before I was about to so that was all the signs I needed, I then asked if I could take her on a proper date in which she declined. Never seen her since but at least she’s not stringing me along causing headaches or heartaches. It looked to be going that way coz she invited me out again when my friends also invited me out, I said to my friends I might be meeting a girl and they said “bring her” and I didn’t know if I wanted to go back to her after the rejection. I then declined her and went to meet my friends by myself coz I saw exactly were it was going. Sometimes I think she might’ve invited me out again because she regretted rejecting me but I put that down to an expectation. I guess we’ll never know and that’s okay.

What I'm trying to explain ( and it's difficult because I'm french ... ) is that she says clearly she doesn't want to be in love, she want friends not lovers. Tom didn't denied that he like her in any way ! She asks if he like her and he say "yes" ; she asks if he like her as a friend, and he say yes ( but we understand that he hides his true feelings ). Why does she kiss him ? Because she to be friend with him ( she made it clear previously ), ans she want to have more "physical and emotional contact" with him. She want a sexfriend, to say it simply. But yes, you can have a friend with whom you have kisses, no love and no sex. You can have have a friend with whom you have sex. A lover with whom you have no sex ( search asexuality for example ) etc. etc. The difficulty of this relationship is that it is not common. Summer want to be clear and expose her rules, but Tom acting stereotypically and don't understand what she really want and feel for him. And women are even more afraid of it so they get to hide behind certain social norms, for example "men should make the first move" etc. Sometimes you get lucky, my ex girlfriend was planning on telling me she liked me first after I was too insecure to initiate anything physical. Got there eventually though 😂.
