In Part 1, we discovered sand in the intake manifold after this throw-away engine had been dragged to the roadside. Today I'm removing the valves and making an initial clean up. Let's get started

It was happy before that way, ssoo if it goes back together with new gaskets, it will be like a new engine 👍👍

It should be a good engine when put back together. The cylinders looked good.

While you have it open like that, I'd recommend soaking the cylinders/pistons/rings with some Berryman Chemtool to 'free-up' any possible stuck rings that are stuck/sooted in - rotate slowly only breaker-bar not starter. After that (a week or two would be great), change oil and oil-down cylinders before cranking with starter. I'd recommend Rotella T6 (full syn) oil - makes them crank easier, and keeps rings clean and unstuck.

I could not believe how much dirt had gotten down to the valves. Great job cleaning it up and it will be good to see it going back together

This was just an initial cleaning. I plan on having the head assessed by a machine shop and have a Mag-Flux test for cracks done before assembly. I have been looking for a head gasket set and I keep finding Agricultural applications (this was a turbo-charged engine for marine use and it has a different gasket with some blocked ports). I can't believe that the sand got pushed so far into the head...I've never seen this kind of thing before. The overall cylinder condition looks good: there was no ridge at the top of the cylinders that is often evident in high hour engines, etc. I'll have to lap the valves and see if I can get them to seat better...there is some corrosion on the seats.

I believe that with all your experience pumping up flat tires, changing batteries and replacing pulleys that this job is well within your capabilities. This stuff is all the same. It looks difficult until you've done it once or twice, then it becomes easy.Thanks for watching and have a great and restful weekend there in the Chesapeake. How's she goin'? Just catching up. Nice job cleaning up this head and valve train. A lot of dirt build up besides the sand and rocks. Looks like it'll be OK though eh. Did you find any show stoppers? Take care!!!

No problems so far that would keep it from running well again after a cleanup. I plan to clean the head much better and check for it being flat and make sure there are no cracks before reassembly.

Starting to look good Craig! It’s amazing how quickly an engine starts looking new again after a good clean up. Odd question…what does it smell like? Like does it smell of oil or diesel? Thanks Brother!

It smells like dirty oil with a hint of diesel. I ususally wear nitrile gloves to keep this stuff off my hands. When I wash it off I use dish detergent then rub half a lemon over my hands and forearms and leave the lemon juice on for about 5 minutes, them wash it off with hand soap. That really knocks the residual odor off.

Not yet but it has been on my mind. I see head gaskets aplenty for agricultural engines but none for marine head gaskets. They are very similar. The marine engine gasket has several cooling ports blocked off. Not sure why. I may just install the agricultural one and make a note of it.

I really can't understand how all that sand and gravel got so packed into that engine. I think it would have been hard to even do that intentionally. I could see if it sat submerged for a while but then you'd figure everything would have been rusty and your crank case would have been full of water. Just how far did they drag this thing?? I suppose it doesn't bear thinking about too hard but I'm a wackjob like that... I see in your reply to Tractor Boy that you'll be going to a machine shop to have it checked out. Can they pressure test the block and head? Also if the block and head sealing surfaces are true would be good to know. If the surfaces are true and it holds pressure there should be no reason it won't run. Mag flux is good of course but pressure testing will tell all.

Just saw this comment...I'll see what they'll want for testing the head...I don't want to get in too deep. I will be lapping the valves a bit because there is some pitting on the exhaust seats...don't want to have them tell me it'll be hundreds to press in new seats, etc.

@@EverydayProjects That's even IF they can pressure test it. I'm sure it'll be a few hundo. You can get away with some pitting so long as you can lap them in and have a continuous band of metal where it'll seal if that makes sense. I'm not sure how to explain it... I remember doing a valve job with my Father and a few of them looked pretty haggard. The pitting went through the sealing area on the valve. He had me lap them until there was good clean steel around the pits and it ran fine. I'm sure it's not ideal but it was fine. I'm sure it will definitely be hundreds to have them replaced. I think it was $300 or some such for my flathead engine. The seats were $16 each and then labor. If it comes out OK from Mag Flux and they can at least tell you that it isn't warped, it'll probably be OK.

@@heliarche Yeah, I hear ya. I'll do a video on the valve lapping when the time comes. It seems the valves with seats that are pitted must have been open while the engine was in storage allowing moist salt air in. I'm almost at capacity for jobs in the "to do" list, not the least of which is to get back to the Case tractor and get THAT engine running. On the perkins, I might just lap the valves and hammer that thing back together with a new head gasket and see if it runs, and forego all the mucking at a machine shop....not sure yet.
