How to Stretch Your Triceps (AND HOW NOT TO!)

Learning how to stretch your triceps is something you should do regardless of whether you are just starting out or are an advanced lifter. Why? Because tight triceps can impact the health of your shoulders in a big way. Many do not realize that the long head of the triceps attaches to the shoulder blade (just inferior to the socket or glenoid fossa) that enables the muscle to impact the motion of the shoulder. In this video, I’ll show you the right way to stretch your triceps to ensure that you really get a good stretch.
In order to stretch the medial and lateral heads of the triceps you simply have to maximally bend your elbow. Since these two heads cross only the elbow joint and nothing else, you only have to make sure that your elbows are bent to start feeling the stretch in these two heads. That said, these heads rarely get tight since they are only crossing one joint. What you mainly feel in a properly executed triceps stretch is the long head which has an attachment on the scapula.
Many people will try and stretch their triceps with an overhead tricep stretch position. The first mistake that many make here is confusing the sensation of skin pull with an actual triceps stretch. Try it for yourself. Grab the skin on the back of your arm and pull as I show you in the video and you will feel a “stretch” regardless of whether the elbow is fully flexed or not. This is not a true stretch. This is just a normal discomfort of the pulling that gets confused for it.
The next problem with raising the arm and performing the stretch as I show it is that many people do not have the shoulder mobility to do this without pain. In order to get your shoulder overhead into this position you need adequate amounts of both shoulder external rotation and thoracic extension. Far too many people lack these two critical motions and the attempt to stretch their triceps with the common overhead stretch leads to discomfort or pain in the shoulder.
To correct the stretch you really have to ensure that you are concentrating on separating the elbow from the point of attachment on the scapula. You need to make sure that the scapula does not rotate upward for this to happen (or at least is limited). You can do this by holding onto your scapula with your free hand and trying to gradually elevate your elbow by leaning into wall or a machine at the gym.

For about a year now, I've been having shoulder issues. Because of this man and his stretching videos (especially this one and the pec minor/major one), I feel no shoulder pain throughout my day and when I do my workouts. I haven't been able to do shoulder press for a very long time because of the pain and now, I am getting back into it. I nearly cried when I felt no pain whatsoever. Yep! I had serious shoulder pain for almost a year from training. Following his advice and making sure my form was perfect during all pressing (and some non pressing) movements allowed me to get better fast. No stretches or physio exercises did anything for me, it was just good form, and time for healing. Learned so much from Jeff.

Jeff! I lost 45 pounds in 3 months following as much of what you teach in your videos as I could! Succes is following me till now. From 245 to 200 lbs, from 42% to 22% body fat! From 142 to 156 lbs lean mass! Muscles don't show yet but belt sizes are dropping and selfesteem is rising up. I promisse I'll keep till I reach at least 10% bf and 175 lbs lean mass! *Summary:* The stretch shown at 0:25 actually does nothing to stretch the triceps because its actually the skin stretching. To get a good stretch, 2:40 but if that hurts the shoulders, you probably dont have good shoulder mobility. To fix, 4:20 & 4:55

From 2 days my triceps got so tight that my hand didn't even going more than half up side. Just 2 time stretch for a minute as you're showing in this video and my pain gone like more than 50%. Thanks Man I‘ve worked out many years. But unfortunately every time after some weeks, I get injured, and had to pause my workout. I‘ve done the trizeps stretching wrong all these years. Now I‘m 55 years old and recovering from a cracked shoulder-tendon. But I‘ve started to work out again this week. With baby weights, and exercises which doesn’t strain my right shoulder too much. I was having under shoulder pain I thought it was tennis elbow so I searched tricep stretches. I found other videos but I love this one rhe best because he uses other thing than pulling on your arm.I like the machine description soon as I did the stretch my pain went away in one part of my elbow COMPLETELY GONE.. Finally, an explanation of how to really stretch the triceps! Jeff is right, everybody says to do the thing with your elbow up in the air and your hand on your upper back somewhere. I've always wondered why I never really felt it in the right area and blamed it on myself for not doing it right.

Thanks again, you're saving my life. I obsess over non-stretched muscles and think about it all the time because I feel the body. Just by holding down the scapula it stretches the base of the tricep, exacly where I needed it haha.

This really helps! I couldn't stretch my triceps and it was extremely sore after AX1 Week 2 day 1 - push up Pyramid set. I pushed really hard to finish the sets but didnt really stretch well after workout, so for the last two days I was unable to move by upperbody well. Thanks! Jeff

I do the first one, the faulty one that is, but instead of using my other hand on the elbow, i take a band, grab it with my stretch arm, and pull with my other arm from behind my back. Works great, and i can really feel the stretch. Also, foam rolling your tricep, or using a ball on it is helping too. Ive had some problems with my triceps, but its getting better since i started implementing this.

After doing too many pushups i got this tricep tendonitis and in pain for past 3 days. After doing this stretch just once for about a minute pain reduced about 50%. Amazing.

Thanks for the video, I decided to start going to the gym a couple of days ago. I didn't really do my reps right or rest between sets, especially during my lat pulldowns.
