It is important for dancers to have good leg strength. Greater strength in leg creates speed and force, resulting in more powerful movement. Bharatanatyam involves extensive usage of Aramandi (a squat stance). A balance between strength and flexibility needs to be understood and encouraged among dancers to ensure that they are properly trained, to promote health and career longevity, which is the sole purpose of this video.
Here I am sharing my personal favourite - A squat routine which has helped me with my Aramandi and Nritta. I hope they are useful to you too.

I am 40. I joined Bharatnatyam classes with my 6 yr old daughter. Your exercise has proved wonderful to make my leg stronger. I have tolerable knee pain though, but that hasn't stopped me from taking the venture...

I couldn't keep up with you entirely. I was able to do 5-7 repititions of each exercise. But it really improved my Araimandi. I am a newbie at Bharatnatyam. Thank you so much for sharing this. I'll incorporate this in my daily routine.👍👍❤️❤️❤️

Am following this routine from last 1 month regularly... And it works wonder... Mam, honestly, this is just a video for you, but for me, I can say that this video has given me a new life... For I m dancing after 3 years. 3 long years of illness got me away from dancing. I was even not able to do tattadavu and nattadavu properly. Due to these routines, I m now slowly gaining flexibility and strength. Kudos to you! Lots and lots of love from Gujarat!❣️

I am new to practicing Bharatnatyam from Bangladesh .. literally I'm having pain on my thigh while doing aramandi... I searched for how could i prepare my legs for foot work n found ur video. How often should we do this routine? Can this be used as a warm up before starting to dance? Thank you.

@@aneeshyakandiyil8138 We are doing non-stop plie squats for say, 3mins*(as many times). That will be hard on legs, if done correctly. I prefer dedicating one day in a week for leg workout.(ps : This routine is "part" of my regime and not the only workout) You must rest the muscle at least for a day or 2 before you work on same muscle again. So if you can afford to do it 2/3 times a week without over straining the same muscle, it will be good. I use this for strengthening and not for warm up :)

@@sureshkumbhar4357 glad you like it. A very general recommendation would be to not exercise the same body part on consecutive days. Let the muscle recover for a day or two before you hit the same muscle again.

Since a hyperextended knee is an injury, I would recommend that you get some help from a physiotherapist. But I could definitely make a video on knee strengthening exercises. Have noted down your suggestion. Thank you and please stay tuned.. :)

Hey! Make sure you don't overstrain your leg muscles by doing it everyday. It is recommended to rest the muscle for 2 days before you work on the same muscle again for better results.

I love bharanatyam and actually started learning 16 years ago when I was 22 but stopped due to knee problems. I would love to start again but have no idea how to because of the knee pain. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do? Thank you.

Firstly find out the cause of the knee pain. Visit a chiropractor. If you already know the cause, start doing things that alleviate your knee pain. Exercise regularly and you will be able to dance again!

Hi I am actually watching this during lock down but this is really helpful I have been trying this for a month and this has been great I can sit in a rain and I for like 10 mins with not much of pain Pls also post video to build knee strength ❤😇

Glad it helped! You need to work on muscles surrounding the knee to strengthen it, since knee is a joint. Will try to come up with a more elaborate leg routine for it. Ty for the suggestion :)
