Blue Spark, Blue Snowball, Rode VideoMic Sound Comparison bit.ly/YdX6qL
Blue Spark Unboxing • Blue Spark Unboxing
The Blue Spark is an XLR, Condenser, Cardiod Microphone from Blue Microphones.
XLR meaning it needs an XLR (analog) cable and connection.
Condeser meaning it needs external power (phantom power) which is found in most mixers.
Cardiod meaning that it's polar pattern (pickup patter) is relatively narrow and it focuses in on sound in front of the microphone.
The Blue Spark is made entirely of metal and has an extremely nice build quality. It is a very sturdy mic.
It comes with a nice pop filter and a decent shock mount which are pretty good, despite a few flaws. They are both nice bonuses that come with the mic and I still use them.
The sound quality of the Blue Spark is great. This mic really seems to excel with bass and mids. It also does fairly decent with highs and trebles. Blue's website says that the Spark can be used to mic and record anything from vocals, to guitar, to percussion and wind instruments.
Personally, I cannot tell much difference between normal recording mode and focus mode, but that probably comes in handy more when you are recording instruments with a lot of reverb and sound.
Overall, I think this is an EXCELLENT microphone and you can't go wrong with buying it. Really the only downside is the price. Some people think $200 for a mic is crazy, but others have no problem investing that much into something they will use for many years. (Also $200 is quite cheap compared to some mics that cost upwards of $5,000 haha)

I fixed the spinning mic thing right away. Thought I have used it a few times when using it with another in stereo. And I also fixed the mic from dropping after moving. Sometimes mine would drop without moving it. So I used clips to make it not spin. And I removed the Blue thumb screw and clip, and replaced it with a nice plastic one. The plastic threads on deeper, and tightens with a flathead. I have moved it for 6 weeks now, I have yet to tighten it.

Do you think this would pick up the sound from a game on a TV if the mic is sitting in front of the TV (but facing away from it)? Not directly in front of the TV, but how much sound does it pick up from behind?

Thanks.. do you use raw settings or do you edit the voice over in a editing program? Because currently I am only using iMovie and it sounds OK.. but if I record on my custom pc then its only negative thing is its fan noise.... so that can really be annoying. I just don't know if I should get this considering its much higher price.

I record straight into Audacity for my on camera stuff and then put it in Premiere. When I do voice overs I record directly in to premiere. I don't edit it heavily or put effects on it or anything. Also, my PC fans are slightly loud and they don't show up much in recordings.

I have the blue snowball which cost me around $50 on Cyber Monday when there were lots of sales. But although I may look for a upgrade in the future, I think its good. I am still just starting out... of course thats all just my opinion.

I was hoping you could give me some advice. The distributor I got this mic off is closed today and I have just installed a silicone washer between the steel base and the orange body. I am unsure if I have missing parts or something but when I first tried to tighten the body (basically twisting the base on its thread to force the orange housing up into the top. I assume I have washers or similar missing because before the unit was tightened the base had pushed the selector button out. Even with the selector button out there was too much gap and the base ran out of thread before tightening up or cinching the three body components together. I have three cardboard and one silicon washer in now and the unit is tight but I am concerned I have somewhat sealed the body using silicon and I am worried the circiutry may overheat. I would imagine the diaphragm section of the mic might allow reasonable air flow upwardsthough? Any Advice? Anyone?

Hi, I have just found this review :D mic sounds well and I have been looking to replace my www.trust.com/en/product/16973-starzz-microphone ... only point I am bit unsure about... should I get Blue Spark or Blue Spark Digital? I mean, digital would be much easier and cheaper to setup, as mixer costs about 60-70€ over here but if it is worth the cost I may wait a month or two and save money for it. I will be using my mic mostly for let's plays and podcasts, but my GF plays Ukulele so she may want to record her plays too :D And one more thing, I have no sound cards expect my motherboard one and USB sound card from tesoro kuven that I got with headset. Should I invest into it too?

Need a dedicated mic. On a pretty tight budget. My PC fans are somewhat loud, and I do not have a DSLR. Can I get the rode mic into my computer fairly easily? Or should I go with the Yeti?

I'd go with the Yeti over the Rode VideoMic. If I were to go back, I'd invest in the VideoMic Pro since it has onboard output boost which would nix the hissing issue in the butt. I tried plugging the Rode directly in the PC but it still had some kind of weird hissing and interference. Might have been the port/plugs I was using. But yeah, I'd go with the Yeti.

I was spoiled in 2010-2011, when I used my friends collection of $600 to $1,000 condenser mic's for my demo. I remember buying a condenser mic just to have 1, and record with. It was an AKG Perception 120, and I was definitely not happy with it. I also had an old school P.A. system without a feedback suppressor, which makes a huge difference in getting to use your full volume in a small room. So I almost bought 1 of these Blue Spark mic's, because I had $250, so it was between this, the blue colored one with the USB connection, an Audio Technica, or a Sterling ST55. I was given an Audio Technica that's USB compatible, & it's a lot more convenient, so I thought about getting the blue colored Blue Spark, but I have an EIE AKAI M-Box, & I ought to make use of it. I used to be lazy, & just use my MacBook's built in mic. I made 1 decent recording that way, but I recorded in the confined space of my bathroom, which has decent acoustics. So I bought the ST55, which was most recommended for recording acoustic guitar tracks, & singing. The only thing holding me back, is that Apple stopped making their Macbook's w/ disc drives, so I'm about to go out, & buy an Apple USB Superdrive, so I can reinstall the program for my M-Box. Anyways, good review...

Hey man i bought the rode nt1 a and it was only after that i realized that it is phantom powered, so i can't just plug it into my dslr (3.5mm jack) and start recording...... but i noticed that you are recording audio with the blue spark (also phantom powered) and filming too! So how do you do it, do you record it directly into your camera, seperately and then sync it or what? Because i am a run&gun shooter and i can't carry arround a mixer and power it....... if you could help me out, or anyone else it would be much apreciated, cause i'm stuck here with a 150$:/.....
@TylerMiller
@TylerMiller 10 жыл бұрын
Film Slate I run the Blue Spark to my sound mixer and then run an audio out from my mixer to my camera whenever I use the spark. I'm sure there are interfaces out there that are run and gun style of interfaces for phantom powered devices, but I don't know of any personally. :/

Tyler Miller Quick question, does the mixer add A LOT of great and usefull features, or a simple phantom PSU would be pretty solid?
@TylerMiller
@TylerMiller 10 жыл бұрын
Film Slate Well for the Blue Spark there is no volume control on the mic, so all of my volume control comes from my Mixer, which is kind of an important feature. There might be some phantom psu's with volume control built in, but you will need something that will let you control mic volume if the mic doesn't have a volume control itself.

I know it may sound stupid to some people, but I just bought one of those mics and I can't screw the pop filter in - the screw won't stop rotating and it doesn't seem the as easy as in this video to put it on. So,the question is: Did I bought a faulty unit or am I too stupid to get this thing on? haha

Then you have a bad eq then. Make sure its closer to your mouth , and to have a decent eq. I usually have a boomier sound for recording my beatboxing routines. Make sure to have a isolation shield and to be in a close vicinity of this mic.
