I bought my first one in '98, and I still use it. It has a crack in the gear housing, but that's my own fault- I cranked down on it with a vise to hold it and use it as a stationary grinder and cracked it, but even like that it's worked fine for probably 10 years.

Solid idea! If I had room for it, I'd make my own in a heartbeat. Only criticism is that instead of a plywood top and 2x4 slats I probably would have used more steel square tube as slats, then topped it off with aluminum tread plate. Would definitely cost more but the weight would absolutely be comparable. I think tread plate would look nicer and would hold up better to fluids being spilled onto it.

I think this is absolutely genius, and my hats off to you, sir! I've tried solving the no bench dilemma for years. My solution was a heavy homemade bench and an engine hoist. That was fine for building rigid frames but now I ride a Heritage Softail and find myself in the same old boat, lol. I'm not sure if your solution would work for me or not, but I loved watching this video and it's definitely got my gears turning... Well done, indeed.

Jake, add some metal cross bracing on the underneath uprights. Diagonal members will eliminate any lateral sway. Also get your ties downs out further, as that will stabilize the bike laterally as well. Diagonals keep parts from moving side to side, and make your whole set-up more stable than it already seems to be. Nice job. :)

Add rail slots towards the back of the board panel by the rear wheel so you can add another wheel chuck fornmore security...just a neat idea. Very awesome build!!!

I did something similar to lift my 900lb bikes. Difference being i built a whole new frame around the existing frame and then welded the HF jack to it to not only add rigidity by widen the frames footprint by 6-8" which greatly increased the overall stability. Of course now the jack weighs in excess of 90+ lbs. Nice job BTW

I have that exact same jack and I love it. I've been able to lift full dresser harleys and it's never failed. The only problem is the rubber pads came off so I'll probably be getting some spray on bed liner to remedy that

Thanks - that gave me the confidence to cut my perfectly good lift in half and stretch it out .... we used a welder and heavier iron - no plywood - metal top - works great :) take care - cheers from Vancouver Island, BC, Canada :)

That is cool! If you are worried about stability, you could build an outrigger that goes out a couple feet on each side that bolts to the extended frame rails you made...unbolt it for storage.

I love it! I have one of those lifts and been looking for a table lift to swap the engine on my ducati 1199S panigale but I'm on a tight budget so this idea is perfect for me

I use the Harbor Freight model with my 2008 gold wing and have never felt it unsafe. I think if you were concerned it would have been easier to have added two extensions with casters to the front.

Pretty good. I just built mine with a used lift, same type. I have a flux welder, "donated" solid door, used steel bed frame (angle iron) and found T bar. Paid $30 for lift used and $20 for hardware (carrage bolts, eye bolts, nuts and washers. Currently working on wheel chock with bed frame angle iron.

Very practical. The only thing is that the bike wobbles a little more than id probably be comfortable with but still very useful. My dad bought a used pneumatic lift and its pretty useful but its definitely a permanent structure in our shop now

Great build. I would add thin gauge steel to the top. That way when oil or any liquids spill it's an easy clean and wouldn't be absorbed into the bare wood.

I agree with the wife, you should paint/treat the wood so it doesnt take up moisture and get crappy. This is awesome btw

Got my Harbor Freight lift table for $299 (it goes on sale frequently) and love it! No stability issues at any height. Holds by 250lb enduro bike at any height and comes 95% assembled in the crate. And I have no problem moving it with the bike on it around the garage!

pro tip: you should also use some wood glue in addition to the wood you join with screws. wood screws work loose; wood glue does not. if you made two of these, one with and one without glue, you wouldn't notice a difference today... but you would ten years from now. wood glue is literally stronger than wood, with proper clamping; which you get with the screws. so years from now, when those screws start to ream their channels out, the glue will still be rock solid. also, you always dampen the wood with a sponge before applying the wood glue. it helps the glue to seep into the pores.

also spring washers, nylocs or locktite on those bolts as they will loosen themselves off

woodology 101. Nice tip. Lock Washers work well. Nylocs are better, they resist vibration loosening. All good tips.

Great build. Really well explained. A couple people have mentioned extending the tie-downs out for more stability which I think is also a good idea. I do have one suggestion. At 3:40ish when you are going to make a custom L bracket for the back pins I had a thought, as I also do not have a welder. Simpson Strong Tie makes a bracket they call a "DJT Deck Joist Tie," that I think might work. It has that "z" sort of shape where you could bolt one facing to the frame and the other would allow for your connection. Thanks again for the video.

I use my harbor freight engine hoist (cherry picker) and a short tow strap. With my tank removed, I lift my XR600R from the top frame to +5' AFF. The hoist is very wide and the load is skookem secure. You can rotate the bike to some degree also.

Awsome Jake! Maybe some of that no-slip stick-on stuff used on staircases etc where the tires roll and park. Also, maybe a 2x4x36" piece under the handlebars (across) removable with wingnuts to get those ratchet strap eyebolts out further. Thanks for the video!

Thanks for taking the time to put this up here. I now wish I'd snagged TWO of those 1,500 lb. ATV Lifts at that Sidewalk Sale a few years ago, when they were basically giving a whole stack of them away for 90% off. I think I paid like $10 for mine just as an "impulse buy". But it's proved itself too useful as-is to cut up.

5 years on harbor frieghts lift. Use it to lift my heritage classic for repair ,cleaning,etc,and my other 6 bikes too. Moving around is no problem, I lift it all the way up and can push it anywhere I want with minimal effort.

Turned out better than I would have imagined, but I wouldn't trade my harbor freight lift for that thing! BTW, the harbor freight lift rolls around just fine. I have limited space too, and my lift rests up against the wall out of the way until needed. Very stable too, with my 800+ pound bike on it.

My harbor freight lift rolls great its on wheels. I love my lift and i use it alot never had issues. btw i bought my lift for 300 bucks with a coupon.

You should just roll some bedliner on it. Keep it from absorbing moisture in the air or oil, and give it some texture. And itd look alot better 😛 I might make one of these down the road.

Nice. The only thought I had was putting another set of eye bolts on the sides roughly below the handle bars. That way it's more stable when strapped down.

Great Idea Jake. Maybe to help the rocking of the bike side to side you could make some bars that extend the tie downs out to the side that could swivel or be removable. You could also make some for the feet to as a safety measure so the whole thing doesn't topple over on ya. Great job tho for sure. cheers!

Watching the lift go up and down. It looks like the joint on the side you load the bike might need some more reinforcement as it seems to flex quite a bit. Other then that I'm quite surprised at how well it turned out.

Those bolts alone probably don't hold well enough, I would get bigger bars and get them welded in and braced in a couple of places like Cappe said, fun project though.

It seems that end connecting peace is hit by lifting arms when those go down, so reinforcing bolt connection only leads to tress in that area. He just needs to move back lifting arms towards center, i'd say 4 inches and problem is solved. For the bolt connections, suuure you can take it apart move easily.. kinda, but he has what 5k worth of bikes and multitude of other tools... and not even couple hundred bucks stick welder, wtf? Painting the plywood would also be good idea to increase its life and painting it later becomes bit of a problem when its soaked by oil and other crap.

Weld that shit. Those little cheap home depot bolts in a bag are going to fail. Monte Blackwell,j ust because someone has a high sub count dont mean shit. Many of us dont care to put time into a youtube channel. Great concept,but needs to be stronger and the base needs to be wider. Atleast somekind of out riggers

A couple of door hinges on the end and a reinforced plywood ramp so you don't have to screw with the load ramp. If you do it right, the ramp would fold up on the deck when you store it. I'm impressed it worked out as well as it did. I know you don't care but some liquid bed liner for the deck so it doesn't soak up fluids when maintaining your bikes. Plus it would add a little grip.

I use the harbor freight lift all the time and have never had an issue with it wanting to tip forward or with any instability issues at all really. It's also super easy to move around the garage as long as your garage floor is smooth concrete. It's also on sale for 25-33 percent off multiple times a year. So I only paid around $275. With all that being said, this looks like a fun project, but not necessary for my applications.

I made one out of a piece of thick sheet aluminum a friend gave me. I used my circular saw and an old blade I didn't care about to cut it to the perfect size. This worked like a champ. Then I took it to a local metal shop to have a 1", 90 degree lip bent on all sides. I carefully planned it to fit perfectly over three old, heavy duty milk crates I had laying around. I mounted a cheap wheel chock up front and made tie down points for the bar straps to attach to. I already had a ramp. It works great, weighs next to nothing, and when I'm not using it, it just stacks in a corner.

I would go for something else unless youre content making maybe $12 an hour...even once you figure it out the race guys for Roczen and Musquin make well under $20 an hour according to them when i asked

Great video bro. Have one of those loft and was looking for a bigger one with limited space. I’ll be matching the box tubes and weld them but I’ll be working on a Harley over here. Also, I’’m a honking about putting longer lift legs. If I do it, I’ll share pics with you.
