Should you have cheat meals or cheat days when trying to lose weight?
This is a pretty delicate topic but it’s very common for people to be disciplined all week and then blow it all off on the weekend. In one day, you can literally destroy something you were building all week - cuz it honestly doesn't take very much to wreck your liver or your hormones.
There's a reason why you see people stay stagnant and never hit their goals. And it's often cuz they let the wheels come off during the weekends.
For most people, you can't get 100%of the results by only doing 80% of the work. Sure, it's important to celebrate milestones, but just because it's Saturday doesn't mean a boozy brunch with shitty food won't affect the progress you made all week.
If you believe in cheat meals or cheat days, that's totally fine, just get ready for a long road ahead. Sorry
It's called a lifestyle change and identity shift for a reason

I eat a cheat meal like every 2-3 days. So long as you factor it into your daily cals and u even work out a little bit extra the day of, it can easily fit.

I have a maintenance of 2700 calories, i eat less than 1500 calories while still getting more than 140g of protein daily (i do high intensity weight training as well) and i have a cheat day every sunday and i eat around 4000 calories so that puts me in a deficit of 7000 calories per week and 1kg body fat = aprox 7700 calories so will i loose weight at a good rate or no?

@@stungaming2791 idk y ur asking me big dawg. The logic makes sense to lose like 1.5lb a week. Test for yourself. If eating around half your maintenance 6 days but being gluttonous 1 day works for you, cool. For me I like having semi frequent smaller pleasures. I’ve managed to lose almost 40lbs this way

Want to just do a diet? no cheat meals. If you want to make it a life change have a cheat meal. I think strict every day diets arent sustainable for most people. If its only chicken broccoli and salads every day once you reach your goal weight you will probably go back to your own eating habits that got you overweight in the 1st place because you reached your goal. You had a finish line and you hit it. If you want long term I say have a cheat meal or cheat day once a week. This will help you maintain sanity and inable you to have a sustainable well roubded diet for longer. Longevity over speed I say. its worth it to slow your progress to go farther in your diet. Do you guys. Only you know whats working for you!

Calories in Calories out people. That’s it. Eat what the fuck you want. Just try your best to eat healthy most of the time for a longer life. But cutting out certain foods completely for weight loss is not necessary because due to thermogenesis, it’s all about calories in and calories out, not what you eat. More about how much of it are you eating in comparison to your maintenance calories!

If you eat over your maintenance calories with fruits and veggies, you will get fat! It’s just harder to do because most people don’t LOVE fruits and veggies due to western diets. But healthy food can make you fat too, so could that be a cheat day if you eat too much veggies and fruits? Right. Calories in and calories out.

I do a cheat day, i eat whatever i want through the day, and the day after i comeback to my diet and workout, and im losing weight just fine, i think a cheat day is very important,you deserve it after a whole week of working hard, you don't wanna feel like torturing yourself

That’s why you do that shit when you are already at your goal and keep maintaining it. Then it’s hard for you to lose it. You only have that cheat day once and month at the most.

Cheat meals are super useful for helping your progress along. I like doing mine on Sundays and eating carb-heavy foods like meat lovers pizza with garlic knots or birria tacos

I don't do cheat days unless it's an actual event that lasts an entire day. I don't set cheat meals at all even, I leave that for impromptu dinner invites with friends where we'd grab burgers, KBBQ, ice cream, etc. which only happens like once or twice a month and I find it perfect to maintain flexibility.

agreed i always found when i set goals and milestones and then reinforced that with more of the same i did better (like eat better to cut to a certain weight/get 6pack then reward myself with a fancy expensive healthy meal). a reward that pulls me deeper into that lifestyle. like a gamer who wants to improve his art going to top tier art museum after getting one of his pieces hung up at a local gallery vs buying the latest console and going back to vegging vs pushing really hard through pain and perservance to reach an arbitrary limit and then allow myself to decompress in a less than optimal way. that feels great too but its hard to get out of that push/pull dynamic im more of a jocko/goggins style. pick a style and stick with it. if im grinding, im grinding. thats my life now. if im being lazy, fatty, poopypants mindset then thats what im doing. i go through it and eventually make it as exhausting as possible to get to the next phase where im just craving the next step. so if im in a fast food phase i will just indulge until i am literally sick and begging for veggies and the mere thought of a cheeseburger makes me sick rather commit to a playstyle for a 3/6/12/24/36/60 month period than stop/start. its also nice to look back at these sort of "eras" of your life and compare/contrast and make adjustments before you adjust your playstyle again

i mean in 6 months lost 70lb built muscle and at 171lb now thats with one cheat meal usually 2500-3000 calories. But I do fast and eat one meal after so.

I have been skinny my whole life, every day is a cheat meal for me. But even if you are trying to lost weight.... take the cheat meal, enjoy some food that you like... life is too short to be restricting your calories or eating lame boring food every day.

I dont like cheat days, but do have grace days when the struggle to get the whole family fed and make life happen. I try not to go off the rails, but may have a little something I wouldn't normally. Im just getting started and seeing some progress. Im treating it like a marathon. Incorporating as many good decisions as I can.

Having one cheat day is actually recommended idk what this guy is on. Yes you’ll gain numbers on the scale but most (if not all) of it is water weight and will naturally come off when you get back to normal routine. Its great for people who get burnt out easily because you know if you just discipline yourself for 6 days then you’ll be rewarded at the end. Otherwise if you discipline yourself for weeks on end your cravings will sneak up on you and you’ll just go back to eating badly every day. Especially since people who want to lose fat dont see reuslts until a few months in typically its easier for them to feel like its not working and just give up.

This is very true, i used to be in a caloric deficit to lose fat and would have 1 cheat day every week, still dropped fat and weight on the scale only thing u really gain on cheat days is water weight which can be lost very quickly by moving around more

It’s a calories intake balance in the end. What some people don’t get is that if you go on a 200cal deficit per day and then a 1200cal surplus on a Sunday cheat meal is not 6 days to 1 ….is a 0 deficit balance

I cheat once a month on keto. I exercise also . So it may knock me out of ketosis but I won’t necessarily stop loosing weight. That’s what intense exercise is for. And 2 or 3 days later I’m back in ketosis. No big deal. I’m not cheating myself. I’m keeping my sanity. I attempt fast everyday. It’s not consistent because some days I do 12 or 18 hours. Some days I do 23 hrs if my meal is already prepared. Whatever works best for you. I’m still dropping lbs so I’m not worried.

With the mindset already set in place of discipline and moderation of foods when losing weight/getting fit I think cheat days are acceptable. Like you said, it depends on how long of a timeline you want to work with to reach your goals. I believe you should treat your body well, don’t over do it, and enjoy the foods you eat

I lost over 130 pounds in around a year from 278 down to my current weight of 147. I feel like having a controlled cheat day once in a while is a good thing. I do maintenance calories for 1 week then go back to hitting the cut in order to minimize cravings and boost morale. Its also important to do on aggressive weight loss to slow metabolic adaptation.

It doesn't have to be a full meal or just a whole day of stuffing unhealthy junk food , what I do is just start my day off normally following diet and just slip in a piece of cake or a pack or crisps or milk chocolate like little things not like huge calories meal like a burger pizza milkshake and that too I eat it only one fix time of the day not all day so I think that works

If i cut out chaat meals i crave.them so bad i loose all sense of control. Im talking i can taste it, like a physical pain. And it leads to depression when i think i cant have this at all ever. Depression makes.me.want to binge eat. Sometkmes its better to just.eat.the freaking pizza.

I kinda don't 100% agree with you. A once a week, or even once every ten days to two weeks, cheat day isn't necessarily that bad. You should know that the metabolism adjusts when one is dieting so an occasional "cheat" meal can keep it a bit off balance and can, actually, do more good than harm. I know because I lost over 110 pounds decades ago doing exactly this. I'm not saying that every individual's metabolism operates in the same manner because, of course, it doesn't, but, again, it MAY (emphasis on may) not necessarily torpedo everyone's weight loss goals

Made the ultimate decision of picking a cheat meal over drinking and absolutely destroyed 2 3x3s at in n out with fries. I'm at that point where I need a cheat meal at the end of the week to top off caloric deficit in order to gain weight because I can't physically eat my way to 3000 calories daily completely clean.

There is proof that being happy improves your weightloss. Personally i do a cheat meal which is not gonna be sugar based. So for example I will get a chicken tikka masala or sushi and if i feel like going overboard i go for a gyros and thats usually the type of food i cheat with. It makes me happy and excited for the work ahead, not having cheat meals makes me miserable.

It's possible to have a cheat meal it just needs to be planned I used to tell people that I lost 100 pounds by eating Pink's Hot Dogs/Poli Bacon Burrito Dog with a side of Chilli Cheese Fries. This was of course once a week with an extra cardio session in the morning and ate super light until it was time for Pink's. I did lose the hundred and had my Pink's as well-It Was Planned out and it worked

So I lost 17kg in 4 months I was in a 1500 cal deficit 6x a week then Saturday I'd do what I want not go crazy but just eat what I fancied. Off course my weight would go up a little but was water weight then over the next few days It would go down but by the time Saturday would come it would drop and drop even lower! So it worked for me! Kept me on my diet if I didn't do it I wouldn't be able to do it yes I could off been abit less strict with it in the week and balanced it out but I'd rather be very strict in the week then 1 Day off the week! This wouldn't work if I slacked off in the week! So think off it this way 6 steps forward then taking 1 step back! Also eating 1 good day isn't going to help you like eating 1 bad day won't kill your gains!

2 cheat meals a week for me with restrictions like moderate food quantity, no oily, fried or too sweet foods along with exercising 1 hour 5 times a week and I have lost 7kg in one year. May not be too much progress to some but I’m happy with it because I was able to follow this routine and balance it with my job.

I have cheat meals but they are not conventional and still sit in my coloric budget and nutrient macros i could eat them permanently but I dont thats why i consider them cheatmeals like having some watermelon or some blended mangos and coconut shred in some half frozen no sugar greek yogurt hell ive put hot sauce on my hardboiled eggs and considered it a cheat day😅

Well for my own opinion, if you're goal is to loose weight, all you you have to do is to focus on your diet, once you are close to your goal weight i guess you can do a cheat day once in a while, just remember don't do binge eating, after all the sole purpose of doing it is to loose weight and have a self discipline, on my case im 129kilo before i start this diet thing, sometimes i do a cheat meal, but i didn't do binge eating, now after 5months im only 87kilo ☺️ and im still happy doing it, because i still eat something im craving but in moderation. On my experience, its better to do cheat meal rather than Cheat Day, because doing a cheat meal you still have a limits to yourself, but on cheat day, its giving you an access to eat everything you like on that day, same as doing binge eating.

Cheat meals are okay every now and then. If it’s my dad’s birthday and he wants a party, I’ll have a cheat meal. Moments like those are more important than a diet, as long as you’re on track most of the time, enjoy your life.

If your health and fitness is a LIFESTYLE, then you need to incorporate foods and habits that are sustainable over the duration of your life. Never having a cheat meal isn’t sustainable for a lifetime of fitness; maybe that’s for short term fitness goals.

I don’t plan cheat meals. But they slip up sometimes once a week or twice a month. Mostly in social settings with friends. But the next day, I do my regular workout PLUS an EXTRA 40 minutes of cardio. (I already incorporate 20minutes of cardio each session. After cheat meal, it’s an hour) I try not to stress over that stuff. I’ve reached my fitness goals for this year.

Once you successfully achieve your ideal weight goals and consistently stay there for couple of months, you can incorporate once a month cheat day, even during your cheat days, don't consume more than two meals at a stretch.

After losing a significant amount of weight, I began letting my self cheat every Saturday, and I realized that my weight loss did not progress. I was simply making it back to where I was the week before now I do not cheat, and I honestly don’t even need to.

Need to eat whatever you want to eat when you feel like leptin levels is very low.means you need to eat one big meal to reset the leptin level therefor, you will burn more fats during body is at rest.

If I drink alcohol I’ll lose most of my muscle gains no matter how much less or great. If I cheat on my food as long as I stay with my calories I’m good, so I’ve given up alcohol

My whole life has been a cheat day, so now that I don’t eat fast food, soda, etc… if i eat a slice of pizza once a month or something, I’m pretty sure I’m still doing way better and I’ll be alright.

I think it depends on where you are on your fitness journey. I'm mid 30s and used to be around 280 lbs of flab but am at 185 lbs around 13-14%bf now. When I had a lot of weight to lose I allowed one cheat meal a month. Now that I'm pretty much around my goal weight I allow one cheat meal a week as long as I'm continuing to put in the work. But half the time I decide to only have a semi-cheat meal instead where ill allow myself to go over my calories for the day but its made up of healthier options like a massive bowl of oatmeal with nuts, blueberries strawberries and a little honey and the damage is much more minimal. If you have a lot of work ahead of you stay consistent and keep the junk food out of the house. If you do decide to cheat just make sure you don't turn that cheat day into a cheat week haha

You can have a full day of cheating once a week and still lose weight it will just slow down your progress but if your in it for the long haul then slowing the process don’t really matter cuz your gonna slowly lose weight no matter what you’ll just gain 4 pounds of water after every cheat day

One cheat meal on sundays calorie wise I stay within my calories for the day but I don’t worry about any other macros. I eat what I want but keep it at a reasonable portion and don’t over eat it and I treat everything else in the day the same.
