How to TEST Your Coolant for the Winter (Before Major DAMAGE is Done)

In this video I cover what how to properly test your coolant and top off your radiator so it is a 50/50 mix that way your car wont overheat and your engine block wont freeze or corrode.
Also if the heat in your car is weak or you dont have heat, in this video I will show you how to bleed the air out of the cooling system so you can get heat Coolant is 50% antifreeze and 50% distilled water. And no, freeze plugs are not going to save your engine block from freezing and cracking every time.

35 years of being a car enthusiast and the best thing about Chris' videos is I either learn something or remember something but never find myself saying "oh no, don't do that" or "that's not how it's done". Thanks to you I was able to replace the tie rods on my car by myself and only needed to pay for the parts and pay for the alignment of my wheels. Now I just got done replacing my break pads and rotors also and I pull a compressed piston on my rear wheel and broke the seal. It was a expensive mistake, but I did learn from it. Thank you for you videos

Heyo Chris, perfect timing of a video. I’m in school for small engine (lawnmowers, atvs, weed whackers, stuff like that) and I’m in the cooling section right now. Even though a Jaguar and a Kawasaki are two completely different things, it still helps to know the proper cooling mixture and maths.

Being someone from Malaysia, specifically a mere 4.4 degrees north of the equator where we never go below 24°C or 75°F, I always find 'antifreeze' confusing and it's to be something needed in cold places only, turns out it's a 50/50 mix and has higher boiling temp. Glad to learn that! Also, I always use hose wooder for my wipers since it doesn't freeze here. Not something I'd recommend but for people where I'm from it's pretty normal.

Another great video; well done. One suggestion for changing out your windshield washer reservoir: use a fluid evacuator and pull the old fluid out to empty the reservoir, then add your winter fluid and activate the wiper washers until the new fluid flushes through. In our late 60s now, the wife and I keep a serious distance but we are getting tested in a couple of hours because we may have been exposed when we visited our daughter (a clinic nurse) for Thanksgiving. Her husband, who gets pneumonia nearly every year around this time and has symptoms now. We aren't concerned but we need to know. Who would have thought we would know this little after nearly a year of intense focus?

Not really, lot of cars are like the first one having the top coolant mark in the middle of the overflow tank. With a funnel like that you'd only fill it to the top and had to remove quite a bit of coolant to get the level right.

First slide in the explosive material of choice. I like gun powder cause well it’s very explosive but you can use anything you like. Perfect next we need an ignition something that will detonate it so let’s go grab a simple 9 volt battery. Alright guys and look at that it’s that simple. Just hook up the battery alight and where done. Now place the timer I use I simple stop watch we don’t want this exploding on us now we want to see a timer. Good look how cool that looks. If you have synthetic, you should be good no matter the temperature!

@@chrisfix Extremely important for older cars that have analog blinkers, not so much for newer cars with digital blinkers. BMW drivers never have to worry though, as the cars amazingly don't require fluid!

Good point. Tonight dropped to -10 deg C and my back right blinker stopped working. Forgot to check up on that blinker fluid.

Love all your videos and we learn a lot! Thanks for the antifreeze nerd math! TIP: Keep your old empty or 1/2 empty antifreeze jugs and be sure to mark them as "Premix 50/50" for this tip. Add a mix of 1/2 water and 1/2 antifreeze to the empty jugs OR simply add water to the 1/2 empty jugs! This way it is still in the original containers for safety. We keep an extra jug or 2 of this mix in the car trunk or in the back of the truck in case we have a leak on the side of the road and maybe we can help someone stranded one of these days! Remember to never add cold liquid to an overheated engine, let the engine cool down, then add your liquid. This also helps to keep a consistent mixed solution no matter how much you lose, whatever is left in the vehicle is always 50/50!!!

The spill proof is actually amazing it has really helped me when I’ve had to flush 2 different radiators, and it makes getting the air out so easy that A kid could do it

I appreciate how your sponsors don't ask you to break up the flow of the video or put an annoying intro or outtro. It's just a quick acknowledgement that they support helping everyday people working on their own cars. Also, what's the difference between 50/50 mix and having to mix the coolant yourself? I've always used 50/50 mostly because I'm afraid that I'd put the wrong ratio in or that mixing it with the old coolant and causing an issue with the engine.

Very informative and detailed video. The only thing missing was a caution about Antifreeze and animals who will be poisoned by any spilled if its not cleaned up.

Great video. You can check the age and corrosion protection with a multimeter. If it's bad, change your coolant otherwise metal gets eaten (pitting) alot faster.

Nice video Chris. You could take testing of coolant a little further though. This method only tells you that the coolant is strong enough to stop your car from overheating or the coolant freezing it doesn't tell you if the corrosion inhibitors are still doing their job. To do this use a multimeter. Set it to millivolts scale DC or 20vDC .Put the negative probe on a good ground and the positive probe in to the Antifreeze. The reading should be below 200 millivolts or 0.2v. Anything higher means that the inhibitors are failing and there is an electrolytic reaction taking place. Give it a go.

I skimmed through thought you were gonna show how to tell the antifreeze hasnt turned acidic eating out heater core/fittings ect . Thats why you change coolant . You add for strength anti freeze/anti boil. Your videos are well done 99.9% of the time haha

I remember back in the day when me and my buddies had to cover my cars hood with a thick blanket and park it in a wind resistant spot becuse my Waterpump was leaking and i put pure water in the cooling System. It was like -10 Celsius and I really was woried that my cars Block would crack,so much so I drove it hard to get it up to temperature and then let it sit thru the night... Remember it to this day,nice Video Chris,keep it up Buddy,can't wait for the Turbo Del-Sol video.😁
