"I am never going to finish this project." Well, Sean, if it's any consolation to you, in addition to the Razzie winners of the 80s, you've already covered Battlefield Earth, Catwoman, Revenge of the Fallen, The Last Airbender, Jack and Jill, Breaking Dawn Part 2 (which for some reason is no longer available on Vimeo, you might wanna look into that), Saving Christmas, Fant4stic, Fifty Shades of Grey and Hillary's America. From where I'm standing, you're going at a pretty good pace. Also, I just realized - this year, in November, marks the 10th annivesary of Cinematic Excrement (man, how time flies). Hope you've got something special cooked up.

Shatner's original concept sounds very creative. Not the whole Satan and Hell part but the idea of parodying TV televangelism. It sounds like a good idea and would've been highly topical at the time the movie came out as that decade was seeing a rise of christian televangelism. In a better movie that line "What does god need with a starship" would've been a siring indictment of TV televangelists who rob their followers blind to enrich themselves. But a clever concept does not a good movie make. Shatner needed to give this premise to a talented screenwriter who probably could've written turned this concept into a very good story. It's sad when you realize how good this movie could've been.

Klingons do not/have not always viewed the role of diplomat as worthy of respect. Since it demands the Klingon doing the job to 1) interact with inferior species 2) not kill them or conquer them. Thus it is likely, or plausible, they would select a Klingon who had no honor to tarnish with such a job. And of course some Klingons are without honor, if they just innately all had natural honor then honor itself would have no real value to them.

If you look at Into Darkness solely as a film, then this, The Motion Picture, Generations and Insurrection are definitely worse. You might even be able to argue that The Search for Spock is worse. But as a Star Trek film, Into Darkness is the worst because it's the only one that doesn't offer any interesting ideas, and it's just a mindless action film.

@Dargonhuman
@Dargonhuman 4 жыл бұрын
Because this one tried to do something new and different, it just failed in every way imaginable, and like Sean said, some parts of it were pretty decent, but at least it tried. Into Darkness didn't even try. It was a lazy, nearly identical copy of Wrath of Khan, and the parts that were changed didn't make any sense. Hell, even the parts that were the same didn't make any sense - the reason Wrath of Khan was such a great, powerful and emotionally charged movie was because of Kirk and Khan's history with each other from the TOS episode Space Seed. Since it was Kirk who put Khan's Kooky Khlan on that planet, Khan blames Kirk for everything that happened to them since then, which makes the ensuing conflict far more personal and raises the emotional stakes as well as the political stakes. Adding in Kirk's ex and son turned that up to 11. Khan's appearance in Into Darkness lacked all of that emotional tension, so he was relegated to simply Villain of the Week. Carol was there but she and Kirk were far too young to have a grown child together, so that emotional tension was gone, and at that point, they weren't even together long enough to have the same emotional connection that the OG Kirk and Marcus had in Wrath of Khan. Basically, everything that made Wrath of Khan great was gone in Into Darkness, and they made up for it with some really nonsensical action pieces and more "Pewpew 'splosions". They're both terrible, no doubt, but this one was at least ambitiously terrible where the other was lazy and terrible, which is worse.

This movie, IMO, suffered for several reasons you covered, such as a first-time director, low budget, writer's strike, and poor effects. It also suffered from telling a solo story following three films that were connected in a semi-arc. They tried to continue with Kirk's hatred of Klingons, and ended with "peace" between the Federation and Klingons with the crew drinking with Klingons, but even that was crushed by the next film.

Between Khan and Journey Home you get the full universe of Star Trek. From the darkest more military villain story to a funny light hearted story. So much character development. The original crew of ToS had so much range that none of the later series had.

Look, I’m not defending the Resident Evil movies as ANY kind of art or entertainment (except-debatably-the first installment), and Anderson is quite flawed as a director, but he’s NOT, nor ever WILL be, as bad or cynical a director as Bay is. “Event Horizon,” for all its flaws, still shows off a talent and creative mindset that would have had a lot of potential if he hadn’t gotten bogged down in a dumb franchise at a major studio’s behest. Same with Jovovich-she isn’t the best actress in the world, but she’s shown flashes of talent and brilliance in efforts like “Dazed And Confused” and “The Fifth Element,” and you CAN’T tell me she’s more talentless than Kate Beckinsale or Megan Fox.

As bad as this movie is, it's a guilty pleasure for me as it's a throwback to the Original Series in a way...specifically the mixed bag of season 3. I definitely agree that there is a story here that desperately needed an overhaul at the writing stage and someone willing to tell Shatner that he needs to understand the franchise outside of himself and his own character; Not just referring to Spock and McCoy potentially turning on Kirk to join with Sybok, but with the rest of the TOS crew who previously sacrificed their careers to help him save Spock. I've seen this theory out there that the best way to enjoy this film is that it's Kirk having a fever dream of sorts after feasting on too much Bourbon and Beans, but specifically the alcohol, as it's the only way to explain a lot of the errors in the movie.

Another aspect of the 'Sarek having another son with a Vulcan Princess' that irritated both Roddenberry and fans was the whole Vulcan Princess bit. Vulcan had not had any form of hereditary monarchical government since before the time of the philosopher Surak, the establishment of C'thia (the governing ethic of logic) more than two millennia before.

When it comes to the Klingon general, while he may have fallen out of favor with the High Command, it doesn't change the fact that he is still a General of the Klingon military, he massively outranks the Captain. So him taking over command of the Bird of Prey, still makes a decent amount of sense.

1. From October 14th, 2019, Happy Indigenous Peoples Day, because you're 100% right about Columbus and Columbus Day. 2. About that whole, "what does God need with a starship" thing, while it's a very logical question, if you actually read the Bible, God commands his followers to some very bizarre, or in some cases, flat out evil things. So while it doesn't make any sense for God to need a starship, it's also completely consistent with his character in the Bible.

Exactly. Using the plot hole created by this movie, Starfleet could have rescued Voyager from the Delta Quadrant in mere days or weeks by using the Enterprise route to get to the center of the galaxy, where they could have asked the Cytherians (from TNG) to use their technology to bring Voyager home.

Ah, another terrific video, Sean! And by god, do the budget and script issues show. This...should not have been, Now let's see what you have next time...The Adventures of Ford Fairlane starring Andrew Dice Clay in a starring vehicle, which I have sadly seen & can say is more than deserving of the Golden Raspberry for being a massive, unfunny, poorly-written, tonally confused genre comedy (there were apparently a lot of these at the time, given 1991's winner & another nominee then as well), &... ...Ghosts Can't Do It. ...The elephant will be firmly in the room. We knew it was coming, but we must question if we are truly prepared. I shall pray for you.

Honestly, I think that, out of all the bad movies that were released in 1989, I'm surprised that you didn't mention Wired, a biopic based on John Belushi. In my opinion, that movie makes Star Trek V look like Star Trek II by comparison, and is the worst movie of 1989 for me. If you never heard of Wired, I don't blame you. It's a very, VERY mean-spirited biopic that focuses almost exclusively on John Belushi's drug addiction and makes him out as a stereotypical drug addict, and it was never released on DVD or Blu-ray, only having a brief life on VHS, kinda like Inchon, another movie that you reviewed, except Inchon didn't receive any sort of home video release. It was also notable for being the film debut of Michael Chiklis, who played John Belushi in the film. It's incredibly baffling how Wired was completely overlooked by the Razzies, when it should've had at least one nomination. Had Wired been recognized by the Razzies, it probably would've won a few awards, such as Worst Screenplay (Earl Mac Rauch), Worst Director (Larry Peerce), Worst Supporting Actor (Ray Sharkey as "Angel" Velasquez), and a nomination for Worst Picture. It's kinda lucky how there was no Worst New Star award for 1989 movies, because they probably would've given that award to Michael Chiklis, which would've been a bit mean towards him, as Chiklis arguably has the best performance in the film.

Now realizing so much was cut, I'm wondering what are the deleted scenes look like. Sybok did know about the transporter beams, yet Star Fleet never thought of using them. So it is possible one of the scenes that were cut probably explained it a lot more.
