CLIP DESCRIPTION:
William 'D-Fens' Foster (Michael Douglas) is approached by two Mexican gang members who don't take kindly to strangers.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
It's just not William Foster's (Michael Douglas) day. Laid off from his defense job, Foster gets stuck in the middle of the mother of all traffic jams. Desirous of attending his daughter's birthday party at the home of his ex-wife (Barbara Hershey), Foster abandons his car and begins walking, encountering one urban humiliation after another (the Korean shopkeeper who obstinately refuses to give change is the worst of the batch). He also slowly unravels mentally, finally snapping at a fast-food restaurant that refuses to serve him breakfast because it's "too late." Running amok with an arsenal of weapons at the ready, Foster -- also known as "D-FENS" because of his vanity license plate -- rapidly becomes a source of terror to some, a folk hero to others. It's up to reluctant cop Prendergast (Robert Duvall), on the eve of his retirement, to bring D-FENS down.

Wow, you are truly terrible at reading people. No, it was very strongly implied that the cop was exactly right. Go back and watch it again, in particular, the scene at the plastic surgeon's house. (Staring off into the distance) "And then we'll all sleep together... in the dark... and everything will be fine... just like it was before..." You're meant to be seeing signs of severe instability, and comments like that, well... Warning signs. This is a glimpse into the head of a school shooter.

@Galaxi That's the trick with English, some words have multiple definitions. OP used the word to refer to a sense of sympathy, of relating to him, identifying with him, considering his actions and decisons reasonable. You use the word to refer to familiarity with his character and propensities. They're two different things. I know the character, but I don't relate to him. I can see why he does what he does but I don't identify with his choices, and I don't consider them reasonable. In other words, the more you understand the character, the less you understand him. :D Isn't English fun?

Yes every person has a melting point. It's how much the body can take it, every person's body is different. Sadly, many people don't realize this. If a bunch of person are bullying their co-worker, let's say Michael Douglas here; they keep bullying him, tormenting him, mistreating him, humiliating him, especially when he has other problems to deal with too, it will eventually hit his melting point and will go into a state what many called insanity.

Especially nowadays with the pressures that society puts on us now more than ever over our appearance, our social status, our financial standing. This is an unfair, cruel, and dishonest world that we live in, and this man decided he wasn't going to pretend anymore. He isn't okay, and he's not going to pretend that he is anymore. He's done allowing people to walk all over him. The only difference between him and us is that he actually had the balls to take action. There is something special about this movie, there's something satisfying about seeing him fight back when all he wanted to do was be left alone.

This character and this movie hits hard for me and for a lot of people, there is something deeply special about this film. It hits on something that is uncomfortable for many to talk about. There are a lot of people out there who have been pushed around but are just too nice to push back. Good people get the short end of the stick, and the bad ones get the rewards. This man was one of the very few that decided to push back, enough was enough, and there are people out there right now that are just one bad move away from fighting back, from ending it all. There was something uncomfortably satisfying about seeing this man get revenge on the people that pushed his buttons.

Well written lines, and the sarcastic way that Michael Douglas responds and how he delivers these lines are memorable. He clearly doesn't care about his life anymore, and he doesn't care what people think about how he responds to them either. He's done being nice to bad people, he's not going to be Mr. Nice Guy anymore, and there are people out there right now who are one bad move away from being this guy. This movie may be a dark comedy on the surface, but it really is a deep movie that anyone who's been forgotten can relate to.

Nah, he could get away with beating a few Mexicans. Self defense. Shooting up the burger king, now that was the point of no return.

It really doesn't. He makes it quite clear later on he doesn't care who the bystander is. Innocent or guilty, mexican or white, woe betide anyone that's near this guy when he freaks out. This was just a well-timed freakout, such that nobody could pick up yet just how screwed up he is. @@nadirrabah6756

Alright gonna say it now SPOILERS, just in case anyone is coming around and wants to watch the movie. The actual turning point for William was when he lost rights to his daughter and the America's national defense fired him.

That is the beauty of William Foster. He was like an ordinary guy whose life was ruined. He lost his job and rights to meet with daughter. Any frustrated men in his situation could behave like him after being insulted like in that scene.
