The sequel to the Golden Globe-nominated and AFI Award-winning "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring," "The Two Towers" follows the continuing quest of Frodo (Elijah Wood) and the Fellowship to destroy the One Ring. they stray too far from the book. They're probably ok if you haven't read The Hobbit.

There goes my opinion. The Lord of the Rings were 3 books and 3 movies that perfectly set the plot of Middle Earth. The hobbit is a book that measures half the fellowship of the ring and they stretched it to make 3 movies. They put so much filler and characters that did not appear in the book to make a fan service manual. It is a terrible attempt to imitate the Lord of the Rings, but that is impossible, since the stories are not alike, not even the motivations of the characters. It has infinitely long scenes and empty of content. Since you are watching stories from Middle Earth you can watch them, but don't expect anything like this trilogy.

The Hobbit story is there but it's hidden behind a lot of unnecessary CGI action sequences. It's still good movies, just overdone and kinda weird if you've read the book. There are some really cool scenes in the extended version.

this masterpiece of a trilogy is 20 years old and still holds up visually. Most of the effects in these films are practical including all physical scaled models! the castles, forts, towns, city's are all real just built at multiple different scales depending on the type of shot needed. Even Treebeard was real built from the waist up as a 1:1 scale animatronic. Its rare for films today to still be made like this. The only one I can think of is Bladerunner 2049 (whom the special effects team involved being Weta, also worked on LotR)

10:02 And that is the first time in the history of Middle-Earth that blackpowder has ever been used like this. That is why everyone looks so shocked. They don't know what just happened because they have never seen a bomb explode before.

@@kyandkay3402 The closest they might have seen is Gandalf's fireworks. But even that it not a well-known thing. As far as most of the people of Middle Earth are concerned, fireworks are magic tricks that only wizards can do.

Okay I adore the oval screen above you both. Just sayin' 10:34 Probably not concrete, but simply stone. Still there was some kind of mortar holding it together. You see, this is why gunpowder made castles obsolete. Up until the explosion, the defenders were winning. Yeah, they were taking casualties, but Helm's Deep is a well-designed fortress. The Orcs cannot approach it without falling under arrow fire. It is very hard to get over the walls. And even the attack on the front gate forced them to send a small force, because the bridge to the front gate is so narrow. 15:22 That is the whole thing about castle design--to have lots and lots of places to fall back to, each one costing the enemy a lot. That is why Saruman needed a gigantic force to take on Helm's Deep, which has never fallen in centuries. 16:56 There is this great image in the book--the Ents going up to the gates of Isengard and simply sticking their fingers into the stone like roots cracking rocks over time. 17:43 This whole battle is in effect "Nature fighting back."

I’m sure you’ll get a ton of trivia in the comments but a fun one to start: the riders in these scenes are mostly women in costumes.

Compared to Sauron's tower, Saruman's tower was a joke. Sauron's tower was a mile high and Saruman's was only a little over 160 yards.

Yea The Hobbits a lot of fun and a lot of action but they use CGI a lot instead of the practical effects that the original trilogy spent years in pre-production to create. But the effects are still really good and it's got some crazy battle scenes, especially Movie 3.

The Hobbit in its book form was meant almost as a cartoon book for Tolkien's kids.. it was never meant to be the serious book(s) the LOTR books were. Same for the Hobbit movie(s). I think they arent as bad as some make them out to be. I think you'll need to watch them and make your own minds up.. but watch them and try to watch them and not compare them to LOTR.

The forest that moved to Helm's Deep and finished off the Urakhai were call huorn. Not Ents but rather the trees that the Ents "herd". They can change location and they are a bit.... angry. Like the one that swallowed Merry and Pippin up into its roots until Treebeard stopped it.

One major gripe me and a lot of people had with the hobbit movies is the amount of added scenes that were not even in the book and filler to make it into three movies. To give you an idea the Lord of the Rings books add up to over 1000 pages while the Hobbit was over 300 pages. They did not need to make it into three movies. That said it has some scenes that are worth watching and you will not be as harsh as I was judging them if you did not read the book. So Even rhough I have mixed feelings about the hobbit trilogy I say go ahead and watch them. You will most likely approve.

I really hate that man. I mean Boromir and Faramir's father, Denethor. I've read in comments elsewhere that he wasn't that bad in the books. That he was driven crazy by Sauron through the palandir he has but I hate him in the movies.

@@kyandkay3402 It's a common theme in the story - good people driven to despair, madness, or corruption. It makes it all the more tragic when you think that Saruman was supposed to be the best of the wizards. Denethor was once a strong and good leader for Gondor. Smeagol was just a simple fisherman hobbit. Boromir was a good guy who became tempted by the ring. Theoden was one of the only people who got corrupted, but then was freed.
