FIRST TIME WATCHING The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King | Movie Reaction (Part 2)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Movie Description:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film is the final instalment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Jackson and Fran Walsh, and written by Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Jackson. Continuing the plot of The Two Towers, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are making their final way toward Mount Doom in Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum's true intentions, while Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the rest are joining forces together against Sauron and his legions in Minas Tirith. It was preceded by The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002).
The film features an ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm, and Sean Bean. The Return of the King was financed and distributed by American studio New Line Cinema, but filmed and edited entirely in Jackson's native New Zealand, concurrently with the other two parts of the trilogy. It premiered on 1 December 2003 at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington and was theatrically released on 17 December 2003 in the United States, and on 18 December 2003 in New Zealand. The film was highly acclaimed by both critics and audiences, who considered it to be a landmark in filmmaking and the fantasy film genre. It grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2003 and the second highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release, as well as the highest-grossing film released by New Line Cinema.[5] It was also the highest-grossing film released by parent company Time Warner until it was surpassed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011.
The Return of the King is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.[citation needed] The film received numerous accolades; it won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 76th Academy Awards, where it also won all eleven awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Visual Effects. This remains the most Academy Awards won by a single film, and is the current record for the highest clean sweep at the Oscars. It also became the second sequel to win Best Picture, the first being The Godfather: Part II, and the second film series whose installments have all won Best Visual Effects, after the original Star Wars Trilogy.

The Dead of Dunharrow were the some of the tribes who existed before the Rohirrim arrived, and had sworn oaths to Isildur to come to the Battle of the Last Alliance (the one at the start of Fellowship). In the end, though, Sauron had corrupted them, so they stayed home and retreated into the mountains. Isildur’s curse was terrible- not only would they never find peace in death, but their entire bloodlines dwindled and died out, with each descendant joining the Army of the Dead. They didn’t die out immediately, but you’re seeing the last few generations of a cursed people.

Denethor isn't quite such a bad guy in the books. Yes, his courage utterly fails and becomes a bad father and a bad leader, but he started out as a good guy and a good leader. He was gradually driven to madness and despair. Imagine if you lived across the street from Hell. Every day, you look out your front window and can see the land of pure evil getting stronger and stronger, and then your son is killed. How long could your courage hold? It's a common theme throughout the story: The tragedy of good guys becoming corrupted and turning to evil. Smeagol was just a simple hobbit fisherman before the Ring. Saruman was the greatest of the wizards. Theoden was bewitched by the corrupted Saruman. Boromir tempted by the Ring. Denethor losing all hope. And Frodo, gradually losing his mind to the Ring...

Denethor used the Palantir, which drove him mad.

"Why does he [Denethor] hate him [Faramir] so much?" That is addressed in the books. There was a whole thing, with their mother, and Faramir in his youth, often listened more to Mithrandir, than to his father. Hearkens bck to old rivalries with an upstart hero called Thorongil, who won Denethor's father's respect, more than he ever could. SPOILER ALERT Thorongil was an assumed name Aragorn used when travelling in Gondor and the southern reaches, years before.

There’s a hilarious meme of the Steward eating that tomato 🍅, something along the lines of “They didn’t have to show us that, but they did. We demand acknowledgment of how we all suffered.”

It seems to me that the closer they get to Mount Doom, the more the ring's influence on Frodo grows. The closer they get the stronger the ring gets.

"For every man, there's a horse." Yeah, horses are kinda Rohan's thing. "That is a lot of skulls!" Yeah, am I the only one who wants to know where the rest of those skeletons are? Cuz skulls usually come attached to other bones.

Considering they're catacombs, the bones are probably placed together in rooms, if you want an idea of what i mean google "Paris catacombs"

@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 oh wow! That's interesting! I still maintain, however, that that is A LOT of skulls, and I STILL wanna know where the rest of those skeletons are lol. If it functions the same way as the Paris catacombs, and they have enough skulls for an avalanche, there's A LOT of other bones SOMEWHERE. LOL

@@kateiannacone2698 i don't think people are aware of how many skulls are under Paris, these are the bodies of people from the earliest time Paris existed right upto the Napoleonic era. There are sections of the catacombs which have caved in and are unexplored, there's even a mystery where someone disappeared in one of these unexplored ones, imagine being lost in a maze of bones and probably dying there alone

These extended scenes seem so out of place and forced to me. Directors cuts for a reason. Seems awkward to me after never seeing the directors cut version.
