FIRST TIME WATCHING The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King | Movie Reaction (Part 1)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King Movie Description:
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film is the final instalment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Jackson and Fran Walsh, and written by Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Jackson. Continuing the plot of The Two Towers, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are making their final way toward Mount Doom in Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum's true intentions, while Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the rest are joining forces together against Sauron and his legions in Minas Tirith. It was preceded by The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002).
The film features an ensemble cast including Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Viggo Mortensen, Sean Astin, Cate Blanchett, John Rhys-Davies, Bernard Hill, Billy Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, Orlando Bloom, Hugo Weaving, Miranda Otto, David Wenham, Karl Urban, John Noble, Andy Serkis, Ian Holm, and Sean Bean. The Return of the King was financed and distributed by American studio New Line Cinema, but filmed and edited entirely in Jackson's native New Zealand, concurrently with the other two parts of the trilogy. It premiered on 1 December 2003 at the Embassy Theatre in Wellington and was theatrically released on 17 December 2003 in the United States, and on 18 December 2003 in New Zealand. The film was highly acclaimed by both critics and audiences, who considered it to be a landmark in filmmaking and the fantasy film genre. It grossed $1.1 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing film of 2003 and the second highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release, as well as the highest-grossing film released by New Line Cinema.[5] It was also the highest-grossing film released by parent company Time Warner until it was surpassed by Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2011.
The Return of the King is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential films ever made.[citation needed] The film received numerous accolades; it won the Academy Award for Best Picture at the 76th Academy Awards, where it also won all eleven awards for which it was nominated, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Visual Effects. This remains the most Academy Awards won by a single film, and is the current record for the highest clean sweep at the Oscars. It also became the second sequel to win Best Picture, the first being The Godfather: Part II, and the second film series whose installments have all won Best Visual Effects, after the original Star Wars Trilogy.

So Peter Jackson told Christopher Lee (Saruman) to make a more dramatic "AAAAARGH!!!" Sound when stabbed, and Christopher Lee corrected him about what it sounds like when someone gets stabbed in the back. Because he knows from his experience in the War. Also, Christopher Lee met Tolkien, so there's another fun fact for you.

A litle hint/foreboding from the Two Towers book: `Where then shall I go? ' said Frodo. `Back to the Black Gate and deliver myself up to the guard? What do you know against this place that makes its name so dreadful? ' `Nothing certain,' said Faramir. 'We of Gondor do not ever pass east of the Road in these days, and none of us younger men has ever done so, nor has any of us set foot upon the Mountains of Shadow. Of them we know only old report and the rumour of bygone days. But there is some dark terror that dwells in the passes above Minas Morgul. If Cirith Ungol is named, old men and masters of lore will blanch and fall silent

10:37 "Is that supposed to be like a rock, smashed on the king's head?" It was orcish vandalism, They hewed off the stone head, and replaced it with a crude mockery of the Eye of Mordor.

That explains why he was having that back and forth conversation and "Gollum " said..."You don't have any friends..Thief liat..MURDERER".

LOTR may have really heavy handed dialogue and more details than the average movie goer can handle, but goddamn did Peter Jackson build a freaking world. With some of the most well executed battles in cinema. Truly brought magic to life. Something so rare these days. This guy explains it way better than I can: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aKqFhpVjv9GunGw.html.

You do realize Smeagol was a Hobbit, right? That glowing orb has a long and interesting history. In essence, though, it is a method of seeing far and wide--one of seven that were made ages ago and have mostly all been lost. But Saruman found out, then learned the hard way that Sauron had another. The White Tree is the royal emblem of the Kings of Gondor. I so wish you could have seen the LIghting of the Beacons on the big screen. It was awesome!

Love the reactions you guys. Ive been waiting for these a long time ever since you first posted Fellowship. May i offer some info? The Ringwraiths are not riding dragons. Those are called Fell Beast. You will not see a real dragon until you watch the Hobbit trilogy. Keep it up. Much love.

The scene with Gandalf repelling the Nazgul with light from his staff as the camera tracking behind him continues turning to the right as Minas Tirith comes into view... is in the top 3 scenes of the entire trilogy to me-between it, the lighting of the beacons, and the complete Balrog scene. EPIC!

The cool thing about that shot is that they didn't originally intend to have the city in view. The turning to the right was a malfunction of the rig. But instead of going back and reshooting, they just decided to add Minas Tirith into the background. No green screen, no motion control, none of the traditional tools used to sync camera shots with digital effects or miniatures. Basically, unheard of in big-budget movies. But they did it anyway, and pulled it off beautifully.

I enjoy watching all parts of a single movie in one sitting. Noticing a pattern, will there be three parts again? Can you please make that clear somewhere?

"There's already dragons." If you're referring to the creatures that the nazgul are riding, those are actually not dragons. Those are called Fell Beasts and they are bred by Sauron for his most powerful followers. When Arwen killed their horses at the Ford in Fellowship of the Ring, they were replaced by Fell Beasts. Dragons in middle earth are much bigger, more intelligent, and WAY scarier than Fell Beasts. If you want to check out a Tolkien dragon, you will need to watch and/or read "The Hobbit."

Christopher Lee (Saruman) approved the sound of the knife in Saruman's back because, being a bad-ass in his time, he knew "what it sounds like when you stab someone"...😬
