It’s too hot, there’s 6 fires burning around me, the gas prices are insane, and they tax us for everything they can. But the ONE good thing about CA is no salt on the roads. My ‘94 Pickup is spotless as is my grandma’s’ 95 T100, and Toyota’s are all over the place here. Would definitely recommend buying one out west. Lots of them still kicking

Yikes! Got to the hammer claw going through. That sucks, I'm so glad my frame has been proving to be solid. When I do the 63 swap on my truck I'm thinking I might plate the rear frame arches just as preventative maintenance.

Sidenote: Are you removing the cab and restoring the frame again just like before? Looking forward to the repair videos, as much as it sucks.. But it's just a part of working on these old trucks.

The only thing that makes me not want to plate is that you can’t tell how bad the frame is rusting inside of the plate. I guess I like to see when it’s bad but then it needs fixed right away. That would mean wheeling downtime for you, so plating will keep you on the trail longer.

That rust scaling getting under the POR-15 is why I keep doing treatments with Dinitrol ML every year. It softens up the layer of underseal too and gets under it where it does it's rust stopping thing, as long as the rust hasn't gone too far.
@6thGearGarage
@6thGearGarage Жыл бұрын
I've had good luck with POR15 on new metal that was etched with the POR-15 prep spray, but it seems like going over rust does exactly what you describe, to the point it needs ground down and re-done after 10 years.

The cab of my 1985 Toyota 2wd has rotted floorboards from years of leaking cowl but sits on an otherwise rust free frame. Also some shoddy bondo repair. I found a nearly rust free 1988 cab, on an even cleaner frame. With 8" axle, 4spd transmission, dash and HVAC (also A/C truck), rolls on own 4 wheels, has all steering/suspension components, involved in minor front end collision (no frame damage). No engine, driveshaft, doors, seats and needs front clip. Also has sliding rear window and sunroof And a clear title. All for $150. So in was first going to cab swap onto my 1985, but now going to just register the 1988 and rebuild it using the parts from 1985. As a bonus, the 1985 was originally "cream" (and still indicates on title) but later repainted white. While the 1988 was originally white. So I now technically own 2 80s Toyota trucks. I'm in Georgia and yeah, that rusty frame reminds me of growing up in NY. Vehicles here can be 30yo and look new underneath, just to get crushed anyway *edit I'm not even going to bother POR15 the frame. Not only seeing this was very disappointing, but the original black paint is still good on both my frames. Just like my Jeep, Krylon rust tough semi flat black is perfect match, so will just get repainted with that after a basic wash down. The Toyota is a 2wd street driven truck, not mud etc

My 1993 Yota still has the Ziebart rust proofing I got when we bought the truck new in 1993. The frame still looks pristine and only some spot rusts on the roof of the cab from rocks flying on the freeway and hitting it. I live in Honolulu so not much rust unless a vehicle went into the ocean.

Being a fellow Toyota owner in Wisconsin it hurts to see the frames melting away like that. My 4Runner is pretty decent for the age but will be there soon unfortunately. That's the only thing that sucks about having a boxed in frame yes the frame might be stronger and not Flex as much but in the salt belt where I live I live in New England they try to rot from the inside out like my 2000 Dodge Ram it's got a box in frame from the cab forward and that's where some of the little problems have been the back part of the frame is acorns channel it's perfectly fine I got the same problem I think you're having with this Toyota I think their frames of box in from front to rear and they rushed from the inside out like you said you dirty little Critters and are dropping acorns and everything else next thing you know the trucks eating itself from the inside out the only way like I said spray some oil on the inside the frame

@@6thGearGarage Do you have yearly inspections where you live? I was wondering why there seem to be so many cars here (Finland) from the 80s and still intact despite salt usage. I was wondering if it's because of the yearly inspections. If you want to keep your car on the road here you need that and I realized that on both my cars in the last few years the inspector went under the car with a pointy hammer and nkocked on the frame all over to look for rust spots. And he found a few places too I didn't know about so I had to get that welded before the car would pass. Just made me realize if not for that my car might've rusted apart without me knowing and gone too far to save. So maybe it helps keeps cars from getting too bad.

@@1873Winchester I live in Ohio, where there are no inspections, aside from emissions in some counties. There can be rust holes throughout the vehicle, but of all the lights work properly, then the police will not care. However the next state over is Pennsylvania and they do have annual inspections which will fail a vehicle due to rust holes on the body.
