I BOUGHT The WEIRDEST Ford Coupe Ever Made *The Ford EXP*

I bought the weirdest little coupe Ford ever made, the Ford EXP. Powered by an anemic four cylinder rated at 70HP, mated to a 4 speed manual transmission, the Escort based EXP is one of the slowest "sport coupes" in history. Less than 250,000 were built across the 6 year production run, and 36 years later it's incredibly rare to see one on the road. Fuel injection was added in later years so mine is one of the unlucky few. 0-60 comes in a mind numbing 12.4 seconds, but somehow the car is still fun to drive. Two doors, two seats, two-thousand pounds (and change) of old-school fun.

Gloves: amzn.to/2zbAIFH
Camera: amzn.to/2hS3PKy

Common Questions:
What motorcycle do I ride? A few. Ducati 1198, Honda Fury, Honda Grom, Honda Ruckus
What do I do for a living? Make KZfaq videos and work in enterprise data storage.
Can you wheelie? No, I suck.
Are you fast? Sort of. I suck mostly though.
Where can I keep up with you off the bike?
Instagram: WatchJRGo
Facebook: WatchJRGo (or JRGo, FB hates my branding)
Do you go to school? College, for 2 classes.
Why do you ride so dangerously? What do mean? I was doing 25.
Do you go to the track? Of course, hopefully there will be videos in the future.
Do you play video games? No, but I might stream N64 Goldeneye at some point. Twitch: WatchJRGo
Are you afraid the police will watch your videos and arrest you? Something something evidence something something warrants and due process of law

Jim from all the things he found when he got there you are definitely right. I had a 71 or to Dodge Dart Swinger what I got from a neighbor across the street I was only taking it about 10 or 15 miles to an auto shop class to see what was wrong with it. I got stranded halfway there and luckily my buddy bailed me out, went right to the local discount store and brought a new points and condenser and put just a condenser in. the car ran pretty decent after that and after a little tuning and cleaning the plugs it ran really great. the interior cleaned up pretty good it was fun to drive one of the best $50 or $75 Bergen's I've ever gotten wish I had kept it longer.

Just like all Escorts? First order of business is to change the timing belt. I think the service interval was 40k. A big reason why there are none on the road.

@@Jim-tz9lj Though some of the 4 cylinder engines Ford used were not non-interference, it was only a few years and who knows why. The real reason most escorts are gone is that the rear shock towers rust out.

I had an 82 with 19L and 5speed. Someone had taken the later engine and tranny and put it in. Was fast little car. Very cheap and fun and I think my very heavy foot still got almost 40mph in it. What I hated was the front was just this cheap rubber plastic so it didn't look right. Should have been metal or fiberglass. The exp had a nice removable sunroof that I used to take off all the time. But my LN7 had a much bigger moon roof. Had a friend with the 80s 5.0L tbird. And he couldn't keep up with me. Any road that's not straight that tbird would slide. And on straights they were about the same.

I was a Ford dealer in the 70's thru 90's. Very small town in Texas. I totally remember this car. We got one that Ford forced on us. Couldn't sell it period! Ended being a demo for 2 yrs and finally found a sucker to buy it for probably 1/2 price. Man, the early 80's were the worst years ever for Ford! They built crap! Vehicles would literally fall apart. The 80-81 T-Bird comes to mind. Total piece of crap. Anyway we waited a couple of years for the development of the EXP only to be completely let down when it hit the showrooms. Ford has come a long way since those pitiful days!

@@dantheman1998 If you are talking about the very first Taurus, it was the very first of that modern streamline design that was directly was based off a futuristic concept car that influenced car shapes arround the world. This was a big departure from the 70s where either huge and boxy or that round Euro shaped left over from the 50s and 60s. Just keep in mind that without the Taurus there would be no 80s Thunderbitd the way you know it because that design was influenced by the first Taurus and it also saved Ford from bankruptcy. For that, it gets my respect even though they tend to not be a reliable car. The only thing I have against this car was that it was a symbol of the death of chrome bumpers and accentings on cars. Goodbye Chrome, Hello Plastic.

As others have said, change that timing belt ASAP as a preventative measure. Those silly 1.6-liters were an interference engine, so if the belt goes, the pistons hit the valves and render your classic EXP an expensive experiment in mass dynamics and metallurgy. That's why you don't see 'em on the road anymore.

We push started it in 2nd gear and I just feathered the shifter and rolled the stop signs to get home. Great memories. On the way up to San Francisco there were 3 of us, so we took turns laying in the back every so often. Couldn’t quite make it up the hills on the way up to San Francisco (under powered), but we made it. I hated the car at the time, and I was sorry that I rented it. But we had a good time, despite the discomfort. Great seeing this again, so thanks for posting it. Enjoy it!

Once you go back to the 60s, they tended to be optional, but even then by no means rare. By the time of the early 80s, most cars had both, especially power brakes. It's just a simple vacuum pump.

Don't sell the 1.6 short. My best friend had one in the mid-eighties. His dad was a doctor. He had Crane cams grind a custom bump stick, Hooker bent up a header for it, and the welding school tigged a 2 to 4 barrel carb adapter to the factory aluminum intake, which we then hogged out and mounted a 390 cfm Holley carb. It pegged the 85mph speedo in 2nd gear. Add in the Alpine stereo and the Molly Hatchet mural on the hood, a mullet and an afro,... probably should've stopped while I was ahead. Wish I could find one, though. Ah, the memories.

Me and my brother used an EXP to haul our dirt bikes to the races for 2 yrs. Some of those trips were over 300 miles. The little EXP pulled the trailer without any mechanical breakdowns. The back of the car had enough room for all our gear. We added a set of adjustable air bags to the rear suspension to help with the load. Replaced the EXP with a GMC Jimmy. Jimmy's transmission went out on the first 300 mile trip. When my brother decided to sell the EXP it had around 300'000 miles.

About two months after that, I saw the new owner with his head buried in the engine compartment, lol! It was a cool car when it ran well, and the 84 had a much nicer interior than the 82-83. So that engine was in a lot of fords in the UK it was called a cvh enigne. They came as 1.4l 1.6l 1.8l 2.0l and they also did a 1.6 turbo. If you take the carb off and put a twin choke Webber carb it should do over 100bhp. Also they used to go tight when they got hot. They used to breathe hard and blow off the oil cap. Also cork rocker gasket that leaks. It's also worth noting it's actually has hemispherical combustion chambers so yep it's a hemi. They are really tuneable and would make more that 220bhp.

William Anderson Not to be argumentative but the tires were Michelin “TRX” The wheels had special mounting beads that only TRX tires fit on. The EXP used 365mm (between 14-15”) size. When mine wore out because the junk suspension wouldn’t hold alignment so the inside edges of the tread would be down to the cords, while the outside would have lots of tread left. The first set I needed was $1500 in 1988 (you could buy another entire Escort for that) and when those wore out, it was gonna be even more, because nobody in Wisconsin carried those tires and I would have had to mail order a set. Oh yeah, Mustangs/Capris and T-birds/Cougars used 390mm wheels. They had the same issues with availability...

kirk mullings This is exactly what you do with a cheap rare car. You polish the fuck out of it. Buff the ugly off and you will get offers. Did this in 3 years on a 1989 VW Fox GL wagon. Paid $1600, sold for $4800.

I get that with my '94 Probe SE tuner. What the heck is that?...a what? I'd like to have an EXP in that good of shape. Some tuning and it'd be a ball to burn corners in.

unionrdr The only thing you’re burning with that POS is a hole thru your wallet. I guess I’m showing my age because I clearly remember when these turds were everywhere and nobody cared then!

@@metaljew4456 Ditto. But the kid seems so happy.... And I can't think why? If he wanted a sporty 1982 car, this wouldn't be on any list.

So crazy you saw that Samurai because at the beginning of the video the road trip story first thing I thought about was the samurai I picked up two states away that I had to drive back home and the guy said the same thing ....it should make it

My younger brother, and several friends, had EXP GT's in the late 80's. By the time they got their hands on them, there were several aftermarket pieces and ground effects kits out that could make your EXP look like a mini version of a mustang 5.0; and almost every one I saw had a modified engine. The big seller, though, was the massive space under the hatchback. Perfect for installing a battery bank and lots of speakers. Some of those cars could vibrate down the street better than they could drive down it. For a bunch of kids in college, it was a perfect car to modify and make look fun.
