This OLD KitchenAid K45 stand mixer has seen some better days. It's been passed down through a few different family members and now it's not running right. Speed control only has high speed working and there's a pretty terrible noise coming from the front. In this video we open it up and fix both issues. This mixer is pre-solid state so most of it is like the models sold in stores today but the speed controller is all mechanical electric so we can't just get new parts to fix things. We had to get a little creative, but everything is functioning normally again. Back to making bread!

WD-40 is definitely not good for many reasons. The planetary gear is usually packed with grease. It's also a food grade grease. WD-40 is NOT a lubricant either. You could have spit on the shaft and got the same result. The shaft needs the food grade grease as well. WD-40 is only a water displacement formula. Not a lubricant or penetrant. People misuse it all the time. Regardless, it's poisonous and shouldn't be used. You will probably realize that the sound may eventually come back. If so, next time get some food grade grease. Take it back apart, but this time, remove the screw holding the little gear to the shaft. Remove the shaft and put the grease on it. Pack the planetary gear area about 50-60% full. It would probably be a decade before you would need to again. Replacement of the gearbox grease would be advisable, too.

Pretty sure that the spring from the speed selector lever to speed adjustment plate is either broken or disconnected..it should never have been flopping around like that. Get some food grade grease, take that old guy apart and do a proper maintenance, it will be good for another 20 years

Appreciate the feedback! Others have mentioned the grease too.

The 2 top screws are for your low speed, and the bottom is for high speed,if you adjust the top two while it's running at low speed it should be 60 rpm,and at number 6 adjust the bottom screw to 180 rpm...you should not have to add a spring

Yeah the spring was obviously not part of the design. I was able to get some of the speed control adjusted with just the screws but I think things were just wearing out. There didn’t appear to be enough adjustment in the screws to make a difference. The spring was me thinking out of the box to make it work correctly. I am admittedly not an expert though.

It’s probably the plastic gear that’s worn out and needs replacing

Not a good idea to swap out that screw. The internal spring has come off. Unscrew the motor part off the base (4 scews) and you'll see the problem. Here's a good video that explains this in more detail kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hZOKacWJ2ryypKM.htmlsi=4ljCKGKFfSbXODUE

I’m not going to lie I cringed when you used WD-40. You’ll want to take that planetary and the upper half off and use food grade grease. Even if original formula WD-40 was a lubricant it’s too thin. Depending on use re-greasing should be done at least once every couple of years.

WD is not a lubricant. The WD stands for water displacement not a lub.

@@monseneur00economist which is why I said “even if original WD-40 was”, that implies it is not. Also at the point WD-40 has become a brand name and not just a single product, and the brand WD-40 does include various types of lubricants.
