With Palpatine's Return in Star Wars Episode 9 The Rise of Skywalker, there was a lot of criticism. Many people felt the return of Palpatine in The Rise of Skywalker took away from Vader's/Anakin's redemption in Star Wars Episode 6 Return of the Jedi. Vader/Anakin turned back to the light side and killed Palpatine in the process. In this video, I explain why Palpatine's Return Did Not Ruin Vader's/Anakin's Sacrifice

While I do think it was a bit lazy to bring back Palpatine, it doesn't change the fact that Vader chose his family over the dark side and saved his son, it didn't matter whether or not Palpatine was killed or not.

@@CometStar100 But according to author, fans loved the Dark Empire story. Also, yeah it's on record that Lucas wanted Emperor to come back. v "We had great response. I still get letters from people telling me that Dark Empire was the best of the continuing stories, that it should be made into a movie, that it should be a novel, etc," he told UnderGroundOnline, a now-defunct pop-culture website. "George Lucas told me personally that he loved it... "Some people had a problem with the bringing back of the Emperor. But as I have explained elsewhere, we did that under George Lucas' direction. Originally we asked him if we could bring back Darth Vader, assuming that the Empire would want to perpetuate the image of Vader in order to strike fear into the hearts of billions. So they would put somebody else inside the Vader costume, of course. I love how Vader’s selfless act ended up being the reason why Palpatine lost once again in the battle of Exegol. Anakin sacrificed himself to save his son from being tortured to death by his wicked master allowing the family he thought was lost to live. Luke gave his life to save his sister and teach his nephew a lesson inspiring a new hope among the Resistance and the galaxy giving them the courage to answer Landos call and face the Final Order. Leia gave her life to call out to her son one last time pulling him back to the light and giving him the chance to come to terms with himself and his father. And it is Ben who gave his life to save the woman he loves from giving up her identity to her grandfather plunging the galaxy in eternal darkness and even death itself. This eventually allowed Rey to conquer her inner demons and vanquish Palpatine once and for all before adopting the name Skywalker for herself and honoring the family that came before. Immortalizing the name in the future while Palpatine and the Sith fade away in the past. Everything that lead to the Phantom Emperors defeat was because of the Skywalker family’s selfless sacrifice. Each family member at the peak of their character committed a selfless act of compassion for the sake of others they care about causing a chain reaction that started with Anakin and finished with Ben that cultivated in the death of Palpatine and the Sith along with the rebirth of the new Jedi Rey Skywalker. The Skywalker family won by saving what they love.

And it should have ended that story as there was no room for 7,8,9 after that. Luke throwing down his lightsaber was the culmination of 6 movies and the first time Palpatine’s plan did not work. It turned out to be his downfall as Luke even said about his overconfidence. So when they bring back Palpatine in Episode 9, it undoes everything in ROTJ and the Saga. That’s why there was no need for 7,8,9.

The ST ended up rebooting that same narrative with The Emperor/Kylo/Rey/Resistance/First Order, so that's why it wasn't needed. There were more stories to tell about Luke, Leia and Han and their kids after ROTJ, but Disney literally chose to tell the SAME story.

Palpatine admits to Kylo that he had died before in TROS, So Anakin did fulfill the prophecy by killing the Emperor and bringing balance to the Force, not only that but sacrifice his own life so his Son could live. Only Balance to the force though, other conflicts would continue to persist as we see in The Mandalorian. The Palpatine we see in TROS is just a shallow husk of what he once was, the so called eternal emperor who is only kept alive by machines. It isn’t until he drains Rey and Ben of their energy that he becomes a stronger husk, however his body was still fragile enough to be disintegrated by his own lightning.

Yeah, George Lucas would contradict what he previously said and then state it was his plan along. The biggest problem with Lucas is how he loves to change his opinions whenever he feels like it or doesn't care enough. His ideas of the Sequel Trilogy wasn't anything more than a collection of random ideas that could change whenever he thought something else including making Leia the real chosen one and other things.

They both die, the 2 orders finally were destroyed, and so the Galaxy was in balance for the first time in decades, no more "guardians of the force" (the Jedi) or "owners of the force" (the Sith), and then the last Skywalker rises upon and saves the one he loves Ben solo realized that he isn't the one that has to return, he have made a lot of damage to the Galaxy, so he brings back Rey in order to keep the balance, his selfless act bring the balance to the force by letting Rey stay alive, by a certain point of view, Ben Solo has indeed the Chosen One, he finished what his grandfather started, he was able to avoid dead, he faced his sins and return to his true self and became the youngest force user that become one with the force Idk it's how I see it I really love your videos!!!

6:24 the prophecy was about him destroying the Sith forever, it was about Anakin dismantling the dogma of the Jedi and Vader destroying the legacy of the Sith

Anakin did fulfil the prophecy because the Sith were gone from the Galaxy forever, after Anakin killed Palpatine. Palpatine and the Sith never returned to the Galaxy and were hidden in the unknown regions (which is technically apart of the Galaxy but is also not really). Rey merely maintained the Balance by defeating Palpatine for good.

The nature of prophecy is that someone saw a glimpse of the future and can convey glimpses, pieces or forms of it which other people can then be on the lookout for. They will not recognize the events when they begin to unfold unless they are aware, and also unless they are guided to recognize them by the same source of the prophecy. A prophecy may impact few people as opposed to having a universal or gand scale impact. Most prophecies do not involve the end times or final conflict, and they do not rob those involved in them of free will. In fact, most examples of prophecies we have in literature are brought about by those who, lacking faith, make choices in order to avert them. The prophecy does not take away your choice, it is a prophecy of what you will ultimately choose. Prophecies in reality, as opposed to those created for fiction, are even more subjective, so it doesn't make sense to say that it categorically means that a particular thing is impossible. What I mean is that just because a Jedi who was tapped into the Force received a vision or prophecy that one chosen by the Force would bring "balance" to the Force and "destroy" the Sith, words that have a variety of interpretations, does not inherently imply that this is an end all, be all prophecy. The story never precludes that the Jedi do not have a collection of hundreds of different prophecies that did not warrant mention in the narrative because no elements of them seemed to relate to the times at hand. The prophecy is only referred to, and never read out directly from the records by the receiver who recorded it. It may even be two separate prophecies: destroying the sith and bringing balance to the Force. You could even say that the Force was unbalanced because the Jedi were in power and the Sith (however many of them existed is unknown) were in hiding somewhere in the galaxy, and that the chosen one had to end the dominance of the Jedi. He really balanced the Force by the end of Revenge of the Sith because we only know of two Sith lords at that point, and only a handful at most of Jedi. Does it matter that the one Sith lord is ruler of the galaxy and his apprentice is his right hand man? Did politics ever play into this balance idea? Does the Force care able that? The events of that film unquestionably balanced out the sheer numbers. After Palpatine was in power, he did not make a school of the Sith or propagate Sithism in any way that we know. As to the destruction of the Sith, did the prophecy mean the entire Sith order or a particular Sith? Either way, it took 30 years, but Anakin both destroyed the principal Sith and the Sith order at the time by destroying Palpatine and himself in one action. As long as either of these are the "Sith" intended by the prophecy, then the prophecy is complete in ROTJ. I don't recall a clause that continued, "And the Sith shall never rise again," but then again, they never read the actual prophecy onscreen to allow us an interpretation of it. Now if the prophecy had reference to, for instance, a Sith recruitment plan that by which Palpatine was identifying and training dark force users in the hopes of finding a worthy apprentice, and this was spreading the seeds of the Sith somewhere off screen, which was put down as soon as Palpatine and Vader were secured in power, then this -portion of the prophecy can also be said to have been fulfilled at the end of ROTS. This is a fantasy world which, like the real one, is open to interpretation and is an evolving story, and as the original author, George Lucas, was writing the stories, he was evolving and retconning what came before, and so also are we entitled to do as far as our understanding in concerned.

Yoda did hint that the Chosen One prophecy was misinterpreted a bit too Jedi-biased. There is also a Sith'ari Prophecy (Sith Biased Chosen One Prophecy). The Chosen One's purpose is to bring balance to the Force. By toppling Sidious, the Galactic Empire fell relegating Sidious to relying on the Sith Eternal Cult (Sidious is vulnerable in his clone body).

It wasn’t a given Vader still had to make that choice. I even think George’s plan for his sequels were or one of his ideas where delving deeper into the destiny thing. I like the chosen one prophecy because it closes the book. The Sith will not come back there story is over. In my opinion instead of the Sith coming back they could have shown a different group with Snoke and Kylo that use the dark side or if they bring Palps back then they should have shown a part of his character we haven’t seen before instead of using him just like in ROTJ

Interesting attempt at trying to reconcile the Chosen One prophecy. Palpatine actually wanted to take Rey's body as his own in a bid to live forever, so he was definitely still committed to his narcissistic power fantasy. What he meant by being "all the Sith" still isn't really clear, but we know at least this much from the novelization, the databank, and The Star Wars Book.

Wonderful video, lots of good points. I love Palpatine's return in TROS, its super cool and continues threads from the Prequels (cloning and Palpatine's discussion with Anakin about saving people from death--dark force abilities). Recent StarWars reference books suggest Leia was going to be "The Chosen One" in the sequels as per George Lucas. I think its like anything, different prophecies arise in different time-periods and contexts. Anakin was the Chosen One for a particular point in time, but that doesn't mean that there can never be another Chosen One for a new context/situation/time period.

A big issue I have with the Sequels is how Ben Solo turned dark. He's seen worshipping Vader's helmut. But if Anakin returned to the light by defeating the Emperor, then there should have been no "dark" influence on Ben Solo, since he would have only been exposed to the Anakin Skywalker force ghost. It just didn't work for me.

I don’t love Palpatine coming back in TROS but ultimately I was able to shrug it off because I didn’t really see the point in getting upset about it. Plus I think that there were hints of him possibly coming back in the prequel’s when he says to Anakin in the opera scene “The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural” and he says the exact same thing to Kylo Ren on Exegol when they first meet. Not to mention him talking about “cheating death” when Anakin turns to the dark side. Granted they obviously could’ve handled this much better and give better clarity on how it happened but I think the seeds for his return were planted a long time ago. I also don’t like the chosen one prophecy for the reasons you mentioned and the fact that people are blaming the sequel trilogy for ruining it I think need to question George Lucas‘s decision to put that in place because I knew a long time ago any new Star Wars movies after that would cause it to be really messy. And I think for the reasons you mentioned it was Anakin‘s legacy that ultimately defeated the Emperor including Ben Solo since he was able to save the woman he loved which Anakin failed to do with Padmé.

4:50 Thank you for saying this. I really dislike the Chosen one prophecy because the idea of Anakin being destined to bring balance to the force hurts his development. I wish they could at least not give a definitive answer, but not only George Lucas said, we also have a lot of canon content solidifying Anakin as the Chosen one Looking back on the Episode I, the prophecy (and the midichlorians) was used just as a plot device to make Qui-Gon take Anakin to training even against the wishes of the council. It was part of a mess that required a lot of extra content to work more in the lore and still changes the perception on Anakin's character. Great video!

And a way I love to Look at it is that if anakin's sacrifice really is render meaningless (it isn't I'll explain) that means then Luke himself no longer serves a purpose in the story as a whole. There's no point in finding the map or anything after his redemption. BUT luke IS still essential to the story he redefines once again what it means to be a jedi only this time with vastly more knowledge. HE embraces his legend and uses the lightsaber that carried so much of that darkness. Luke ANAKIN'S SON was still needed regardless of how you feel about his protrayal in TLJ.

It's important to remember the "Chosen One" was more of a plot device specific to the prequels. I've heard arguments that the whole prophecy was kind of unneeded/cliche. In the context of ROTJ, Palpatine's main function is to be the embodiment of the Empire and the devil on Anakin's shoulders. Can you say Palpatine returning ruined the effort the Rebels made to overthrow tyranny? I mean, I think the fact the Empire is essentially back in the first place as the First Order is more of an argument for that. But not when it comes to Vader/Anakin. The point is that Anakin chooses the people he cares about over the dark side/power and commits a selfless act; saving his son at the cost of his own life If you factor in the prequels, there's also another element that makes this as it is satisfying despite Palpatine's return: Palpatine has been the abusive father figure and manipulated Anakin into ruining his own life. So there's additional catharsis that Anakin throws the most negative influence in his life down a shaft

So one question how come you think luke in the sequels makes sense when you clearly see his whole character wouldn’t go down the path he did wanting to even considering murdering his own nephew in his sleep basically starting the very events of the sequels by doing just that, going against the character that was established movies ago Also the empire was still around after the second death start explosion, if the emperor survived then he still have a empire to go back to and the main reason the empire was dismantled was because palatine was dead but as we all know he was alive meaning he could have maintained his power in the galaxy so why would he just up and leave his already powerful empire leaving it to be destroyed instead of just showing he wasn’t dead and that he is still in control so his empire wouldn’t be destroyed it would be even stronger given they still have their emperor Also you missing the point of the chosen one prophecy and that is it’s not predestined to happen, a prophecy is a possible/likely future not a fated one, fate and destiny are 2 different things, that being said Anakin is said to be the only own capable of destroying the sith but that doesn’t mean he will, that’s the key here both obi won and yoda thought vader couldn’t be the chosen one and thought luke was, in fact GL Himself said he wanted to make luke the chosen one in his original script but in that script he wanted the chosen one to fall to darkness in whcih luke would have fallen, but he was like I already got Anakin his father so why not use him and that when he made Anakin the chosen one, but the fact remains GL was setting everything up to be that without luke seeing the good in vader, vader would have never came back to the light, the chosen one prophecy GL actually stated both luke and Anakin are need to even forfill it so, it’s based on the fact luke chosen to save his father and the fact vader did in fact actually did hate his son at points yet still he chose to save him, the ultimate point of the chosen one prophecy is that attachments are what save us from darkness not condemn us, but they have to be well founded otherwise luke would have died and vader would still be a slave, meaning the chosen one prophecy is based in the fact Anakin the one who had attachment’s was the one who destroyed the sith The problem with palatine coming back is that the force literally made Anakin to bring balance and as GL said that balance can be maintained by keeping the darkness at bay that being the sith need to be tamed/destroy given their rise to power is to great, but the fact is the force failed because Anakin didn’t destroy the sith therefore they never lost power making the birth of Anakin and Luke’s arcs pointless instead they make rey the destroyer the sith making her the new chosen one if you will, she took Anakin’s role and it doesn’t make sense or even add up to the lore, yet she took on the role of destroying the sith something the prophecy said only the chosen one could do, Plus the main reason people call rey a Mary Sue is because she is more powerful then a non trained anakin or even a 10 year trained anakin when she has next to little even when compared to even luke meaning her power level and abilities don’t make sense because if the chosen one couldn’t do it without learning it neither should she, but she does

Great video and you're saying a lot of the things that I've always thought when I've heard this argument. One thing though, I did like the return of Palpatine. It made the saga coherent to me. I grew-up with the release of the OT and the prequels never really felt like Star Wars to me. However, there were these beats scattered throughout the sequels that tied the prequels into a series that did feel like Star Wars to me. The Emperor's return was the cherry on top. Having the Emperor, and Rey be his granddaughter, tied everything together. After reigning for over twenty years he uses his death to retreat into the shadows (as is the Sith nature at this time) and reconstitute himself, the Sith tradition, and his forces. Not to mention cloning has been a major part of Star Wars and its lore since the very first movie in '77...

I do agree that anakin's sacrifice and legacy isn't ruined, though If I may add a critique that could've helped the movie it's just this one thing, general story stays the same just minus Rey's blood connection. I do like that she essential "sticks it" to palpatine by adopting the name, but I feel narratively and character wise it would have more emotional weight if there was no connection and anakin's name would mean MUCH more than it already does. The actual REBIRTH of the name rather than just a renouncement of family for a real one. Don't get me wrong that still the message of the movie. I just think knowing the past darkness in the family particularly with anakin that means more thematically.

I 100% agree about the choosen one. While I don't hate that much this types of story, it's a bad idea have a prophecy that determinates that the hero is gonna win, since it takes away my need to invest in the story or the character arc . In the case of Anakin, why should I be concern about him becoming Vader if it was already determinate that he will kill palpatine? Why should I be invest in the moment where Anakin choose to save Luke if his choice is gonna happen because of prophecy? Here's exemple of this type of story done right : In one of my favorite cartoons of all time, Avatar the last airbender, Aang's destiny is to become the Avatar and fight against the Firelord Ozai. It's never said that he is gonna win nor that after this fight there would be peace forever. The focus of the conflict is what he is gonna do when finally meets the Firelord, Is he going to kill him? Or he will be able to preserve his values and find another way? In the end he is able to do the second option because he choose this path. "CHOOSE" the key word. It is the hero's struggle and the choices he make by his own free will that makes his moments in the story so impactfull and inspring.

In truth sequels happen over a one year period practically so small on the timeline map that if your were to skip not much really has changed

Great analysis. Star Wars is not a fairy tale. Evil can, and will always, return if the next generations don’t conserve and maintain what was given to them. That is whole overarching theme of the sequels. How is balance maintained after balance is restored? Palpatine returning is completely justified, and represents a cohesive line in the Skywalker Saga by showing that the same evils can return if left unchecked. And, therefore, Rey and Ben as a dyad in the Force thematically represents the mechanism of balance needed, a Skywalker and Palpatine, required to maintain balance after balance was achieved by Anakin.

Personally i like palps returning but anyway my interpretatation.... Anakin killed Palpatine in return of the Jedi fulfilling the prophecy and bringing the force back into balance but palpatine cheated death and also cheated the force. So Palpatine inhabiting a clone was not supposed to happen Anakin brought balance to the force but Palpatine was able to undo this balance through unnatural means

I don’t know… The Emperor’s death in Return of the Jedi is perfect. He thought he was invincible, or better yet he thought the EVIL he represented was invincible. Yet he was caught by surprise and killed by the simplest, merely physical attack. A pure act of love by the one person who suffered the most because of his cruelty, and the one person Sidious thought was no longer capable of purity or love anymore. The one person he saw as the key proof of his theory, that Evil is inevitable and inescapable, that everyone and everything will belong to it in the end. But Luke and Anakin Skywalker rose up, and said, hell, they CRIED… no. And by that “no”, more than by mere brute force, the Dark Lord and everything he stood for were destroyed. His defeat was just as inevitable and inescapable as he thought he himself was. The Sith’s “One Ring” was cast into the fire that day. There’s no coming back from that. So no, I wouldn’t talk about ruining Anakin’s sacrifice. More like diminishing the magnitude of that ending as a whole. Of the defeat that the Sith and their evil suffered on the Death Star II. Not to mention that, to make the whole thing make sense, they had to invent the totally nonsensical detail that Sidious felt the light awakening within Vader beforehand, and therefore was ready with his body transfer sh*t. This does not make any sense. Sidious could not understand light, nor hope, nor love. This “selective stupidity” of his was his fatal flaw, the one blind spot his godlike foresight could not reach. He totally did not expect Anakin to turn on him out of love, and that is why he lost.

"The rebellion's victory is for nothing now!" Well, I guess we can say by that logic, the allies' victory against the imperial germans was for nothing. Because the nazis rose from the ashes of whatever resources the German empire had.

I don't like the chosen one propechy anyway so I don't really care. My problem was the fact they brought Palpatine back and the way they did it was horrible. I hate when movies make you read extra material to understand what happened in their movie which was my biggest problem with the prequels.
