I often hear people say "my plan is to become a tattoo artist and piercer! I can't wait to do both!" And I'm not going to lie, it always makes me cringe a little. I feel like many folks don't understand just how much work goes into learning to do just one of these skills, let alone both of them. And to do them well. In this video, I sit down to explain why these skills are more different than you may realize, and tell the story of what outcomes I usually see when folks try to learn both at once.

ohhhhhh what a spicy topic! someone who does both is a red flag for me tbh. my first piercer was a tattoo artist doing piercings on the side and you could tell they did not care for piercings and only did it for the money (that and using low quality jewelry and doing everything wrong lmao)

Not to mention tattoo artists having to know needles, types of ink, about their machines etc! It’s a lot to master.

Such a struggle picking between the two! I love all forms of body modification, but I have to agree they both deserve the same amount of time, attention, and most importantly respect. I want to be a good student.

14:08 I think my piercer went I to a tattoo apprenticeship for a bit but she had already been piercing for YEARS at that point

Idk how I feel about this, I’ve been piercing for 12-13 years. I just now started an apprenticeship for tattooing. Both have their own skill set yes, I will always pierce more than tattoo cause that’s my preference. I do enjoy tattooing but that doesn’t mean I can’t to both you can have the knowledge in both and still do great doing both. I use high quality jewelry and tattoo supplies. I don’t wanna start an argument this is just my take but I consider anatomy for both piercings and tattoos but to say you can’t do both is kinda crappy just don’t do it with no knowledge. They both deserve time but it’s possible.

But notice- you’ve been piercing for 12-13 years and only now are starting to tattoo. You lasted one craft and gave that your time and attention and passion and did it long enough to become stability proficient. As I mention in the video if you are going to attempt to do both this is the way to go about it! This video was mostly directed at folks who are saying they want to apprentice for both and learn both simultaneously, or very early on in their careers together. I see so many people who have been piercing for maybe 2-3 years who have a weak grasp on anatomy and placement say “I’m learning to tattoo now!” When they haven’t even become proficient at piercing yet. And I see tattoo artists who do the same. It’s incredibly unfortunate because it’s the clients who pay for this, usually with their bodies.

I was getting a tattoo a month ago and this other guy tattooing was running the front desk and did 3 separate piercings while working on a tattoo. I was so glad I wasn’t having him work on me.

The owner of my shop is a tattoo artist. The previous piercer didn't want anything to do with quality jewelry, orders, sterilization, packaging... she basically just showed up to do the piercing. The owner/tattoo artist as a result ended up doing most of the "jewelry" things. The artist found a passion and love for the jewelry side of things. We now call her our "jewelry specialist" and having her have the passion and knowledge she has for jewelry is such an asset. I call her a unicorn 😂❤

Point well taken. What I would be curious for though, is if someone out there has the aesthetic/design skills to come up with clever/beautiful piercing -tattoo combinations. For example on the ear, navel, etc.

0:32 I can understand learning piercing as a way to get into the industry. However I don’t understand the mindset of “oh I don’t care I just wanna do something else”. If that’s not what you want to do, why are you doing and learning it? Like a respect for the art and skill I think should be there and you should be doing it cuz you love it. Even if you’re using it as a stepping stone, it’s still an important part of body mods and should be loved and respected by everyone doing it.

How do you feel about tattoo Sammy? Who was a tattoo artist but also created barbells and pierced his wife’s tounge and nipples?

@@themainman145 I don’t think we can compare folks like Sammy and Sailor Sid to modern times. The industry has changed too much in the last 20-30 years. We have whole piercings that exist now that didn’t when tattoo Sammy was alive.
