You’re both missing the mark. He’s a Neuropsychologist. It’s between the two. Their job is very different from other mental health professionals. The most helpful assessments I ever had with the VA were with neuropsych, when I first got out of the service. I wish they regularly had them work with their psychologists and psychiatrists, it would save a lot of vets a lot of suffering, instead of putting people on all the wrong psychiatric medications.

@Amanda Charlebois agreed. The biggest trouble is when people don’t have the imbalance required for medications to be effective. Then there are tons of adverse reactions that can be worse than what they suffer from already. And those that have underlying neurological issues that cause the problems, just throwing meds to change the brain chemistry at them is both dangerous and ineffective. Like the guy in this video.

@@ma4146 psychological is the concept of the mind and human perspective. It is how the person thinks. Physiological is the physical aspect. As much as you can see the damage done in the brain, the cause can be traced back to relationship experiences, beginning in infancy. The brain is shaped experientially. A serve and return between infant and caregiver and continued shaping through the lifespan. My concern with moving towards a brain disease, is transferring accountability off the individual. The individual needs to do the work to strengthen the compromised areas of the brain.

No it’s not Mental illness is a chemical imbalance of the brain ! When someone is sick as I have a mental illness but come from a family of doctors know from my own research that under an MRI the brain when sick lights up differently under MRI as a CHEMICAL IMBALANCE !!! All you people are so wrong about mental illness being part of some family structure garbage !! And the reason is mental illness affects anyone anytime in and from any social status DUMMY ! Your accountability argument is such trash ! And it’s why people like you should never be allowed a position of decision making in this world over people who have mental illness ! One big thing I would like to know ACCOUNTABILITY For what ? Huh what the media’s portrayal that is unfactual of mental illness ? A lot of the mentally ill while sick don’t actually do a great deal of harm that’s media rubbish jammed down your throat ! Must who murder are not mentally ill but use the system to say they are for a lighter sentence , people who go on mass killing sprees are actually not mentally ill as most of those massive killing sprees take planning and lots of it ITS pre-meditated . I really hope you actually do some real research DAWN before you criticise the mentally ill for being unwell as their FAULT and lock them up etc.... your philosophy is about 100 years ancient !

I was recently hospitalized inpatient, the doctor there REFUSED to TREAT ME because 2 of my medications is adult medication, all the other meds she talked about are ones that I had extreme reactions and led to even more hospitalizations in the past. She told me rather to be moved to a different hospital or be discharged. I was so baffled, that I was recused help as a 16 year old with extreme mental illness, my meds work and I fell back down because I wasn't taking them and I was struggling with quitting my job and school, she refused to treat me while I came in with self harm wounds through fat, all because she didn't agree sith two of my medications.

Neurological problems have caused mental health problems for years. I know first hand about that. I had a accident on the baseball field a age 15. I was hit it in the head by pitch. We didn't know for 3 to 4 years. But there were unexplained mental health problems through out those years. But I got lucky and eventually changed doctors and got a doctor who was a both a neurologist and a physicist and she went deeper and found that I had a Head Injury and other possible blows to the head. But in a side note, there has been a lot of people who have mental health problems that have never had a substance abuse problem or never been in trouble with the law and it seems like they never are talked about or even noticed. This needs to STOP. People who want help shouldn't have to beg for it. I really like Dr. Phil but he is really dropping the ball on this one too.

Brain scans alone cannot be used to diagnose a mental disorder, such as autism, anxiety, depression, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder. In some cases, a brain scan might be used to rule out other medical illnesses, such as a tumor, that could cause symptoms similar to a mental disorder, such as depression.

They are wrong I know it. I need to discuss my issue with a medical expert like I have just seen here. The cost is so expensive to see these guys privately. I would do whatever it took to be seen properly all over the brain, whatever tests need to be done. I could raise the money to fly over. If somebody from the show sees this please get in touch. I'm 40 years suffering and its taken 1/4 of my life away with sick days and not being able to do normal things my siblings take for granted.

Its good to look at it... but showing the patient how fuked up it is (visually) might give them a lot of anxiety. Maybe just tell them what to do to fix it cuz ur seeing ur brain that fuked up would be quite scary I imagine

the truth hurts, but if they aren't showing and explaining this to those suffering with addiction in rehab then i dont what we're doing. clearly, kindly, stated and the doctor even left the guest with hope that if he USES HIS BRAIN it will get better.

Dear Dr. Phil: I suffered brain damage as a child. Now in my 60's I'm a dyslexic, transgendered, transvestite. I'm a man who thinks he's a woman, but because I'm so severely dyslexic I dress up and I behave like a man. Would you consider bringing me on your show?

@Rchl Swtzr Real trans people are their preferred genders. Its basically mental intersex. A person can have both male and female parts, but a person can also develop the wrong hormones for the wrong body in the womb. There are people who get confused who aren't actually trans, so that's why going to a professional is best.

His brain scan reminds me of a brain being destroyed by dementia. It deteriorates and eats away at it. It’s terrifying. He’s just a kid, this is awful.
