Don't be embarrassed about smoking Carter Hall. Be proud to smoke it. It's a classic. It's all about what you like. Who cares about how much you paid for it. I have smoked a lot of tobacco. I have found that price and status mean nothing most of the time. The drug store blends are just as good, and sometimes better than the fancy popular stuff. I smoke all the otc's regularly. I smoke them more than anything else. So do a lot of other guys. No need to be embarrassed.

Smoking it as I'm writing this. Got to share. I thought I had tamped down too hard when I got down the last quarter of my cob. I set the pipe and let cool. Just relit and brother, the smoke was sweet and creamy with a brownie note. Also noticed that the pipe didn't overheat and the smoke kept going. One thing I notice about OTCs is that the pipe needs to be thoroughly cleaned before smoking them. I use a plumber's brush to clean out the bowl. Then I'll wash the stem and run a bristle pipe cleaner through it and the air hole. Next a q-tip to clean the chamber and wipe out any excess in the bowl. Once I dried out Carter Hall and crushed it down slightly, it brought out all the flavors. Better than expected. Happy smoking, everyone.

I've got that same pipe - the first pipe I bought almost 30 years ago. I've burned it out but repaired it with activated charcoal mixed into plaster. You'd never know and it still smokes great today. Also CH is my everyday pipe tobacco. I love it.

I have fallen in love with Carter Hall after tolerating Captain Black. I really enjoy it, much more than any Cavendish I've smoked. At least, I enjoy it more than any of the tobacco that I've smoked here recently. Thank you for your inspiration and your stories of your journey in pipe smoking.

Miss Matches…with that said, I was never one to shy away from codger blends BECAUSE of this man. Early on, the first few years of my pipe smoking journey, I tried to pick up the fancier blends and rarely smoked the codger blends. But the more I watched guys like Matches860, Eric the Blue collar pipe smoker, or even Artful Codger, I started to realize that sometimes simpler, relaxing, familiar smokes can provide some of the most satisfying smokes. And now codger blends are constantly on my rotation.

And thank you for making these videos; they're a huge service to the community. Unfortunately, the only OTC that I can find locally is good ol' Prince Albert, unless I'm not looking hard enough. I love Prince Albert tobacco; very nutty and coco-ish. NEVER be embarrassed for smoking one of the great OTC blends. What would pipes be without tobacco, except for another piece of heritage, lost to the winds of "change". Keep up the great work.

Nice review John ! Carter Hall and Dr.Grabow pipes are like you said "American Classics". I'm actually smoking some Carter Hall as i type in one of my old Frank Medico pipes. I do have a large collection of old Dr.Grabow, Kaywoodies, KBB Yello Boles and Frank Medico pipes and all have seen many bowls of Carter Hall among other OTCs as well . One of my favorite smokes is to get a tub of Carter Hall ( i prefer the tubs as i think the tobacco is better in them for some reason ) and then mix in about 20% maduro cigar leaf . Let it sit for about three days and MAN OH MAN is it a great smoke!

I just picked up my first box of this and have to say it grows on you. The simplicity I think is where it really shines. I've heard a few other ytpc reviewers say that the alcohol is extremely strong when you open the pouch and it's upfront and in your face- however I really had to search on mine to find it. To me it was a very mellow, pleasing, light chocolate, non-cig smell [heard that too] blend that definitely will be worked into my rotation. My only complaint was that while it burns very cool smoke wise, it burns extremely quickly. Comparitively I usually get about 45-60 mins per bowl of other burley blends, this was at 30 mins. Aside from that I think it wouod be great with some age where it could develop some more of the deeper chocolate notes that come naturally from the burley. I will certainly be stashing a few boxes away and try them at 5yrs, 10yrs, and 15 and see how it develops with some age. At $5 a pouch you really can't go wrong throwing some on the shelf to see how it develops.

I get chocolate in the Carter Hall tin note for sure, and I think I taste it every once in a while when retrohailing, but I get more of a cedar note than a chocolate when smoking. I really do love the brand. I don't think what a tobacco costs matters... you just have to ask, "do I enjoy it". I like a lot of the more expensive tobaccos too, but something like Lane 1-Q, Carter Hall, and Peter Stokkebye PS24 Noughat really hit the spot more often than not. I have several cogers in my rotation, too.

As a newbie and as per your suggestion I added this to my rotation. All I can say is that months later it is my favorite so far and always my go to. Cheers, Matches! BTW, we love your videos outside!

today is my first day into the hobby and i picked this little carter hall box up for 2.77$ and its my first smoke ever out of a traditional pipe. Well, traditional looking cause its a cheap chinese Jimbah pipe from the gas station just to experiment with. I obviously need to upgrade on the pipe but the carter hall, I like it. I'm already loving the hobby itself, so many things to know, especially as a fan of tobacco. good video man

Dead on review ! Glad to see there are other pipe smokers out there beside myself that still appreciate the codger blends. Yes i admit most codgers arent as good as they were as 40 to 50 years ago but there are some. Carter Hall is one of them , always liked it. You mentioned Edgeworth, Hearth and Home makes a blend called Classic Burley Kake, i would love to see you do a review on it. You would also like the blend its very good with notes of cocoa, rum, and anise. Keep on piping brother of the briar !

I started pipe smoking about 3 years ago with otc blends and a corn cob and a dr.grabow. sense then though your videos you have introduced me to C&d blends, savinelli pipes (witch are my favorite) have 8 now. And counting lol. So I watched this video and realized I somehow never got around to trying Carter hall. Now I know I don't have a big collection of tobaccos, couple dozen. But honestly... this in a corn cob is in my top 5. Thanks for the vids and the tips.

my grandfather smoked Carter Hall. The smell of his tobacco was one of my favorite childhood aromas. I decided to take up pipe smoking because of him. Unfortunately he got rid of all his old pipes when he gave up smoking about 10 years ago due to health issues. Kind of wish i had told him i would like to have his pipes, i'm sure he would have given them to me.

Got sent some of this a couple of years ago from a friend in the states, it was nice, but a lot different to the over the counter blends we get in England, one thing that did get me thinking is how in all that's holy is it possible to only have the pouch very loosely closed, forget about it for over a year and a half, find it and then be utterly amazed at the fact it still has the same amount of moisture???? Either way nice smoke for when I wanted a smoke, and just get on with things

( I guess it helps that I agreed with everything you mentioned in your "personal opinion" parts.) I agree with you on the "tobacco snobbery" elements within the pipe community. The so-called "drug store tobaccos" aren't all that bad for the money, especially when one doesn't have the money to literally burn. I'd throw in Medico pipes along with the time honored brands you mentioned, as well as Briggs tobacco (my grandfather smoked that). You've given me that little nudge to reacquaint myself with the good old all American brands that were ubiquitous 60 and 70 years ago. Thanks!

Oddly enough I've never had Carter Hall. I started with Prince Albert and got a bit tired of burley and have been exploring VA's and Latakia/orientals. I'm definitely going to return to burley someday.

I've got some CH coming tomorrow and also some Lane 1Q, along with a new churchwarden. I've been a casual smoker for years and always smoked store jarred black cavendish. My pipe collection has grown and now I'm trying to venture out and find some different flavors. I tried some SG virginia flake; it was good but I guess I'm still searching for something that wows me, plus the flake isn't as convenient as other cuts. I do like the tobacco flavor but I think I'm an aromatic smoker at heart. Everyone is different and by reading reviews some may say a certain tobacco is the best and others say it tastes like ash. I've got to find a local shop where I could sample tobaccos. Thanks for your review!!

I can relate to your sentiments. I smoke Carter Hall (or SWR or Granger) in a Brigham or in a cob. The experience is definitely old-school smoking at its most nostalgic.

For a moment there, between fall 2020 till spring of 2021 I had feared we may lose the presence of Prince Albert and Carter Hall as we miss your presence.. Although it is made elsewhere now, They are still just as good in flavor. American Icons seem to be fading for Global takeovers.. The longer I live, the more I miss.. RIP

CH produces tons of smoke and forms an excellent cake. Also a good blending tobacco as it absorbs what you mix it with rather than overpowering what you mix it with. If you have a real favorite that you want to last longer, mix in a little CH. Although I love it by itself. Can smoke all day with no bite.

Thanks, for the review of Carter Hall. I have been a regular pipe smoker almost a year and found Carter Hall early. While I do try and like other tobaccos I always have a tub of Carter Hall. I do like smoking it in one of my Dr Grabow's or a cob. There is something about it that always brings me back. I like that you mentioned about feeling a little funny online when smoking Carter Hall. I think sometimes people overlook some of the OTC offerings because they are cheap. I think if you like Burley you are missing out to dismiss some of these just because they inexpensive.

Another great video, and a very good tobacco. I probably smoke more CH than any other blend.

Love the Carter Hall. I do pick up the cocoa and chocolate notes and my palate isn't as refined as some. I taste more chocolate in Sir Walter Raleigh, but they are pretty similar to me. Love the drugstore blends, no need for any "embarrassment". There is a reason they are so popular. Good, easy smoke, easy to find, and pretty good price. Thanks for the info John. Take care, Stephen

I kept finding myself going to Rite Aid to pick up a pouch of CH. Finally decided to buy a tub to save some coin. Glad I did as it's almost gone. I smoke burleys,aeros,and English blends,but seem to need a CH fix ever so often. Look forward to your review of Lanes RR. Also picked up a couple of ounces Match Edgeworth to compare. Match is cube cut like the original Edgeworth that I use to smoke many years ago. Both are quite interesting but certainly different. Hope you can review the Match Edgeworth sometime.

I had a great Uncle that smoked Carter Hall in his big old bull dog pipe. I was very young and that pipe seemed so huge to me then. He also smoked a cherry flavored tobacco that made their house smell so good.

Hey matches, i LOVE my pipes and love the whole act of loading a bowl of delicious aromatic smelling tobacco, and the relaxation/daydream effect that smoking a tobacco pipe brings me, BUT, i gotta say, im getting frustrated because of 2 things, The first is i feel like my tobacco used to taste good consistently and i get the hints of whatever flavors were put into it. (NOT ALL AROMATICS, I ONLY HAVE A HANDFUL I CAN TASTE THE FLAVORS), but lately it seems like i dont taste anything besides hot smoke! Im aware this COULD be because the tobacco is getting a little older maybe. The other thing, and this is my main frustration, i feel like when i watch you smoke, you seem to soo relaxingly take these little micro puffs (and big puffs too), but you produce alot of smoke! For me, if i want to produce a smoke, i have to get my pipe real hot so it cherries hard enough to produce that smoke. And THEN, if im not smoking it hot to get that good smoke cloud, i get barley ANNNY smoke clouds at all. My question i guess is, is it because im smoking out of cheaper pipes? is it the way i pack it? should i invest in one of the better made pipes like a peterson, or savanelli like you use? but then again, you’re using a grabow in this vid and you’re gettin the good clouds on the little puffs. Ive tried chopping the tobacco up into little bits instead of strands and that does help gove me a more consistent burn, but i still dont get those good clouds like you. Can you do a video on how you load your pipes and give tips you have if any on how to get consistent, NOT HOT smoke ? if you can that would be major! thanks

I quit pipes many years ago and came back to them 4 years ago. I have been smoking Trout Stream for most of the 4 years and needed a change. I am not sure why I tried Carter Hall since it is not a aromatic. I am glad I did. It is very mild and no bite. It is very basic and so far I am very happy I tried it. Now I want to try other otc brands. If there was a complaint it might be too mild but time will tell. Right now I am going to enjoy CH.

Just curious Matches, how long have you been smoking? I am very intrigued by pipes. A nod to the past, and setting time aside to solve the world’s problems. I can’t imagine I would smoke more than a bowl per day, probably 2-3 times a week more realistically. I am concerned about the health issues... I will have to overcome that. I have watched a number of KZfaq videos, but any advice you could provide in getting started or any other words of wisdom would be appreciated! Carter Hall seems like it would be a good tobacco to start with. I have never really smoked tobacco, so want to stay with lower nicotine options, as I have no nicotine addiction or dependency. I really enjoy your reviews- Very enlightening and you make it look so tranquil and relaxing.

My first bowel of the day, every day, since the late sixties has been Carter Hall. It goes wonderfully with that first cup of coffee. Later on I'll smoke something else but that's how I start the day.

I get a chocolate milkshake or a chocolate malt. The coco is there, but there's also a "milk" component as well.

Thanks for the reminder, John. CH has a fantastic room note if you've ever been around someone else smoking it. A question about Haunted Bookshop: can you smoke back-to-back bowls of it, day after day? It might actually be a bit too strong to do that with, but does the flavour wear well over time? The only tobacco I can do that with is Mac Baren Mixture. When I'm busy, I'll just load the humidor (from the 5 lb bulk bag) and saw through it. Sometimes for months. Cheers and Mellow Puffs, Mark

Prince Albert also contains cavendish. I haven't ever had Edgeworth. They just recently brought it back. The name is different though. I think it's called Lane Limited ready rubbed. I like the way the old tins looked.

Have to say I always chuckle at the phrase "American as apple pie", which is funny because apples originate in Kazakhstan and the earliest recipe for pie dates back to England in 1381; a long time before the US was "discovered"... :D. I really like this tobacco. Shame I can't get it in the UK readily. It smokes very well in a cob.

I like smoking OTCs in a Meerschaum. You really get a clean flavor from it and it kind of knocks out a little of the chemical taste you get if you puff on them a bit too hard. Did you ever get to smoke the old London Dock or Kentucky Club? There are some new versions of them I'm thinking about trying out this Summer.

Smoke what you like! I usally smoke amphora original blend , captain black royal, erinmore mixture, right now im smoking smokers pride vanilla Cavendish that my father picked up for me on his trip to north Dakota. Eventually I would like to order tobacco online because the prices are crazy here in Canada.

I have to travel across the state line into NC to get Carter Hall and other decent OTC blends. Sadly, it's getting really hard to find them now.
