I’ve always counted “Almost Like A Song” as one of the top 10 best written, best performed songs of ALL time. You can’t help but feel the sincerity & pain in every word. The sheer depth of the concept that “it’s almost like a song, but it’s much too sad to write” sends chills up my spine to this day. Lyrics like that are so rare- finding a new way to express an emotion that almost everyone has felt. That always amazes me when it happens. Now add the fact that RM could make you believe it with every performance- that’s the rare convergence that makes me a music fan! It doesn’t happen often, but I live for moments like that...

"Smokey Mountain Rain" was a sort of intentionally similar hit song to the years earlier Elvis Presley song "Kentucky Rain". Which featured a younger pre-fame Ronnie Millsap playing the piano for Elvis on this famous hit. Another similar subject song, although in a different style, was "That's How I Got To Memphis", by Tom T. Hall.

My mother loved Ronnie Milsap. She waited on him many times when I was younger. He would drive through our little town of Somerset, Kentucky while on tour. He always requested "Thelma" as his server. When my mother passed in 2018, I received all her autographed pictures of Ronnie. It warms my heart to know that my mother made such an impact on Ronnie as he did on us with his music.

Got to see Ronnie Milsap in concert in the early 80's as a young teenager. Scared me to death when he jumped up on top of his piano and started dancing. I was like omg!!! He's blind don't let him break his neck....lol He was an opening act for Kenny Rogers that night. Awesome show. Proud to call Ronnie Milsap a fellow North Carolinian from Black Mountain, North Carolina.

Ronnie is so underated. He was born blind and abandoned by his mother , raised by his grandparents before he ended up at a school for the blind. If I remember correctly he could see a little out of one eye and a student or teacher hit him and he lost all of his vision.. But he's a great piano player and singer. 40 #1 hits says it all. Thanks for the review I m glad to see great artist from so long ago still get attention and recognition that's well deserved

Almost Like A Song came out in 1977 . It was a big country hit . It was nominated for two Grammy awards . Ronnie is a genius and his autobiography was named , “It Was Almost Like A Song”. I highly recommend the book . It tells the true story of Ronnie’s upbringing in a blind school where he was experienced some abuse from his teacher . It sheds light on the legends personal life. Very moving book . I have met Ronnie twice in Texas . He’s a big sweetheart. Well known fact that most don’t know about the legend. He played piano for two of Elvis’s hit songs .”iIn The Ghetto”, and “Kentucky Rain.”.

This song just broke my heart. This was my brother's favorite song. He passed away at the age of 42. He was homeless and did not tell anyone. He went down to a river in the mountains, parked his truck and went to sleep. The police found him dead the next morning. Said he had a massive heart attack from freezing to death. This was really sad. He was a very depressed person and kept to himself.

Ronnie Milsap is so great. My Daddy passed away in 2005 at the age of 47. When I was maybe 10 or 11, our family vacationed in the Smoky Mountains and he played Ronnie Milsap, The Statler Brothers and The Carpenters during our road trip. This was great to see. I had my Daddy back for a few minutes. Thanks. Maybe one day you can check out The Statler Brothers. They are a group I hold close to my heart. It would be hard for me to suggest a song though. Ronnie Milsap has been my favorite singer since I was 4 years old in 1974. He has 40 number 1 hits, which for a long time, was a record for individual honors, I believe Conway Twitty has more number 1 hits but many of them were duets. Ronnie is a Legend ...like the song says! ;) My favorite album was Inside Ronnie Milsap .. I bought that cassette 3 times since I played it so much it, it wouldn't play properly after a while...I now have the entire song list on my ipone. My favorite song is a toss up between It's just a room and In no time at all...but there are hundreds of others that come right after...Smokey Mountain Rain was probably his biggest hit.

He came to Billy Bob's 3 years ago, he was sick that night and had to be helped off the stage, he couldn't do the encore, we didn't get to hear this song. Even though he was sick, he put on a great performance. So glad i got to see him. ❤🎹 He told a story about meeting Ray Charles when he was 13, he'd heard about Ronnie's playing the piano, he said " Boy you're going to go far" such a great story.

This brought back a good memory for me. When this song came out, I was around 11 years old. My Mom loved it (it was constantly playing on the radio). I got home from school one day, and she had bought the sheet music and was waiting for me to play it for her on the piano. I was the only person who knew how to play the piano in our family, having been taking lessons since I was six. Mama was diagnosed with ovarian cancer the next year, and passed away when I was 15. So, thank you for bringing back a sweet memory for me from a song that I had all but forgotten. ❤

One of my all time favorite songs. It is just heart wrenching. No matter how good anyone's life has gone, every person on the planet has that one special person that they have loved and things didn't end up going the distance. You still love them and wish them well in whatever direction their life took them, but even if your own life went well, the one that you loved and lost will hold that special place in your heart until the day you die. All I have to do is close my eyes in a quiet place and I can hear her and feel her inside me like it was yesterday. No matter where I go or what I do, she will own my heart and soul until the day I die.

I had one of his songs played at mine and my husband's wedding. What a difference you made in my life. A very true song for us. Standing there looking at each other while that song played seemed like forever standing in front of so many people. I just kept looking at him and thinking all kinds of happy thoughts. Saying things in my mind to him. Ronnie Milsaps has some great songs. I love the one you played. He's going to be in Memphis I think during Elvis week or sometime doing a show I think Elvis related. Whatever he does will be fantastic.

Love it when the singer, and Ronny Milsap is one of the best, hits that high note right in the middle and you break out in that big grin!

Great song! I related to it as a man met a woman, who only comes along once in your life. They both were in love, madly from January thru December. Then the burning flame became a small ember. I thought it meant they broke up, and he's sitting there remenising about her, and how he misses her. Sadly he recalls how much he loved her. It was almost like a song! Lord how I could relate to this song!

Ronnie Millsap has many songs that, based on what you have said you liked before, you would probably like. One, "Lost In The Fiftys Tonight", is a mid 80s tribute to the songs of the 50s. It came out when I was 18, in 1985. And was a tribute to my dad's era of music, the doo-wop era, or in this case slow dance type of music. I guess you'd call it. I loved the song, and most of those "new to me" older songs. But I never saw the 1985 video till just now. "Lost In The 50s Tonight", 1985, Ronnie Millsap kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q650Z854vp3Ykqc.html

Once in every life ... someone comes along, And you came to me ... it was almost like a song. You were in my heart ... right where you belong, And we were so in love ... it was almost like a song. January through December ... we had such a perfect year, Then the flames became a dying ember ... All at once you weren't here. Now my broken heart ... cries for you each night, And it's almost like a song ... but it's much too sad to write. You have chosen a great song to feature. Ronnie Milsap is a great musician as you have heard. He has a great voice. I love this arrangement: Go back through it again and listen to the guitar fills, then listen to the background singers. This recording is a masterpiece! Thanks MRM: I like your content!

I'm glad you did a song. Your song reviews are the reason I started watching you. I loved watching you discover Elvis. But sadly, I rarely watch the other videos. If that's where your heart leads you then that's ok, but I would really like to see more songs again. I think you would like the live version of "Lady" or "Ruby" by Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers. Many people don't realize they are good friends and they have a lot of fun on stage together.
