Some important background (in my opinion): My older sister and I have had a non-existent relationship since our Mom died in Dec 2019. At the time of my mom’s death, my family found out that my sister had convinced my mom to drain my parents' savings accounts and my dad had $611 to his name. My sister has three children and was going through a horrible divorce and couldn't get the courts to make her ex pay child support, so I understand she was desperate, but my parents are retired people who were living off savings.
Since then (so one year and three months), she has said less than 100 words to me, all via text. After our mom died, it took me a couple of months to stop being angry with her for what she did, but I tried calling every week or so through 2020 and sent a lot of text messages, all of which went unanswered. No thank yous for birthday and holiday gifts to her or her children. When I had a brush with cancer last year, she didn’t even bother to call me or text me after I had surgery. I didn’t even know her divorce was final or that she got a live-in boyfriend (I had to find out from other people).
Story 1:
AITA for not giving my sister my credit or money?
Story 2:
AITA for refusing to hire my sister (26F) as my (34F) Realtor?
Story 3:
AITA for moving out in the middle of one of my parents' big projects and not helping them?
Story 4:
AITA for not making my stepson a beneficiary to my life insurance?

It's understandably why friends would think that. The sister told them her twisted version of events, and the OP never corrected them. If the OP would just contact them and say, "My sister drained my parents entire savings account, and has ignored my every attempt to stay connected over the past few years," a lot of those friends would probably change their tune and support the OP.

Because their self-righteous pricks who "want to help" but they "don't want to put themselves at risk!" (I do believe her FRIENDS know the sister is a risk! But their "thinking of the kids!" Hence the shaming her with her "Single life style!" Hell I'm guessing their in relationships or have families from how they talk to OP as otherwise that one friend who called her selfish for her single life style and "jealous" is a hypocrite if their single too! But I don't think anyone who is that would shame someone for it! So likely those "FRIENDS" that one specifically are married and have families! Since it's those types who shame Single people and accuse them of "being jealous" that's why they won't help "those with families out!" Despite the fact they can do with what they earned as they please! It's just them PROJECTING their own anger at how swell things are for the Single Person who has no "Responsibilities" like they do and well, bitter people are bitter and have to tell themselves you the single person are secretly jealous of them "doing what's expected and having a family" so they can push off their own pathetic jealousy that you didn't do the same and appear happy! I'm sure if she did try to help her sister and got screwed they'll use their own families and "well you should have known better" to get out of helping her when she most defiantly would have helped them in the past, or very likely did!). Never tolerate selfish people like this! Shaming language like this without ever hearing her side of things just shows how selfish they are! Hell it's akin to some stories where the person complains that the victim should just give in because they'll "look bad" if the victim doesn't give them what they want since they "promised others they'd get it!"...…fuck those people, don't make promises on things that aren't yours! Even if you think you can get them! That's now all on YOU! (A lesson my mom, aunts and uncles taught me! Hell even my DAD who can be a dick at times taught me to NEVER do this! Frankly if he never crosses lines like this, then assholes have no excuse! I love my dad, but I know he's not the greatest of persons! And he is always my indication of "There exist WORSER people" as all of those types without fail do things that even my dad would never do or cross on his WORSE days! To give you a clue, my dad lies ALOT, he can be deceptive, and he's a serial Cheater who can never devote himself to a relationship! Frankly I'm like a GOOD counterpart as I know I'm not someone worth getting into a relationship with beyond "Friends" hence I'm a forever bachelor/virgin! And that's largely cause I watched my dad from the times I visited him growing up destroy good relationships with women because he was scared of commitment! It's why he and my mother split when I was 1 years old when she TRIED to make it work! I only bring up the Serial Cheating as he didn't visibly do it till I was 18! And with a GF I thought was good for him when I met and knew her since 14! Frankly I was happy she dumped his ass before ever finding out and married a doctor elsewhere! She was better off, especially with the cheating! What makes him good is he never abused me, and while crummy, did take his job as a father seriously when I was around! The only redeemable thing my mother is willing to say nice things about him is he doesn't screw family, nor did me rotten as most deadbeats would have, though he could and SHOULD have done better!). The funny part is I did have "Friends" like these's assholes and never realized how bad the toxicity was till I was separated from them by fate in my 20's! Then the freedom was so grand, I NEVER tolerated that shitshow again! I will NEVER put that poison collar back on my neck again and have cut off anyone who attempted to try this because the one good thing about me is! I remember the Red Flags I previously chose to ignore in bad people in my teens! So I can see them no matter how hard many people TRY to hide them! Once I see them, I go into caution mode, and well, if I keep seeing them, I'm fucking GONE like a Ghost as I realize "I don't have to put up with this shit!

That 3rd story is incredibly sad, as a parent you *CANNOT* rely on your child to support you, I refuse to be a financial burden to my family, they should have planned better plus they can easily rent out the home/room for money and could budget to save some extra money. No need to control and burdern your child.

With the third-story go complete no contact with your parents and anyone that enables their behavior. This is in my opinion downright child abuse and endangerment to force you into basically remodeling their whole house and painting your whole house and if you dare they will cut off ties what the hell did they expect. Be prepared for them to call you Non-Stop and even make physical threats to know where you live. And if they do come to your house tell them you'll call the police on child abuse charges for what they put you through

Story1: The self-righteous types! Best to tell them to fuck off, even if they were lied to by the sister, they should have at least gotten her side of things! But I'm guessing the sister made sure to put her kids in the center of it that they felt it was "for the kids" since OP is single and childless! Not caring at all they're asking her to risk herself like that! (And what GOOD friends they'll be if OP ends up in a situation because of their encouragement if she did as they strong armed her into doing! The one that called her SELFISH obviously will call her SELFISH for letting herself get scammed as well! These's are not friends! Dump em! As a good Comedian once said, "Better to be alone, then to be with people who make you feel alone!" they aren't acting as friends in any form, so they don't get to dictate or judge ANYONE! I wish theses types would "mind their own business!" they almost never do so, but I'm guessing as I said before, it's because assholes like the Sister utilize "pity tactics" like using their kids to get morons to take her side without thinking!) Me I had such "friends" in my teens, but in my 20's once I was cut off from them, I realized they were NEVER my friends, and since enjoying my 20's and now 30's without such parasites, I'm not so keen on tolerating them or even WANTING them back in my life (if any I DO connect with turn out to be so! I have no problem "cutting them out!" I won't do it on sight, but I will keep them at arms length and cut em out the moment it's clear they "were never my friends!" I will never let them or anyone "pity/shame me" into doing something I don't want to do! They do it!

I had a good friend one time, when I was young, try to convince me to co-sign for his home. Explained that they would keep making payments and my credit would be great by the time they finished paying off the house. I would have done it too since I was young, gullible, and naive if I actually didn't have a family member tell me about not sharing my credit with anyone when I was growing up, kinda burned into me. I noticed after that incident our friendship just died off, sucks cause I considered him a good bud, not sure if he was upset that I declined his offer but I would've never put my friends in the position that he put me in, regardless I am happy with my decision. My advice to people is, it's not your responsibility to co-sign for anybody, if they NEED a co-signer then they already can't afford whatever it is they are applying for and it's also a red flag. 🚩

I was in a similat situation when I purchased my first vehicle from a dealership. Friend came with me to make sure things went smoothly and offer advise/second opinion. When it came to the credit check, I didn't have great credit, which would have raised my car loan. Keep in mind, I could have paid cash but wanted the loan to help build my credit. Well, my friend said fuck it and co-signed without much prompting. He knew I had the money and the situation anyway. In the end, my loan payments helped raised his credit score and mine. That was like 2 years ago. Still consider him a good friend and regularly contact him despite living on opposite ends of the country now. Still own the car too (paid off). I think you made the right decision in your scenario. A home is a long term investment with a large loan attached. I wouldn't ask anyone who isn't going to live there to co-sign that.

Last year for 10 weeks I averaged over 100 hours per week helping get areas back up and running. The rest of the time it was closer to 70-80 hrs per week. The people affected are extremely grateful but back home I'm accused of taking advantage of people. I DO NOT over charge and I am paid through the insurance. My money is made from the crazy hours worked. I understand that alot of low lifes pray on people during these times and I do my best to stop them and report them. I think when it comes to the Second Story the original poster wants to work exclusively with Tina when it comes to her flips on her properties. However I also get the feeling that when it comes to purchasing a house for herself she will do it exclusively with her sister. I also think that the sister is pretty much a bit inexperienced when it comes to the Realty game. Also her rejecting Tina's offer to Mentor her it tells you that Penny has a lot of pride in believing herself and taking that offer with almost to some degree and her mind swallowing her Pride even though she's basically getting advice and grow from a person who has more experience. Maybe the sister needs to go to counseling to see why she's like this. But other than that you're not in the wrong and you need to tell your dad to butt out

In the last story OP's husband should check with ex-wife to see if she has life insurance that names their son the beneficiary of. If so then OP should name her daughter sole heir to the insurance. Otherwise step-son could potentially receive money from mom (all), dad (half), and step-mom (half) while OP'S daughter get half of mom's and half of dad's. Since some of the comments below say to be fair give equal amounts, does that mean step-son's bio mom needs to name OP's daughter as beneficiary with her life insurance as well, you know in the name of keeping things equal?

Before I say what I am about to say: I am a Christian, so I am aware of the context of the story which I am making parallels with. Sometimes, I think people take the "prodigal son" parable in the Book of Luke way too literally, and expecting to be welcomed back after burning bridges and finances. The thing about most interpretations was that the prodigal son was humbled before he came back to his father, and confessed his wrongdoings before the father welcomed him back with a feast. Most entitled children either skips the "humbling and confession" part, or pretends to be humbled so they can return back in and repeat the cycle once more. Unless there is a way to test out sincerity, I fear future generations will continue to see this parable (which I have to add, is actually pretty profound and has multiple interpretations, not just the most famous one) as a pretext to do as they please and expect to be welcomed back once they blew their finances.

My parents did that a lot when I was growing up, (my dad was military so we moved every couple years) they would buy foreclosures or soon to be foreclosed homes we'd live in the house while we fixed them(some of them needed lots of experienced work) then when my dad got restationed we'd sell the now fixed property.

Story 1: NTA, She already stole thousands from your mom and Dad, why would you be obligated to give her more? Story 2: NTA, Realtor with 25plus years of experience vs Realtor with no experience..... that's a simple business decision. The fact that she (father after update) expected you to use her without previous discussion says a lot. Story 3: NTA, your mom sounds like a peach (a really rotten one). Story 4: NTA, you need to be sure your child is protected in the event of your death.

1st story: NTA. DO NOT SIGN, NADA, NOTHING. Tell those friends your side of the story, and cut those "friends" who still think the sister is sister out of your life, she stole your parents, and only contacts you when SHE needs something. Still, do not help her. Don't give her a dime. And cut contact with that Beach. 2nd story: NTA. No, just because someone is "FaMiLy" doesn't mean they automatically get a job in your business. Business do not care about family. Daddy sounds like he choose Penny as the favorite kid. 3rd story: NTA. You are not her son, you are her slave. They are abusive as hell, GTFO and cut contact with those POS. If I were you, I wouldn't had said a word tho, and just leave, leaving a note saying why, but no info on how to contact. Also, she doesn't have a ground to sue. You didnt sign a lease nor anything. 4th story: YTA. I would had understand if the kid was an adult, but no, YTA. "I love both so much", but somehow the relationship with the in-laws affects.. How?.

About the life insurance, just because you have family doesn't mean they will look after you. It would be better to split it 50/50, especially since she raised him/knew him since he was a baby.

In the last one I’m not saying her spouse would, but ppl change when money is involved. I would make her the sole beneficiary of her policy. If it is left up to him he can easily split it between the kids or give it all to the step child. Never say never. Death and money can bring out the worst in people

Penny and your dad should have never assumed that you would work with her. There’s a reason why there’s a saying about never going into business with family... Hard labor story. Wtf, if your parents are old and need you to pay rent then why are they renovating a closet? It would make more sense to not take on an unnecessary home improvement project.

Realtor story, Glad I waited for the up date. For a man who obviously does well in the stock market the father seems a bit strange in assuming that one sister would automatically employ another and cut out a valuable business connection. I am looking for a financial advisor so I think I will employ my 22 year old brother who just graduated from community college and stop consulting Warren Buffet, yes that sounds like a smart idea! Both sisters have the right to be annoyed with the father and good that Penny is taking the mentorship, also good OP gave Tina an out regarding Penny. NTA.

Story to you say already have somebody. And if they pressure you say look she is very in experience and nepotism isn’t a reason for me to lose money. You need to tell both dad and Penny that she’s acting like an entitled brat. And if they keep bothering you then just go low contact.Do you know I love the way people play the family card. You’re not supposed to sacrifice your income for family know that’s not how it works. And the fact that pennies refusing to let this woman meant to her shows you just how immature she is. Stay with Tina is the family gives you a hard time go no contact or low contact. Tell your dad you think it she’s such a great realtor have her start buying homes for you.

With the last story I get the feeling that the original poster said her stepson has a large support system which means he has a large mental and emotional support system but does he have a large economical social support system. What I mean is if something happens to the original poster and her husband will the stepson be financially alright. My advice is simple just leave your daughter 80% of your life insurance and then the remaining 20% goes directly to your son depending on the size of it so if you have a $500,000 life insurance policy leave her 400,000 in him 100,000 that way they both can be financially secure because I get the feeling that once you make her the sole beneficiary now there's almost a sense that you will never revisit that I get the sense. But other than that you're not in the wrong

Keep your family out of your flipping business. Entitlement runs deep. The Notorious B.I.G. once said your business and family completely separated. If the younger sister believes that she us above mentoring by a successful realtor, then she has exposed the depths of her ignorance and arrogance that will cost you deals, not just money.
