Many painting students make the mistake of choosing a subject that is much too difficult. When learning how to paint one must learn to choose simple subjects. When skills improve, one can move to more difficult subjects.

You just went with the flow rather than replicating. A basic trait of a great Artist...!

I love your short tutorials. They're like a snippet into your mind... much more organized than mine... I might add. I'm running through your numbered tutorials and I'm at about 18. I've been painting off an on for ages but I'm self taught, so I'm constantly trying to reinvent the wheel. I've learned so much about watercolors in a few hours my mind is going to burst open... in a HAPPY WAY. I am ABSOFREAKINGTHRILLED to have stumbled onto your site. I'm ready to throw my acrylics into the street and play with watercolors only. I was about to do the exact opposite, but NOW I UNDERSTAND THE PROBLEMS OF GETTING THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF WATER ON THE BRUSH... and more and more and more and so much more. Thank you dear sensei. I can't wait to get to a blank piece of paper!

Hi Tina, so happy to hear my lessons are helpful. Everyone can learn to paint in watercolor, or any medium, very well...if they follow my instruction. No need to switch to watercolor if you prefer acrylics: In all mediums: choose a subject that isn't too difficult. Draw it very accurately...trace or project if you have to. Get the values correct...don't worry about the color...use colors you enjoy but get the values correct. If you do this, your painting should look very much like your photo, I wish you well!

Hello Stan, thanks for the valuable lesson. What kind of paper did you use? Do I need to wet the paper and tape it onto a wooden board? I want to paint the portrait you showed. Is is available ? Do you students trace the portrait before they start painting or do they fill in the face while painting ?

it's interesting here that you use tape, but (if i'm understanding right) you don't actually tape it to anything, the tape is just to get the edges/border? i never thought to do that, i always just use the tape to tape the paper to a board. it's an interesting idea. but i think the tape i use is not the best, because whenever i untape it, often there's some color that leaked under it, so it's not a pure white edge. i'm using blue '3M' tape. perhaps there is something else i could try, if you have any suggestions?

One must use your finger nail, or a hard object, to press the tape down so that the paint doesn't leak under the tape. I use masking tape which one can buy at a store that sells house paint.

I love your lessons. But how many times have you painted that group of subject matter?
@Stanleylestermiller5 жыл бұрын
Some subjects, never previously painted, some of them one other time, one subject, a number of times.

Stan, it seems you have already published this clip. The more I looked at it the more I remembered every single example... After checking my list, I found that the duplicate is Lesson 4 (choosing a simple subject). Does this duplication serve any purpose or is it a case of mistaken identity? Thanks for all the lessons you have published so far, I find them truly helpful, very focused and to the point.

mhrobe Hello Mhrobe. Thank you for noticing the similarity between lesson 4 and lesson 22. Yes, they are covering the same subject, choosing a paintable subject, but in lesson 4 I do not do any demonstrating. Also, one of the biggest mistakes students make is to choose a subject that is too difficult. I do not feel that it is a mistake to repeat a lesson, a message as I have done Mhrobe. I am sorry it seems to have bothered you.

No, no, please don't be sorry, I was happy to see the material again, you have such a knack for demonstrating your subject while being cool and casual but very precise and committed. I view your clips more than once, twice or thrice: I find they are inspiring and encouraging to me.
