Worked at *unnamed office supply company* for 5 years from 2012 to 2017. Yes, the registers were trash, and it took a long time to get new ones. Then, when I worked for the *competitor* in 2018, there's were even worse somehow.... They just don't care about the employees being able to do their job correctly. But make sure you're meeting your metrics and sales goals guys! GO TEAM!

I used to work for Staples and the alarm for the cameras there would go off if you looked at the cameras the wrong way. One time when I got there first thing in the morning, it was going off. It wasn't going off when the store closed the night before, just randomly started going off when no one was even in the store to touch any of the cameras.

I worked for Lowe’s for three years. It was a miserable place as anyone reading recent news over the past year, and I finally quit early this year. I will say that the newer-looking computer monitors and the online order system (completely separate from the main system) is horribly outdated. The computer system, Genesis, made for the cash registers, is dated back to the 1980s and you can tell just looking at the Pong-looking display, it made me as a cashier just want to throw myself off a bridge, and they regularly detach from the card readers. Every single update was absolute hell that the system couldn’t comprehend. About a month after I quit there was a nationwide (maybe even as far as Canadian stores) outage of the system that led to absolute panic with the employees and forced so much of the manual work that simply isn’t safe in today’s digital currency world. I remember even glancing at register screens at places like Kroger, it put how outdated we were in perspective.

So when I worked at Hot Topic, we had the WORST pos situation. Like we had to run ppls cards through the keyboard (it had a card reader) and if it couldnt read it, we couldnt take the card AT ALL and that always is bad when you cant do sales. Also, whenever we had to do a gift card and the person was paying with cash, it would take like 20 mins to do it bc the system ran so slow. They updated my store after i left thankfully.

AS400s what most older PoS software run on was manufactured until 2012 and new stock ran out in 2014. It is a multiple generation system. The software was written often in Cobol language. In 2018 it was rare to see a experienced programmer. They would start at around 160K a year during that time. A lead programmer would make over 200K a year.

The furthering of technology has only ever made sense in conjunction with video games and other nonessential activities. There's currently too many cracks (bugs, glitches, hacking, etc.) in the systems of electronics for anyone with common sense to use them for anything essential if it can be helped.

Wal-mart/Sam’s Club crap was still broken when I left back in late August, 2019. Even “new” pieces of equipment, that we were suppose to use daily, was broken as hell to the point were I, and my co-workers, wanted to smash the handhelds with a sledgehammer. Hell, even our “new” self-checkout machine were utter trash. Ironically, one of the forklift drivers hit one of the machines at night. I think it was out for about a month or two before they fixed. I’ve been thinking of writing a novel on my experiences of working for that company.

With the company I work for our receipt printers are so scuffed. Sometimes when we even just change the paper rolls out it'll stop working and it can take anywhere from 5-30 minutes fussing with them to get them functional again. If one ever goes down and needs replaced it takes 1-5 months to replace it because ERC often just 'forgets' to send a replacement out. And if a certain amount of time goes by and even if we call to remind them with the order number provided about the issue they'll usually still require us to redo their entire troubleshooting checklist before trying to get a new one sent out. Which when we're a store often only staffed with 2 people at a time and it's difficult to even get the time between customers and other store needed duties done (as these calls can average out to be an hour long), it's a hassle that doesn't need to be there in the first place. Oh and our store also does digital coupons. Which 1 in 4 times when customers input their information to have them apply it can cause the register to do a hard reset. So we're stuck standing there for a good 5 minutes waiting for it to boot back up, which is just /great/ when there's a huge line of people. Our office computer has reached the point that just signing into it causes a system freeze that can last 2-5 minutes so you often just have to let it sit there and unfreeze. But if you get held up for too long with something else (say you have to rush out to help the line or so on) then you'll get logged off and often have to redo the process all over again. And this may be more of an aside but it was also /soooo/ lovely when our heating unit went down last winter and our company wouldn't give the go ahead for the mechanic to order needed parts because they weren't sure they were okay with the costs. So our entire store had to deal with 2 months of winter without heat. We're in the northeaster part of the US so it often gets cold but of course this winter was one cursed with multiple polar zone freezes during that year's winter. Tried to bug and bug our district manager about it to no leeway, tried putting tickets in and they'd be dismissed or erased by the end of the day. Wasn't until customers who were fed up trying to shop in freezing conditions actually phoned into the Better Business Bureau that the unit finally got fixed. But not before our DM completely reamed our asses for 'letting customers get so displeased that complaints had to go that far', cause that was totally in our control.

The computers we use in Walmart aren't necessarily old. The program that they're running and the way that they are maintained are the main problems. Some of the computers are required to remain on at all times, can never be defragged, have logging systems that bloat the whole thing and are running the S.M.A.R.T. system. The S.M.A.R.T. system was created 2 years after the first commercially available computers were made. Most of the ones that aren't hooked up to photo, pickup, or a time clock are actually reasonably designed. If you have to reset the paint computer it takes like 2 minutes because I'd doesn't have any of that crap on it it's just a normal windows 10 computer that has the paint mixer software on it.

At the paint store I work at, our computers use the DOS operating system. At first it's a drag to use but over time I got used to it. However it's not very user friendly; you navigate with the arrow keys, ENTER is your left mouse button, F1 = Accept (basically ENTER but on steroids), F3 = Look up, F5 = BACK button, F6 = Add a color, F12 = Method of payment. Sometimes when a customer gives me their phone number in order to look up their account, I gotta be like "gimme one sec, gimme one sec" because the way to get to the phone number is entry is awkward as hell. To make matters worse, you gotta memorize these codes for every paint like DS36V00263; each code is unique to for every paint's brand, finish, and base. I've memorized like 60% of the paint codes, but that's only the main brands that most painters and home owner customers get on a daily basis. I stopped bothering to memorize the industrial paints because those codes are a nightmare to memorize. When it comes to our 30% and 50% off sales, sometimes our customers will freak out and assume we didn't give them the sale price. Why? Because our receipts print it in such an awkward fashion. For example, if one of our paints is $42.67 and there's a 30% off sale, instead of saying $29.87 on the receipt, it'll just say $42.67 - $12.80. So then you gotta explain to them that $42.67 is the regular price and that $12.80 is what you're saving. So fucking stupid. Now let's get to the fun part, Matches. Matches is a process where we scan an object's color and it tells the computer what color to make. Kinda like the turkey baster tool in MS paint where you scan a pixel and you get that right color. The only difference is that it's a pain in the ass. First off, the computer doesn't show you what color it is, I mean it's DOS for crying out loud. All it will show you is the color formula, so you have to guess that it's the right color. In order to get a GOOD match, you need to bring in a FLAT object that's bigger than a quarter. I get idiots all the time that bring in curved object or objects the size of a dime and they expect a good touch up (touch up means that you're trying paint only certain areas of the wall, trim, etc). Another thing that pisses me off is when a customer wants a match in the CHEAPEST paint brand. That's a no no because cheap paint when matched will turn out darker than the original piece that's brought in. I do my best to refuse to do matches in cheap paint but half the time, they come from painters (who make 90% of our prophet). Home owners don't care what brand I do the match under because it's not like they come in on a daily basis. Any mid-grade or premium paints will have a 100% guarantee GOOD match. Bottom line, if you're gonna buy paint at the paint store, be AWARE that our operating system sucks and if you're gonna come in with a match, please PLEASE make sure the object is BIGGER than a quarter, flat NOT curved. And if you're trying to match drywall, then cut out a piece from behind a TV, picture frame, or sofa so that you can worry about patching the wall later. And if you're matching trim, make sure the trim is FLAT. You have been advised

If I remember correctly, most of the Walmart computer hardware was bought by the stores, not by corporate. Any new or replacement hardware would come out of the store's P&L which is how management is evaluated. Unless corporate absolutely requires something enough to send it themselves, you're keeping what you have for years and years.

It's great that old, electronic technology is used by cheapskate companies, unless it's an ATM. That way, they get hoisted by their own petards. No vengeance required by anyone! Windows XP is pretty much an expansion pack for Windows 2000 which is just terrible, and ATMs use Windows XP (It makes them so exploitable by thieves). Good Luck with getting cash from your bank account. Printers have always been garbage. Inkjet printers are basically like extortionists with payment-over-time damage to your bank account while the ones that require toner are super expensive but you can avoid the damage over time to your bank account over a much longer period of time.

Fanta my dude i love your exsposing Gamestop. Over the years when Funco Land was arround they was so professional. The sales associates was pleasantly nice, and there game libraries are organized. When it came to Gamestop it started off good. With Funco Land passed the baton to Gamestop again it started off nice.....fast forward, Gamestop got so greedy for money there new ideals to boost revenue and keep customers keep coming in. There game credit system really sucks. They encourage us to pre order or suggest buy the newly released games.....so you do it , you take the game home. After hours of playing a game maybe you want something new, have beaten the game or the game too difficult and you want to trade.....then they give you the lowest dollar credits. To see good dollars if you turn in alot of games. We talking like a bag of games or trade in more than one console.....other then that dont hold your breath on G.S. credits. Now they wanted to expand by selling these ridiculous smart phones, T-Shirts, & key chains and posters. Now they ready for another change here in 2020. I heard a rumor that Game Stop wants to bring back the Silver Elite Cards again...Its bad when you have to bring back they thing that flopped.
