Honestly, their track records are both pretty bad but for different reasons. Aside from Leia, George doesn't really have any female characters that he created that are particularly memorable in THX 1138, American Graffiti, or Star Wars. Padme had potential, but most of her best stuff is in the cartoons, comics, and books AKA not written by Lucas and her portrayal in the movies is really lacking. Remember, she fell in love with a guy over 3 days and during that time he confessed to being a mass murderer, and she was just okay with that. Meanwhile, characters like Ahsoka, Mara Jade, Assaj Ventras, and Mon Mothma were either created by other people or the influence of others massively overshadows the initial ideas George had for them. Don't get me wrong, Leia is great and I don't think George means anything bad, but his track record is hardly impressive. As for Disney, their problem is that they want their female characters to be idealized role models who have little to no internal flaws/struggles to overcome since they're already perfect the way they are and it's the world that needs to change to accept them. The problem with this approach is that this turns them all into bland, boring, flat, and painfully static characters with no arc, journey, or lessons to learn that would make them grow, regress, or change. And since Disney has no idea how to write female characters in any other way, this means they're doomed to become incredibly generic, cliche, and predictable. So yeah, on one hand, you got Princess Leia and basically nothing else, and on the other hand, you have a mob of cardboard cutouts that are mostly here to look good and check boxes rather than actually do any good.

Will the show explain why they think that then and not now? Did they have reason not to think that? How does that make them stupid? TPM is what establishes it as probable he is a sith and suggests there aren't "randos with red sabers" around. You'd need other establishing canon to suggest otherwise. The prequels are terrible, but this contradicts that, what are the prequels contradicting? This only retroactively retcons them to make them stupid there.

At this point in the story that would make more sense than anything that has happened .

I have recently become a fan of the Holiday Special. I mean it's kind of bad, but once you watch it you realise you have to treat it like a parody, like Spaceballs, and it didn't have a 180 million dollar budget, so it's kind of amazing how much more wholesome and faithful to Star Wars it is, all wierdness and musical numbers aside, it has so much heart and soul. I love it.
