I didn't actually know this would be my final day. In fact I had planned at least 1 more overnight stay somewhere in Turkey. But what unfolded was a long day of riding in stifling heat on the amazing Turkish highways. I covered more miles in a day than I have ever done before - not something I really want to do again, but it was an achievement at least!
The Journey took me all the way down the west coast of Turkey and eventually down into Didim just before the sun finally set. The cold shower was incredible.

You only 47, get on and do these things while you can. I am approaching 70 now but when I was your age I had all these plans for retirement, travelling, European trips, a new motorbike - I got to 65 and was diagnosed with leukaemia and now find travel difficult. Although you are new to You Tube, you are a very good presenter. I look forward to seeing the trip back.

That's so true, life is a short and sometimes throws curveballs. I'm so aware that it could be the same for me one day, there are no guarantees. Sorry to hear about you diagnosis and how that's affected you. Wishing you all the best my mate. Thanks for the kind complement by the way!

Loved your piece about Mental Health, i dont get out on the bike as much as i would like but its the one place i can really feel relaxed and at piece with life. Would be great to meet up sometime in the future. Im in Swindon so not far from you over in Bristol. Good luck on the return journey and ride safe mate, cheers Andy 🙂👍

Well Matt I’ve just sat and binge watched you and Thunderbirds entire journey to Turkey. I have found it both thoroughly entertaining and hugely insperational. Turkey has always been our favourite holiday destination for many a year and it has always been my motorcycle dream to one day have my “big adventure” ride to Turkey. But as always the years pass and other things in life get in the way. As I am now just beyond my mid 60’s time I realise is perhaps running out for me to hopefully achieve this dream, but having watched your excellent travelogue series that dream as been thoroughly reignited. Out will come the maps, routes are to be plotted, budgets worked out …eek (not looking forward to the budget bit) and fingers crossed 🤞 2024 could well be the year. So I would just like to take this opportunity of saying a huge thank you and I look forward to watching your return journey with “Thunderbird”. Stay safe buddy. 👍👍

Hi Dave. These are such kind words, thank you so much. Lillian and I look after my dad who is now 97, he would call you a youngster! If he could take off just over 30 years he'd probably jump on a bike tomorrow and disappear into the sunset, haha. So yes, 2024 should probably be your year for the adventure, or at least an adventure in the saddle. I will be doing some post ride videos covering some of the logistics like budget, fuel costs etc. Was surprisingly reasonable to be honest. For now though, thanks for the kind comments, it means a lot, this is all quite new to me with a channel etc. The positive feedback has been really encouraging - the biker community is a good one! Stay in touch mate.

Loved every one of your videos and also love that your concerns towards mental health are so positive. It's Saturday morning here in UK Whitby north Yorkshire ,foggy overcast bit chilly wet roads ! Just watching your last video turkey ,quick cuppa then get the old thunderbird out . If it wasn't for motorcycles great for mental health no matter what weather it is don't think I would still be here . ❤

Thanks for the comment Kelvin, yea they have an amazing effect on mental health - especially the Thunderbird eh!? What a great bike to ride. North Yorkshire will offer it's multitude of weather fronts, spent a few years in Hull, not quite as far up as you. Great part of the country.

Loved all your videos, mates and gladcit went well for you 😀 I'm 65 now and have been riding since I was 17. 99% of the time it's really relaxing, but you're right about one thing. Most of us blokes box things away out of sight, but at some point, the box will overflow 😢 stay all and enjoy 😂

Thanks so much. Yea, we are pretty much all good at bottling - if we could make a career out of it we'd all be doing very well indeed! Joking aside, our need to unwind, be present and de-stress is so essential. I'm slowly building up my "toolkit" to deal with stress and stuff in life that wears me down. Biking has been an amazing thing, both the activity of riding and the thought of it - hugely positive for me.

Brilliant videos and really enjoyed following your journey and looking forward to the return trip. I wish I was 47 again (63 now) and you have to do what you want to do as long as you can afford to do it as I have lost too many good friends in recent years, some a similar age to yourself as we never know what is around the corner in life!

Very true Alan. Life has no guarantees at all, we need to live while we are alive - sounds a bit cliche but it's so true. 63 isn't an age though, there's a Thunderbird out there with your name on it...

I am very happy to have followed this first adventure. And I will continue following if you keep finding meaning on them. Thank you for letting me be part of your adventure.

"You have reached your destination" said Mrs Google as you dismounted and streched your back while rubbing life back into those flattened buttocks! Must have been a fantastic sense of achievment looking back on what you had just accomplished. Well done Matt, I don't think I would have had the guts to do a journey of that distance so early in my "biking career" Meanwhile I have eaten the Kms, so I know the feeling of long biking hours etc; but I would never miss them for anything. The Freedom, the many smells of your surroundings, good and bad, the blindig sun in your eyes as it sets or rises, the pitch black and damp unmarked roads at night, the mysterious noises that come up from under the tank while on the motorway with no lay-by in sight, the idiot car drivers that pull out in front of you, the thrashing rain that turns up just when there is no shelter in sight etc, etc. It is all part of a biker's life, a life that I look back on, and wallow in the memories of. Well done Matt, here's to many more enjoyable munching mile trips on your life's highway. Had a word with your wife yet about biking...? it's the first step that's the hardest, after that it only get's better..., just don't push too hard, but you know that yourself. Take care, ride safe, and see ya on the return trip 👍. Steve.

Thank you Steve, much appreciated. Yes it really is an experience like no other, and it does make for some incredible memories. Those weird noises from under the tank do make you a bit uneasy at times - although riding a triple does hide some of those noises quite well! I'm taking it easy with Lillian - I might get her on the back down to the beach one day, we'll see!

A bit of deja vous lol. i was watching "Ride the bean" Norwegian guy who travels on motorbike and enjoys coffee going to Türkiye. The other day and went through the very same border crossing. I have driven a car many times in Türkiye it is a wonderful place. the dual carriageways are far better than the roads in the UK. Brilliant vlog. looking forward to the return journey. i am so jealous lol. with Mental health you have been an inspiration hence why i ride a motorbike. it gives you freedom and time to enjoy the surroundings. the smells you don't get from being in a car. you have spoken openly on your journey and the courage of riding across the continent on your own. well done

Many thanks. I will be using insta a bit more intentionally on the trip back, it doesn't get much love! really helpful with the comments about what people like from the episodes. Like I said in one of the videos, I wasn't really sure if I would even put the footage together into anything really. I've never done a youtube thing before so I've not really had a clue what people would like. So, thanks for the comment and taking the time to watch and respond, much appreciated.

Really enjoyed the whole trip Matt, perfectly done 👍 I think you should do “something” with your plans for mental health issues, here in Sweden I myself got involved with an organization called; Hjärnkoll, they do seminars and such stuff and really try to get people understanding and accepting the fact that there is a need for it, to talk about it, to try to help people to open up and get help… it surely helped me a lot. Maybe it is an idea for you to get in touch with them, as you lived in Scandinavia once, and try to work out some ideas of what might be useful to you to get to work with. Anyway, looking forward to the ride back home 😊👍

Hei Robert. Takk for kommentaren. Min Svensk er ikke helt bra lengre, det er bare Norsk som blir snakket her hjemme. Kanskje jeg burde skrive på Engelsk, tror det er nok lettere det! haha. So true, just being given the space and the understanding to open up is super important. I will look up those guys for sure, us guys need it, we really do. If there is nothing else that has come out of these travel videos it's the fact that guys need to talk, we've got stuff we're simply not dealing with. Our wives and partners do tell us all the time, but we need each other too! Stay in touch mate. Thanks!

@@thebristolthunderbird you are a 100% right, we need to get open about these issues and stop feeling bad, stop acting as if you’re not “man” enough to open up, I’ve been totally open about how my burn out has affected me and my life and it just helps to talk about it in a group, hope you find a way to get something started. And thanks for accepting me on FB too👍😊

I'm going to be doing a similar blog for my trip in April from London down to Gobekli Tepe and then across the south west of Turkey, into Greece and then as you, Brindisi and do some volcano visits etc through Italy before Mont Blanc tunnel and home. About a month away for this trip. I've not posted any vids up yet but my youtube channel is Robs Done A Runner. Really enjoying your vids Matt.
